Trends In Phishing Attacks: Suggestions For Future Research, Ryan M. Schuetzler 2011 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Trends In Phishing Attacks: Suggestions For Future Research, Ryan M. Schuetzler

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Deception in computer-mediated communication is a widespread phenomenon. Cyber criminals are exploiting technological mediums to communicate with potential targets as these channels reduce both the deception cues and the risk of detection itself. A prevalent deception-based attack in computer-mediated communication is phishing. Prior phishing research has addressed the “bait” and “hook” components of phishing attacks, the human-computer interaction that takes place as users judge the veracity of phishing emails and websites, and the development of technologies that can aid users in identifying and rejecting these attacks. Despite the extant research on this topic, phishing attacks continue to be successful as …

Checkpointing And Recovery In Distributed And Database Systems, Jiang Wu 2011 University of Kentucky

Checkpointing And Recovery In Distributed And Database Systems, Jiang Wu

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

A transaction-consistent global checkpoint of a database records a state of the database which reflects the effect of only completed transactions and not the re- sults of any partially executed transactions. This thesis establishes the necessary and sufficient conditions for a checkpoint of a data item (or the checkpoints of a set of data items) to be part of a transaction-consistent global checkpoint of the database. This result would be useful for constructing transaction-consistent global checkpoints incrementally from the checkpoints of each individual data item of a database. By applying this condition, we can start from any useful checkpoint of …

Proposal – The authors propose a generally applicable web-based interface, which provides PIR developers and evaluators with: i) implicit recommendations on how to evaluate a specific PIR system; ii) a repository containing studies on user-centred and layered evaluation studies; iii) recommendations on how to best combine different evaluation methods, metrics and …

Making Memory: Techne, Technology, And The Refashioning Of Contemporary Memory, Kimberly Lacey 2011 Wayne State University

Making Memory: Techne, Technology, And The Refashioning Of Contemporary Memory, Kimberly Lacey

Wayne State University Dissertations

My dissertation answers two questions: Does the tension between interactive technologies and rhetoric re-shape the nature and relevance of the canon of memory? Do interactive technologies affect the ways we remember and persuade? I argue that my interpretation of techne suggests possibilities for the creation and production of new types of memory in combination with digital media. To interrogate this connection, I suggest three interpretations of the Greek concept, techne: as a process that is inherently productive; as a force that renegotiates contemporary sources of social power; and as a skill that balances expert knowledge with instrumentality. I explore …

Learning Without Onboarding: How Assessing And Evaluating Learning Benefits New Information Technology Hires, Dory L. Morris

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Onboarding ensures learning success through sharing and acquiring knowledge to remain competitive. However, little is known about new Information Technology (IT) hires' learning needs in the absence of onboarding; therefore, the purpose of this case study was to examine, increase, and retain their technical knowledge at the Unified Communications Company (UCC). Following the theoretical model of knowledge management, which holds that knowledge is the key to confirm learning and knowledge sharing, the research questions were used to examine how the company assessed and increased their technical knowledge and how they taught their culture in the absence of onboarding. A qualitative …

Asset Reuse Of Images From A Repository, Deirdre Herman 2011 Walden University

Asset Reuse Of Images From A Repository, Deirdre Herman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

According to Markus's theory of reuse, when digital repositories are deployed to collect and distribute organizational assets, they supposedly help ensure accountability, extend information exchange, and improve productivity. Such repositories require a large investment due to the continuing costs of hardware, software, user licenses, training, and technical support. The problem addressed in this study was the lack of evidence in the literature on whether users in fact reused enough digital assets in repositories to justify the investment. The objective of the study was to investigate the organizational value of repositories to better inform architectural, construction, software and other industries whether …

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Presentations

Visualization using advanced computational and graphic equipment has become a standard way of present day research. Availability of low cost and fast processing units, high resolution displays with graphic processing units, and specialized software has brought complex visualization capabilities to an office desktop. Nevertheless, when dealing with large datasets such as, global climate, geospatial, and social data the office desktop falls short and calls for a centralized visualization facility with high end computing and graphics equipment.

Visualization Facility at GIS and Remote Sensing Core Lab would be a useful and important addition to the UNLV IT infrastructure. It would provide …

Real-Time Traffic Estimation Using Data Expansion, Roger LEDERMAN, Laura WYNTER 2011 Singapore Management University

Real-Time Traffic Estimation Using Data Expansion, Roger Lederman, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a method for estimating missing real-time traffic volumes on a road network using both historical and real-time traffic data. The method was developed to address urban transportation networks where a non-negligible subset of the network links do not have real-time link volumes, and where that data is needed to populate other real-time traffic analytics. Computation is split between an offline calibration and a real-time estimation phase. The offline phase determines link-to-link splitting probabilities for traffic flow propagation that are subsequently used in real-time estimation. The real-time procedure uses current traffic data and is efficient enough to scale …

An Effective Approach To Pose Invariant 3d Face Recognition, Dayong WANG, Steven C. H. HOI, Ying HE 2011 Nanyang Technological University

An Effective Approach To Pose Invariant 3d Face Recognition, Dayong Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Ying He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One critical challenge encountered by existing face recognition techniques lies in the difficulties of handling varying poses. In this paper, we propose a novel pose invariant 3D face recognition scheme to improve regular face recognition from two aspects. Firstly, we propose an effective geometry based alignment approach, which transforms a 3D face mesh model to a well-aligned 2D image. Secondly, we propose to represent the facial images by a Locality Preserving Sparse Coding (LPSC) algorithm, which is more effective than the regular sparse coding algorithm for face representation. We conducted a set of extensive experiments on both 2D and 3D …
