On Baryon Number Non-Conservation In Two-Dimensional O(2n+1) Qcd, Tamar Friedmann 2010 Massachusetts Institute of Technology

On Baryon Number Non-Conservation In Two-Dimensional O(2n+1) Qcd, Tamar Friedmann

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

We construct a classical dynamical system whose phase space is a certain infinite dimensional Grassmannian manifold, and propose that it is equivalent to the large N limit of two-dimensional QCD with an O(2N + 1) gauge group. In this theory, we find that baryon number is a topological quantity that is conserved only modulo 2. We also relate this theory to the master field approach to matrix models.

Bicircular Matroids With Circuits Of At Most Two Sizes, Torina Deachune Lewis 2010 University of Mississippi

Bicircular Matroids With Circuits Of At Most Two Sizes, Torina Deachune Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Young in his paper titled, Matroid Designs in 1973, reports that Murty in his paper titled, Equicardinal Matroids and Finite Geometries in 1968, was the first to study matroids with all hyperplanes having the same size. Murty called such a matroid an ``Equicardinal Matroid''. Young renamed such a matroid a ``Matroid Design''. Further work on determining properties of these matroids was done by Edmonds, Murty, and Young in their papers published in 1972, 1973, and 1970 respectively. These authors were able to connect the problem of determining the matroid designs with specified parameters with results on balanced incomplete block designs. …

Embracing The Vision: Our Work With Teachers Implementing Gps, Sarah Ledford, Wendy B. Sanchez

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

Abstract: In 2005, three Kennesaw State University mathematics education faculty members began a series of workshops titled “Implementing the Georgia Performance Standards [GPS]: Embracing the Vision.” This workshop series has been underwritten by Georgia’s Teacher Quality Higher Education Program. The first series of workshops began with 6th grade teachers the first year the GPS was implemented and the project has been funded each subsequent year since its inception. Currently, we are working with Math III teachers as they implement the course for the first time. The initial focus for the project was on conceptual understanding versus procedural understanding, writing tasks …

A New Nonlinear Classifier With A Penalized Signed Fuzzy Measure Using Effective Genetic Algorithm, Julia Hua Fang, Maria L. Rizzo, Honggang Wang, Kimberly Espy, Zhenyuan Wang 2010 University of Nebraska

A New Nonlinear Classifier With A Penalized Signed Fuzzy Measure Using Effective Genetic Algorithm, Julia Hua Fang, Maria L. Rizzo, Honggang Wang, Kimberly Espy, Zhenyuan Wang

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a new nonlinear classifier based on a generalized Choquet integral with signed fuzzy measures to enhance the classification accuracy and power by capturing all possible interactions among two or more attributes. This generalized approach was developed to address unsolved Choquet-integral classification issues such as allowing for flexible location of projection lines in n-dimensional space, automatic search for the least misclassification rate based on Choquet distance, and penalty on misclassified points. A special genetic algorithm is designed to implement this classification optimization with fast convergence. Both the numerical experiment and empirical case studies show that this generalized …

From Permutahedron To Associahedron, Colum Watt, Thomas Brady 2010 Technological University Dublin

From Permutahedron To Associahedron, Colum Watt, Thomas Brady

Articles

For each finite real reflection group $W$, we identify a copy of the type-$W$ simplicial generalised associahedron inside the corresponding simplicial permutahedron. This defines a bijection between the facets of the generalised associahedron and the elements of the type-$W$ non-crossing partition lattice which is more tractable than previous such bijections. We show that the simplicial fan determined by this associahedron coincides with the Cambrian fan for $W$.

Climbing Eements In Finite Coxeter Groups, Colum Watt, Thomas Brady, Aisling Kenny

Articles

We define the notion of a climbing element in a finite real reflection group relative to a total order on the reflection set and we characterise these elements in the case where the total order arises from a bipartite Coxeter element.

