The present report records the simultaneous occurrence of ischnoceran lice Columbicola phoenicopterae and Coloceras setosum on the Yellow-legged Green Pigeon in India. The prevalence, intensity of infestation, range of infestation, and nature of the antennal sensilla of these 2 species on 12 of these pigeons have also been recorded.

The cricoarytenoideus lateralis muscle (CALM) is an adductor of the arytenoid cartilages but is not directly involved in the pathogenesis of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN) as the abductor cricoarytenoideus dorsalis muscle (CADM) is. Nevertheless, the CALM is the first muscle to experience a neurogenic atrophy in the course of RLN and this feature explains its potential importance in RLN diagnosis. Using Jining Grey goat ear marginal tissues as experimental materials, we succeeded in establishing a fibroblast cell bank, including 32 samples, by means of a primary explant and cryopreservation technique. The results from the biological analysis suggested that the population doubling time of the cell line was approximately 48 h. The diploid accounted for 98.35%, the isozyme analysis of the lactic dehydrogenase and malic dehydrogenase disproved cross contamination, and the results of the bacterium, fungi, virus, and mycoplasma detection tests were all negative. The main objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Escherichia coli isolates in feces of pigs and their production environments on farms. A total of 560 isolates of Escherichia coli, from 112 samples obtained from weaner and finisher pigs, feed, water, and house sparrows on 8 farrow-to-finish farms, were tested for susceptibility to 16 antimicrobials. The prevalence of resistance varied widely (0.0% to 69.5%) among the antimicrobials tested. From the tested swines, 75.75% of the isolates were resistant to one or more antimicrobials. Resistance was significantly more frequent (P = 0.005, P < 0.01) in swine isolates compared to those from feed, water, and sparrows and significantly more frequent (P = 0.007, P < 0.01) in weaner pigs compared to finisher pigs. The findings indicate that resistance to a broad range of antimicrobials was prevalent among fecal E. coli isolates of swine on the study farms. Fortunately, E. coli was not isolated from the feed, water, and house sparrows.

The present investigation was carried out on 12,859 fortnightly test-day milk yield records of first lactation pertaining to 643 Sahiwal cows spread over a period of 49 years (1961-2009), maintained at the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India. The comparison of 3 lactation curve models, i.e. the quadratic model, gamma-type function, and mixed log function, was done using fortnightly test-day milk yield records. The mixed log function was the best fit, with the highest (88.75%) coefficient of determination (R2 value) and the lowest (0.08 kg) root mean square error (RMSE) value, whereas the lowest (56.93%) R2 value was observed in …

This case report aims to highlight the utility of the jaundice foal agglutination (JFA) test used in the prevention of neonatal foal death caused by equine neonatal isoerythrolysis. The colostrum and the serum of a Friesian mare with repeated neonatal foal deaths and the whole blood of her newborn foal were tested for 5 days with the JFA test to detect a probable incompatibility. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) became an economically important crop in North Dakota in the 1970s, providing a major source of food for post-breeding blackbirds (Icteridae). Reducing local blackbird populations with rice grains treated with an avicide is one proposed alternative for reducing sunflower damage. In fall 2007 and 2008, we evaluated the idea of attracting blackbirds to rice-baited trays attached to wire cages supplied with live blackbirds. During our observations (1011 h), we saw 3888 birds, consisting of 25 species and 12 families, on the bait trays. The stress response of wild and captive reared rainbowfish (Melanoteania duboulayi) following chasing by a simulated predator was examined. Cortisol release rate was monitored using a flow through system by measuring water borne hormone levels. Tests using known cortisol concentrations revealed that the technique yielded 95% of the cortisol present in the water. Cortisol release rates increased several fold in both populations after being chased but peaked at different time periods. Wild fish showed a typical stress response with release rate rising to (2.29±0.22 ng g−1 h−1) 2 h after exposure followed by rapid recovery. The captive-reared …

The objective of this study was to characterize the patterns of ovarian follicular waves, and FSH and P4concentration during estrous cycle in Thai native cattle (Bos indicus). Transrectal ultrasound examination of ovarieswas performed daily using a 7.5 MHz transducer and blood samples were collected after the ultrasound examinationduring May to August, 2010. There were 1-, 2- or 3-follicular waves per cycle in heifers, and 1-, 2-, 3- or 4-follicularwaves per cycle in cows. Moreover, in cows, only one cycle exhibited 4-follicular wave pattern. The purpose of this study was to report on the incidence of patellar luxation in 128 dogs out of a total of 317dogs (40.3%) treated at orthopedic clinics in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from October 2006 through May 2011. Patellarluxation was most frequently found in small breeds, among which Poodles were the most commonly affected (34.3%).Most luxations were medial (89%), and 57.8% of affected dogs were female. Uniluxation of the patella was found in63%, and biluxation in 37%. Most dogs were classified as patellar luxation grade III. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of ethanol and acetone in dehydration of canine bodysheets before preservation in resin for a 16-week period.
