Japan is no longer a rich country. The poverty rate for “a single adult household with at least one child” is the third highest among the 44 countries of OECD. Public libraries should provide study-aid books, workbooks, and IT equipment to poor students. Based of this idea, we first identified 129 study-aid books and workbooks for junior high and high school students. Next, we investigated whether public libraries of all 1,392 Japanese local governments held them. To promote Diversity and Inclusion and conscious metadata editing, the librarians in Cataloging Services at the University of Central Florida collaborated with several departments for the audit and reparative editing of digital collections related to sensitive materials, and enhancement and enrichment of subject headings for physical collections on biographies.

Working with Digital Initiatives, and Special Collections & University Archives, the cataloging librarians have been auditing and editing metadata for The African American Legacy: The Carol Mundy Collection, 1794-2010, The Civil War Collection, and PRISM: Political & Rights Issues & Social Movements. Dr. Bertner, one of founders of the Texas Medical Center in Houston Texas, was its first President from 1945 to 1950. He was also the acting director for the first four years of the existence of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Bertner was active in leading many medical organizations and institutions in the first half of the 20th century in Texas and in the nation. Archives & Distinctive Collections at the College of the Holy Cross is digitizing key components of the Deaf Catholic Archives. This presentation introduces this hidden collection and describes workflows to address such complex issues as content selection, privacy, and permissions while incorporating the nuances of Deaf culture in all processes.

The Kansas Archive-It Consortium (KAIC) is a statewide organization with members from the Kansas Historical Society, FHSU, ESU, KSU, KU, WSU, and Washburn. Since 2017, KAIC has worked to preserve and make accessible web content that aligns with each member’s collecting areas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, members of KAIC worked together to collectively preserve relevant web content. This initiative demonstrated that KAIC could effectively work together on joint projects. In 2019-2020 the Andover Public Library received book challenges on three books in the children’s collection featuring transgender main characters, George by Alex Gino, Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart and I am Jazz by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings. The Library Board rejected the challenges and the books remain in the children’s collections. This presentation will share the story of the challenges and all that transpired, including media attention and a protest. The Lucile Baird papers contains 13 photographs and 4 letters related to the Baptist Memorial Hospital (later Memorial Hospital). The photographs depict hospital staff, interns, nurses, and students. Robert Jolly and Lillian Wilson Burnett Jolly appear in a few photographs, and they are the correspondents with Lucile Baird. Letters include Christmas greeting cards and Baptist Hospital stationary. Photographs and letters appear to have annotations by the creator as well as her niece, Carol Wilde. See more at MS 249.

This collection includes photographs, manuscripts, and reprints related to Dr. John Bowers' involvement with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC). Of particular note are 58 black-and-white photographs of Nagasaki, Japan, taken by Captain Shields Warren (MC) in 1947. There is also a photograph showing Dr. Bowers alongside Carl Tessmer reviewing plans for the ABCC laboratory-clinic in Hiroshima, and another featuring the groundbreaking of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). A third set of photographs depicts Berlin, Germany during the Cold War. See more at MS 242.

Most of the materials date from 1948 to 1962, although some items are undated. Cavagnaro's review of "War Guilt and Medical Research" is from 1992.
