STEMPS Faculty Publications
Translated books represent a unique bridge between cultures for young readers. This article discusses recent trends and practical applications for award-winning literature that has been translated into English and published in the United States. Winner and honour titles earning the Mildred L Batchelder Award for their publishers often include European languages of origins and settings. Despite this homogeneity, the books represent a quality option as a way to diversify a library collection for English-speaking patrons, particularly young adults, and to enhance teaching lessons with the integration of this global literature.

Blogging the Library
The library has a significant amount of materials on-site. For pleasure or for simply completing assigned work, our library has the resources to help students and staff. The library continually has to keep updating its equipment and technical materials like CDs and IPADS. Otherwise, the technology would be outdated and less useful, if useful at all. [excerpt]

Also, more exciting things have happened! I've completed more of the Research 101 guide, and I'm pretty close to finishing it. I have to say it has been a lot of fun to look at what information is the most useful when doing research, and the best way to phrase the ideas so that it is helpful for students. I think casual but informative is working pretty well. Also, images are a great bonus. Too much text and the reader gets bogged down and it is hard to focus on the options let alone absorb the material. My intern supervisor …

A recent Government Accountability Office study stated that close to 40% of college students decide against buying textbooks. Rising textbook and tuition costs have created an economic crisis for students that has dramatic consequences for their success and ultimate retention and graduation rates. As a result, libraries and faculty are investigating how to incorporate library resources and open educational resources (OER) into required course materials. A new San Jose State University (SJSU) initiative known as “Affordable Learning $olutions” works to provide class resources for students by utilizing library owned electronic resources. This session will explain how the SJSU Library partnered …