Schrödinger Operators With Δ'Interactions And The Krein–Stieltjes String, Aleksey Kostenko, M. M. Malamud 2010 Dublin Institute of Technology

Schrödinger Operators With Δ'Interactions And The Krein–Stieltjes String, Aleksey Kostenko, M. M. Malamud

Articles

We investigate one dimensional symmetric Schrödinger operator HX, β with δ' interactions of strength β = ⊂ on a discrete set X = ⊂ [0, b), b ≤ +∞ (xn ↑ b). We consider HX, β as an extension of the minimal operator Hmin := –d2/dx2 (\X) and study its spectral properties in the frame work of the extension theory by using the technique of boundary triplets and the corresponding Weyl functions. The construction of a boundary triplet for is given in the case d∗ := infn ∈ |xn – xn – 1| = 0. We show that spectral properties …

Mathematical Reasoning In Service Courses: Why Students Need Mathematical Modeling Problems, Kris H. Green, Allen Emerson 2010 University of Montana

Mathematical Reasoning In Service Courses: Why Students Need Mathematical Modeling Problems, Kris H. Green, Allen Emerson

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper we argue that conventional mathematics word problems are not aligned with the typical learning goals and expectations partner disciplines, especially business, have in requiring that their students take mathematics courses. Using the taxonomy of educational objectives presented by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001) we show how mathematical modeling problems can be used to promote the needed alignment and contrast two examples to illustrate the differences. We then demonstrate how the more conventional word problem can be rewritten as a modeling problem. Sample assessment materials and instructional activities are included to support teachers in making the transition to the …

A Projection-Based Error Analysis Of Hdg Methods, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Bernardo Cockburn, Francisco-Javier Sayas 2010 Portland State University

A Projection-Based Error Analysis Of Hdg Methods, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Bernardo Cockburn, Francisco-Javier Sayas

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We introduce a new technique for the error analysis of hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods. The technique relies on the use of a new projection whose design is inspired by the form of the numerical traces of the methods. This renders the analysis of the projections of the discretization errors simple and concise. By showing that these projections of the errors are bounded in terms of the distance between the solution and its projection, our studies of influence of the stabilization parameter are reduced to local analyses of approximation by the projection. We illustrate the technique on a specific HDG …

A Class Of Discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin Methods. Part I: The Transport Equation, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan 2010 University of Texas at Austin

A Class Of Discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin Methods. Part I: The Transport Equation, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Considering a simple model transport problem, we present a new finite element method. While the new method fits in the class of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods, it differs from standard DG and streamline diffusion methods, in that it uses a space of discontinuous trial functions tailored for stability. The new method, unlike the older approaches, yields optimal estimates for the primal variable in both the element size h and polynomial degree p, and outperforms the standard upwind DG method.

Hybridization And Postprocessing Techniques For Mixed Eigenfunctions, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan, F. Li, Ngoc Cuong Nguyen, Jaume Peraire 2010 University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

Hybridization And Postprocessing Techniques For Mixed Eigenfunctions, Bernardo Cockburn, Jay Gopalakrishnan, F. Li, Ngoc Cuong Nguyen, Jaume Peraire

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We introduce hybridization and postprocessing techniques for the Raviart–Thomas approximation of second-order elliptic eigenvalue problems. Hybridization reduces the Raviart–Thomas approximation to a condensed eigenproblem. The condensed eigenproblem is nonlinear, but smaller than the original mixed approximation. We derive multiple iterative algorithms for solving the condensed eigenproblem and examine their interrelationships and convergence rates. An element-by-element postprocessing technique to improve accuracy of computed eigenfunctions is also presented. We prove that a projection of the error in the eigenspace approximation by the mixed method (of any order) superconverges and that the postprocessed eigenfunction approximations converge faster for smooth eigenfunctions. Numerical experiments using …

Phase-Linking And The Perceived Motion During Off-Vertical Axis Rotation, Jan Holly, Scott Wood, Gin McCollum 2010 Portland State University

Phase-Linking And The Perceived Motion During Off-Vertical Axis Rotation, Jan Holly, Scott Wood, Gin Mccollum

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Human off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) in the dark typically produces perceived motion about a cone, the amplitude of which changes as a function of frequency. This perception is commonly attributed to the fact that both the OVAR and the conical motion have a gravity vector that rotates about the subject. Little-known, however, is that this rotating-gravity explanation for perceived conical motion is inconsistent with basic observations about self-motion perception: (a) that the perceived vertical moves toward alignment with the gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA) and (b) that perceived translation arises from perceived linear acceleration, as derived from the portion of the GIA …

