Ethical And Anti-Oppressive Metadata: A Collaboration Between Catalogers And Archivists At George Mason University Libraries, Liz Beckman, Lynn Eaton, Yoko Ferguson, David Heilbrun, Rachel Lavender, Tricia Mackenzie, Dorothee Schubel

Collaborative Librarianship

Systems of library and archival resource description have historically reinforced the societal power structures of white supremacy, patriarchy, and cis-heteronormativity. Following the framework of critical librarianship and acknowledging our positionality as predominately white departments, George Mason University Libraries’ Metadata Services (MS) and Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) have been engaging in a variety of projects of reparative resource description. To discuss points of collaboration between the two departments, the Task Force for Ethical and Anti-Oppressive Metadata (TEAM) was formed, consisting of staff and faculty members from both groups who work with resource description. Although the departments have a history of …

Term Circles: Using Linked Data As A Tool To Mitigate Colonial Subject Bias, F. Tim Knight

Librarian Publications & Presentations

This paper considers the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) recommendation to “decolonize library access and classification” and begins by exploring the difficulty involved when addressing this recommendation working from within a colonial institution that represents a colonial worldview. It compares general characteristics of Western and Indigenous worldviews and considers the affect that these perspectives have on the organization of knowledge and information especially in relation to a controlled subject vocabulary like the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). It presents the “term circle” as a way to mitigate colonial biases by creating a hybrid subject language system using SKOS …

Traditionally, library data has been designed for the use and consumption of humans, and it is not integrated with the Semantic Web. If we transform library data into linked open data, it will increase the visibility and usage of library data on the Semantic Web. Within the past few years, the calls for transforming library data into linked open data have become more and more frequent. In order to increase the value and discoverability of library data, libraries have been exploring options for making library data available and useful outside of the data silos of the library world through the …

Leveraging Interactive Maps As A Resource Discovery Tool: Envisioning A Repository, Collection Or Series With A Map-Driven Interface, Rachel S. Evans, Keelan Weber

Sandbox Series

Those of us with Digital Commons sites may already have download based live-maps embedded on one or more landing pages of our collections. What if we created a map for end-users to search our series in new ways? In this sandbox, two members of the LSRD-SIS executive board come together to share a show-and-tell-style tour of 3 map-based interfaces for a variety of legal resources, from in-house developed examples to a larger database provider like HeinOnline. Through these examples, we hope attendees will engage in brainstorming ways we could creatively integrate maps to leverage them as a more user-centered discovery …

Academic Libraries And Writing Centers: Collaborations At Us Public Research Universities, Mary K. Bolin

School of Information Student Research Journal

The websites of 71 US research universities were the source of data on the relationship of academic libraries and campus writing centers, which provide support for developing written communication skills. All 71 institutions have writing centers, generally administered by the academic success operation, the English department, or a college such as arts and sciences. Just under half (n=35) of the institutions have a writing center located in the library. In 16 of those institutions, the library is the only location of the writing center. The general issues of academic success and “library as place,” as well as the space that …
