The Library and Archival Department of Sleman Regency, as the organization responsible for the administration of archives in Sleman Regency, has an outreach program for organizing family records called Genta Siaga. The Genta Siaga Program began in 2016 and was carried out every year until 2019. This outreach program was carried out to increase the awareness of the Sleman community towards the arrangement of family records. This is because Sleman Regency itself is one of the disaster-prone areas. Using Google Forms to enter data into an archive gives archivists or organizations options and solutions for making archiving work more effective and efficient. This study aims to find out more about Google Forms in more detail, starting from the definition of Google Forms, the features available on Google Forms, the benefits of Google Forms, and the implementation of Google Forms as an input medium for archival data. The research method uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data collection took place in December 2021 through literature studies and interviews. What is a collection file, anyway? This work-in-progress summarizes the results of a sample survey of archivists to better understand the purpose, function, and contents of collection files, how archivists learn to create collection files, and their potential for public access and use. From these results, we can extrapolate a preliminary definition of the collection file, as well as the potential for future study and critical analysis of the practical elements of collection file work, especially in relation to archival accessioning, deaccessioning, and repatriation.

Adding Linked Open Data To A Digital Humanities Collection In Alma, Sai Deng, Lee Dotson

Working with Digital Initiatives, digital humanities and history faculty members, the Metadata Librarian at the University of Central Florida Libraries has added Linked Open Data (LOD) to Ex Libris’ Alma for the PRINT Migration Network: Pemberton Correspondence Collection. Wikidata entries on people and places in this collection are created and their Uris are linked to the cataloging records. Meanwhile, Library of Congress (LC) linked open data vocabularies, such as LC Subject Headings, LC Name entities, FAST headings and genre headings are also added to the records. GeoNames are incorporated into the University Libraries’ Institutional Repository records and are under consideration …

Presented at the 2023 Archival Kismet Conference "Thinking About Stuff," this presentation explores historical documents found in the Robert H. Merrill papers in the Grand Valley State University Special Collections and University Archives.

In 1920, Robert Hall Merrill, a young civil engineer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, traveled to China to serve as Assistant Principle Engineer on a reconstruction project of a portion of the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal is the longest and oldest canal system in the world. Merrill's work produced a comprehensive survey report of the Grand Canal construction area near the Yellow River. Appraisal strategies can be leveraged to inform decision-making around digital preservation planning, lending curatorial oversight to an area that is often perceived as highly technical. A prioritization matrix is a project management tool to help you narrow down multiple project or task options, and identify the highest-priority areas. They facilitate decision making, are customizable, and easy to read. This poster presentation explores the prioritization matrix methodology used by GVSU Special Collections & University Archives in digital preservation planning.

Candles Burning At Both Ends: Experiences Of Dual-Role Archivist/Librarians, Robert Perret

Workers with both archivist and librarian responsibilities were surveyed to examine their experience of this dual role. Their self-identity, training, responsibilities, and place of work are explored, as well as their feeling of being prepared for a dual role. This study finds that while the preponderance of respondents feel prepared, more than half regularly engage in more than 40 job activities spanning both archives and libraries. The diversity of responsibilities, combined with the tension between two distinct professions, places significant strain on those in a dual role. At the same time, respondents felt isolated and underappreciated, and expressed feelings of …

Neon signs in Nevada capture the spirit of glitzy gambling meccas, boom and bust towns, and frontier settlements that dot the vast geography of this unique state. However, many iconic and hidden signs are in constant danger of disappearing as populations shift and the elements naturally break down the physical aspects of the signs. In addition, neon signs in Reno and remote, Northern Nevada locales have remained relatively undiscovered.