A Class Of Discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin Methods. Ii. Optimal Test Functions, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan 2010 University of Texas at Austin

A Class Of Discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin Methods. Ii. Optimal Test Functions, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We lay out a program for constructing discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin (DPG) schemes having test function spaces that are automatically computable to guarantee stability. Given a trial space, a DPG discretization using its optimal test space counterpart inherits stability from the well posedness of the undiscretized problem. Although the question of stable test space choice had attracted the attention of many previous authors, the novelty in our approach lies in the fact we identify a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) framework wherein test functions, arbitrarily close to the optimal ones, can be locally computed. The idea is presented abstractly and its feasibility illustrated through …

Some Implications Of Chu's 10Ψ10 Generalization Of Bailey's 6Ψ6 Summation Formula, James McLaughlin, Andrew Sills, Peter Zimmer 2010 West Chester University of Pennsylvania

Some Implications Of Chu's 10Ψ10 Generalization Of Bailey's 6Ψ6 Summation Formula, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills, Peter Zimmer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Lucy Slater used Bailey's 6Ã6 summation formula to derive the Bailey pairs she used to construct her famous list of 130 identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type.

In the present paper we apply the same techniques to Chu's 10Ã10 generalization of Bailey's formula to produce quite general Bailey pairs. Slater's Bailey pairs are then recovered as special limiting cases of these more general pairs.

In re-examining Slater's work, we find that her Bailey pairs are, for the most part, special cases of more general Bailey pairs containing one or more free parameters. Further, we also find new …

General Wp-Bailey Chains, James McLaughlin, Peter Zimmer 2010 West Chester University of Pennsylvania

General Wp-Bailey Chains, James Mclaughlin, Peter Zimmer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Motivated by a recent paper of Liu and Ma, we describe a number of general WP-Bailey chains. We show that many of the existing WP-Bailey chains (or branches of the WP-Bailey tree), including chains found by Andrews, Warnaar and Liu and Ma, arise as special cases of these general WP-Bailey chains. We exhibit three new branches of the WP-Bailey tree, branches which also follow as special cases of these general WP-Bailey chains. Finally, we describe a number of new transformation formulae for basic hypergeometric series which arise as consequences of these new WP-Bailey chains.

Continued Fraction Proofs Of M-Versions Of Some Identities Of Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater Type, Douglas Bowman, James McLaughlin, Nancy Wyshinksi 2010 Northern Illinois University

Continued Fraction Proofs Of M-Versions Of Some Identities Of Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater Type, Douglas Bowman, James Mclaughlin, Nancy Wyshinksi

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We derive two general transformations for certain basic hypergeometric series from the recurrence formulae for the partial numerators and denominators of two q-continued fractions previously investigated by the authors. By then specializing certain free parameters in these transformations, and employing various identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type, we derive m-versions of these identities. Some of the identities thus found are new, and some have been derived previously by other authors, using different methods. By applying certain transformations due to Watson, Heine and Ramanujan, we derive still more examples of such m-versions of Rogers Ramanujan-type identities.

An Identity Motivated By An Amazing Identity Of Ramanujan, James McLaughlin 2010 West Chester University of Pennsylvania

An Identity Motivated By An Amazing Identity Of Ramanujan, James Mclaughlin

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Ramanujan stated an identity to the effect that if three sequences {an}, {bn} and {cn} are defined by r1(x) =: ∑∞ n=0 anx n , r2(x) =: ∑∞ n=0 bnx n and r3(x) =: ∑∞ n=0 cnx n (here each ri(x) is a certain rational function in x), then a 3 n + b 3 n − c 3 n = (−1)n , ∀ n ≥ 0. Motivated by this amazing identity, we state and prove a more general identity involving eleven sequences, the new identity being ”more general” in the sense that equality holds not just for the power …

Some New Transformations For Bailey Pairs And Wp-Bailey Pairs, James McLaughlin 2010 West Chester University of Pennsylvania

Some New Transformations For Bailey Pairs And Wp-Bailey Pairs, James Mclaughlin

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We derive several new transformations relating WP-Bailey pairs. We also consider the corresponding relations relating standard Bailey pairs, and as a consequence, derive some quite general expansions for products of theta functions which can also be expressed as certain types of Lambert series.
