This presentation demonstrated how the UNLV University Libraries Acquisitions team is using Lean principles to analyze and improve acquisitions processes for firm and approval print and electronic monographic workflows. Lean process improvement is a system of concepts and tools to help an organization provide high value and high quality to our users in an efficient manner.

In this session, the presenters provided a brief overview of lean principles and how this system can be adapted to a library setting. The presenters showed working examples of Lean-specific tools, like a Value-Stream map, that helped improve the UNLV Libraries acquisitions process.

Many academic libraries are implementing discovery services as a way of giving their users a single comprehensive search option for all library resources. These tools are designed to change the research experience, yet very few studies have investigated the impact of discovery service implementation. This study examines one aspect of that impact by asking whether usage of publisher-hosted journal content changes after implementation of a discovery tool. Libraries that have begun using the four major discovery services have seen an increase in usage of this content, suggesting that for this particular type of material, discovery services have a positive impact …

Libraries are moving toward online delivery. The distributors of commercial videos re-evaluated both the changing nature of the marketplace and the economic model of selling products. Also the licensing of online and on-demand video content is new and unclearly defined concept and practice. Increasing Access To E-Books Using Qr Codes, Dana Hanford

In order to draw attention to our library's ever-increasing e-book collection, I devised a way to promote select e-books by using QR codes that link a print copy of an e-book cover image to the bibliographic record in our catalog. By using a freely available QR code generator/tracker, I'm able to create a QR code with link for each select e-book cover image. This session is geared towards library staff who would like to increase practical knowledge about collection development and management of DVDs and streaming videos. Video selection includes identifying videos of interest, forming relationships with vendors, issues of pricing, licensing, and copyright fair use versus public performance rights. Video processing involves the steps in providing access to videos through cataloging for local consumption. This includes decisions such as genre and subject heading choices, classification decision, special interest MARC fields. We'll also speak briefly on decisions about packaging, shelving, circulation, weeding, and preservation.

Demand-Driven Acquisitions For Print Books: How Holds Can Help As Much As Interlibrary Loan, Gerrit Van Dyk

While there is a growing field of literature surrounding demanddriven acquisitions (DDA) for electronic books, libraries have been relatively silent regarding DDA for print books, with the notable exception of using interlibrary loan (ILL). This study will discuss how libraries can examine holds queue demand in conjunction with ILL to make collection development decisions related to print materials. It will also discuss how to work with catalogers to deflect ILL requests for these same high-demand items, so they can stay in the library for local patrons.

The Book Vs. E-Book: E-Book Survey Report, Susan R. Silverman

During the Spring Semester 2014 at Winthrop University an E-book survey was administered to Winthrop faculty, staff, and students. The objectives of the survey were (1) to inform the patrons that the library does have e-books available to them, (2) to ascertain if they have used any of the e-books for their research, (3) to determine which format, print or e-book, is their primary preference and (4) which format do they think is most important as part of the permanent library collection. The results, including comments from the faculty, staff and students, were compiled and are presented in this paper.

Shelfscan: Streamlining Library Shelving, Expanding Quality Control, Lauren F. Brown, Jason Zentz, Osman Din

ShelfScan, a web-based application developed in house at Sterling Memorial Library, has streamlined the shelving process at SML and Bass and expanded quality control at multiple libraries by verifying materials scanned with a Bluetooth scanner against the library database.

Prior to ShelfScan, when a book was shelved in the library stacks, it was first opened in order to insert a paper “recently shelved” flag; later it was revisited and reopened to check call number order. This manual accuracy checking did not reveal other anomalies such as incorrect collection, incorrect availability status, or catalog discrepancies. With ShelfScan, books are shelved in …

Recently, a great deal of literature on patron-driven acquisition (PDA) has been published that addresses the implementation and results of PDA programs at academic libraries. However, despite widespread worries that PDA will lead to unbalanced collections, little attention has been paid to whether patrons’ and librarians’ purchasing differ significantly. This study analyzes librarians’ and PDA patrons’ acquisitions at an academic library by relative collecting level and by subject (that is, Library of Congress class and subclass) to determine whether concern over patrons’ collecting are warranted.

How can a university archives establish a successful ongoing relationship with a community organization? What are the benefits and challenges of such a collaboration? University of Massachusetts Boston’s Archives and Special Collections (UASC) explored these questions while working with The Irish Ancestral Research Association (TIARA) to preserve and provide access to 79,000 mortuary records from the Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters. Elements of the collaboration included shifting stewardship of the records from the Foresters to TIARA to UMass Boston, integrating TIARA’s efforts in processing and indexing the records into the Archives’ workflow, providing in-person and electronic access to the records, …
