Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship

Film-based photographic collections of nitrate negatives pose major challenges to preservation and access because of unstable media and the lack of item-level indexing. Digitization offers an opportunity to capture the content of deteriorating negatives, to extend access to them, and to restore their usefulness as information resources. Digitization as a preservation strategy has been the subject of ongoing debate. This article contributes to the discussion by exploring access to and the preservation of film-based photographic collections and by presenting the digiti- zation project at the American Geographical Society Library as a case study. This scrapbook includes a compilation of newspaper clippings from a variety of sources and covers the mid-1930s. Approximately one-half of these clippings focus on stories related to St. Petersburg or Florida more broadly, while the remainder cover events as broad as English royalty to the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-1936). The compiler of the materials in this scrapbook is unknown, though the name “Billy Dean” appears on this document. It is uncertain as to whether this was an actual proper name, or whether it was a nickname or pseudonym. Jen Runyon donated this scrapbook and another one that captures the activities …

Emil August Nordstrom served as an engineer for the City of St. Petersburg, later as a partner in an architectural and engineering firm in St. Petersburg, and also as executive director of the Housing Authority of St. Petersburg. Born in 1883 or 1884, Nordstrom passed away in St. Petersburg on August 26, 1973, and was survived by his daughter, Dorothy King. This small scrapbook contains clippings and information about Nordstrom’s engineering work and structures he was involved with in the City of St. Petersburg between 1926 and 1937. This Assessment in Action project addressed the effect of using original primary materials on first-year students’ information literacy (IL) and critical thinking skills. IL and critical thinking are among Augustana College’s college-wide student learning outcomes. More than 25% of Augustana first-years use Special Collections each year, yet we had little data on how this affected student learning. The study evaluated a worksheet given as a pre- and post-test around class visits to work in Special Collections, and papers by students who did and did not visit Special Collections with class.

Managers of institutional repositories are offered much advice, from national organizations (like SPARC) and promoters of movements like Open Access or products like Creative Commons licenses. This presentation is about how Nebraska's IR has succeeded despite not following the advice offered by experts, publishing consultants, and "thought leaders" in scholarly communications.

The advice generally offered includes: 1.Use open source software 2.Expect faculty to self-archive 3.Seek campus “mandate” or deposit policy 4.Promote author-rights addendum 5.Provide funds for gold OA fees 6.Participate in Open Access events 7.Promote Creative Commons licenses 8.Require peer review for original publishing and 9.Assign all possible identifiers.
