Thai native chicken meat is a high-quality protein source of unique flavor. Genetic preservation and breeding programs are beneficial to maintain purebred populations. Aiming at improving post-thawed sperm quality, this study is the first to apply extracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATPe) in freezing extender to preserve Thai native chicken sperm. Eight semen samples from eight Thai native chickens (n = 8) were included. Initial semen evaluation and sperm size measurement were performed. A 19-year-old gelding polo pony was presented with a prominent protuberance at the tip of the right elbow and five days later, developed a marked swelling on the entire right foreleg with a high fever. Ultrasonography, performed on the caudal elbow region, demonstrated heterogeneous echogenic materials encapsulated in the fibrous capsule. The initial hematological analysis revealed anemia and a normal white blood count (WBC). Hyperbilirubinemia was detected biochemically. Pale yellow/turbid fluid was aspirated from the protuberance area, which showed septic exudate characteristics and contained Streptococcus spp. The pony was diagnosed with septic olecranon bursitis associated with streptococcal infection. A five-year old, intact male, German Shepherd dog was presented to the hospital due to a history of depression, anorexia, vomiting and diarrhea. Physical examination revealed moderate emaciation and showed mild abdominal pain when Palpation. Abdominal radiographs and ultrasounds showed the distension of the small bowel loop due to partial obstruction of the colon by mural concentric thickening. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed an homogeneous, soft tissue mass with asymmetric thickening of the cecum traversing the colonic wall. Two 3-month-old, male, domestic short hair, cats of the same litter were presented to the small animal teaching hospital with the clinical sign of head tremor for 2 weeks. Three months later, the clinical sign had worsened. Both kittens had loss of balance and showed intention tremor. Physical examination revealed hypertelorism, depressed bridge of the nose and back pain. Radiography showed shortened cervicothoracic vertebral bodies. Zilpaterol is a β2-adrenergic agonist medication approved in certain countries as a cattle feed additive to improve carcass quality. Trace amounts of Zilpaterol can transfer to horse feed, yielding equine urinary “identifications” of Zilpaterol. These “identifications” occur because Zilpaterol is highly bioavailable in horses, resistant to biotransformation and excreted as unchanged Zilpaterol in urine, where it has a 5 day or so terminal half-life.

In horses, urinary steady-state concentrations are reached 25 days (5 half-lives) after exposure to contaminated feed. Zilpaterol readily presents in horse urine, yielding clusters of feed related Zilpaterol identifications in racehorses. The first cluster, April …

Biliary diseases are uncommon, potentially fatal causes of acute abdomen in dogs. Little information is present comparing the performance of computed tomography (CT) to ultrasound in identifying canine biliary pathology. Thirty-five client-owned dogs presenting for acute abdomen signs received an abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced abdominal CT. Two authors reviewed the randomized, anonymized CT and ultrasound studies. Twenty-eight dogs had biliary pathology and seven dogs serving as controls had no evidence of biliary disease. The final diagnoses of patients with biliary pathology included cholelithiasis, gallbladder mucoceles, cholangiohepatitis/cholangitis, extrahepatic biliary obstruction, gallbladder wall edema, gallbladder wall mass, and cystic mucosal hyperplasia. The necessity of heartworm prevention in the canine patient is undisputed and well-known among veterinary professionals, yet there are still many dogs not protected from this fatal parasite. Heartworm prevention traditionally requires a once-a-month administration of medication; therefore, its efficacy relies on owner compliance. Invasive mice (Mus spp.) can negatively impact island species and ecosystems. Because fewer island rodent eradications have been attempted for mice compared to rats (Rattus spp.), less is known about efficacy and palatability of rodenticide baits for mouse eradications. We performed a series of bait acceptance and efficacy cage trials using a standard formulation of brodifacoum-based rodenticide on wild-caught mice from Sand Island, Midway Atoll, to help inform a proposed eradication there. We detected Eurasian-origin highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus belonging to the Gs/GD lineage, clade 2.3.4.4b, in wild waterfowl in 2 Atlantic coastal states in the United States. Bird banding data showed widespread movement of waterfowl within the Atlantic Flyway and between neighboring flyways and northern breeding grounds.

BACKGROUND: Canine transmissible venereal tumour (CTVT) is a naturally occurring neoplasia affecting dogs worldwide. Previous CTVT studies in Grenada were limited to case records of dogs with neoplastic conditions at a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

OBJECTIVES: The present retrospective study aimed to determine the occurrence and risk factors of CTVT in a wider population of owned dogs presented to a university-affiliated veterinary hospital between 2008 and 2018.

METHODS: Data on the age, breed, gender, and gonadectomy status were retrieved from an electronic database and analyzed using logistic regression.

We compared isotopic values of δ¹³C or δ¹⁵N taken from hair of 32 beaver, representing seven colonies in northern Alabama, USA to determine 1) if colonies of beaver show overlap in isotopic niche width as a result of the similar use of food resources and 2) if individual trophic niche specialization occurs within colonies. Opioid drugs have the potential of provide local analgesia in inflamed joints. To date, morphine is the only opioid that has been tested for intra-articular (IA) administration in horses. Having an alternative drug, other than morphine, could widen the therapeutic options, particularly in cases of drug shortages or inaccessibility to specific drugs. The work presented in this dissertation reports the cytotoxic effects of buprenorphine on cultured equine chondrocytes, and the pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and analgesic effects, of IA administered buprenorphine in horses with experimentally induced synovitis.
