Information Literacy And The Future Of Digital Information Services At The University Of Jos Library, Vicki Lawal

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper highlights current developments in digital information resources at the University of Jos Library. It examines some of the new opportunities and challenges in digital information services presented by the changing context with respect to Information Literacy and the need for digital information literacy skills training. A case study method was employed for the study; data was collected through the administration of structured questionnaires to the study population. Findings from the study provide relevant policy considerations in digital Information Literacy practices for academic libraries in Nigeria who are going digital in their services.

Probably more than any technology, digital formats have changed the nature of libraries, expanding opportunities for technology advancements and affecting user behaviors. Many lessons have been learned with how eBooks are acquired, licensed by libraries and used worldwide. Libraries are shifting their focus on collections and management, becoming more aware of their community’s mobility, opportunity to read and seek information from many locales, modes and devices. A known and growing commodity, eBooks will only increase their presence and availability.

Today, there is more pressure to show return on investment (ROI) than there used to be thirty, twenty, or even ten years ago. In 1997 the Arkansas State University library had no equitable means of making allocations. Funds had not been reallocated or redistributed in many years. In fact, one department accounted for nearly 20% of all collection development expenditures. After a literature search, the library chose a formula based on one developed Colorado State University as described in SPEC Kit #36.

The present study measured quantitatively the current position and growth of Open Access archives, at the first stage it gives a quantitative overview of Open Access archives established and published from different developing and developed countries. Further it focuses on a comparative study between United States of America (USA) and United Kingdom (UK) the two developed nations. The purpose of this study is to explore the direct and indirect factors underlying the students’ challenges with the use of online information resources in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and propose the implications of these challenges. This study used qualitative descriptive inductive content analysis that enabled the researchers to reveal who said what with respect to the research questions. Collaborative Librarianship

Overview of a multi-year process in a library system that included weeding, inventory, reclamation with OCLC, and a plan for ongoing collection maintenance accomplished across 90 academic, public, special and school libraries of varying sizes in an 11 county federated region. Article addresses general procedures, best practices and expected and unexpected outcomes of the project. Both regional and individual library perspectives are presented with details about project inspiration, funding, planning, implementation strategies and aftereffects.

In 2014 Wayne State University closed its Science & Engineering Library (SEL) converting the building into a mediated storage collection. In 2017 the University received funding from the State of Michigan to convert the SEL into lab and classroom space intended to support our various STEM programs. This project would have a significant impact on our print journal collection, system wide, due to the 600,000 volumes housed in SEL and the limited available space to absorb them in other parts of the library system.
