Discovery is a key component of a library's services, and user expectation are high. Even if a Web-scale discovery system is not in the cards, there is plenty a library can do to improve discovery for their users. Librarians at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville have conducted a series of user studies focused on discovery tasks using the library's website and catalog. The lessons learned fro these studies have led to an ongoing redesign of the library's web-site as well as recommendations for instruction. This paper shares successful strategies for evaluating and improving discovery, no expensive software or programming skills necessary.

Introduction:
Serendipity is often the best friend of special collections librarians. Sharing our passion for history and preservation can create happy accidents, connecting us with the caretakers of the remnants of past generations. In fact, libraries come to acquire many cultural treasures, often discovered in the contents of someone's attic, basement, or storage space, because we nurtured a relationship with a potential collector over time.

The C. Y. Thompson (CYT) Library enjoys a location central to east campus. This creates an ideal setting for CYT to serve as a hub for activities of all kinds. And, based upon the feedback from online surveys and face-to-face focus groups, there is no shortage of interest and ideas for how CYT can become the premier gathering place on UNL’s east campus for users from all backgrounds. In spite of this, the primary question needing to be addressed is ‘what is C. Y. Thompson’? Is it a building? Is it a library? Is it something entirely different? The task …

More patrons are using their smart phones and tablets to access library resources as providers add specific applications or Web functionality for their products. This session will cover library services on mobile devices such as e-books, e-journals, electronic indexes, and other mobile applications. We will discuss those subscription services that are mobile ready like EBSCOhost and LibGuides and mobile add-ons such as the iPad app for The Chronicle and the impact this has on licensing and support.

Blogging the Library
During the past few weeks of my internship, I've spent time providing research consultations at the Reference Desk. I initially sat with a librarian during my shift, but I’m now working independently. Since then, I have fielded questions about gender roles in high school guidance offices, the invasive nature of the lionfish species, and the causes of industrialization in early modern Spain. Journals Supporting Terrorism Research: Identification And Investigation Into Their Impact On The Social Sciences, Daryl R. Bullis, Richard Irving
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
A citation analysis of two preeminent terrorism journals (Terrorism and Political Violence and Studies in Conflict and Terrorism) was used to identify 37 additional social science journals of significant importance to terrorism research. Citation data extracted from the Web of Science database was used to investigate the impact of the two journals on the social science journal literature. The impact of the two journals was also analyzed in terms of SSCI subject categories. This study could provide useful information for collection development librarians interested in the social sciences.
