This study was performed to determine the efficacies of Lavandula officinalis, Foeniculum vulgare, and Laurus nobilis essential oils on the control of Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae), the most common parasite of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.). Experimental colonies from the province of Bursa, Turkey, were divided into 5 homogeneous groups of 8 hives each. Ectopic adrenal tissue has been reported to occur in equine ovaries and testes, more frequently in stressed, ill, or pregnant animals. In this study, the presence and endocrine activity of ectopic adrenal tissue in equine gonads was investigated. In 278 pairs of ovaries and 100 pairs of testes, the anomaly was observed with a comparable prevalence of 6%-9%; the tissue appeared as nodules, found on the ovarian surface and in the mediastinum. Microscopically, these usually appeared disorganized, with a tendency toward differentiation into the zonae in larger nodules. A 3-year-old female dog was referred to the clinics of İstanbul University with the complaint of abdominal distention. On the basis of the clinical findings and ultrasonography, a mass was detected in the left ovary. An ovariohysterectomy was performed. Grossly, the mass, with dimensions of 15 × 11 × 8 cm, weighed 1.2 kg and contained hairs, cysts, fat, bone, and cartilage on the cut surface. Histology revealed the occurrence of well-differentiated components of all 3 germ layers and the mass was diagnosed as a benign mature cystic teratoma.

This study aimed to investigate the histopathological changes that occurred in the wound of the sole ulcer located on the hooves of dairy cattle. A total of 12 Holstein-Frisian dairy cows suffering from sole ulcer were studied. Postmortem spermatozoa recovery is an important tool for harvesting germplasm from genetically meritorious animals and endangered species. The principal motive of this study was to find out whether ram spermatozoa within epididymides kept at 4 °C for 48 h retain their quality in terms of progressive motility, viability, and acrosomal status. Twenty-four testicles with attached epididymides were collected with 8 samples each processed at 0, 24, and 48 h of storage. A good number of motile spermatozoa could be recovered from epididymides by incision method with up to 48 h of storage, although their quality declined significantly (P < 0.05) as postmortem storage time increased (motility: 83.33 ± 1.05%, 63.33 ± 2.47%, and 44.17 ± 1.53%; and epididymal sperm output (millions): 3500.00 ± 73.97, 1220.00 ± 1.01, and 666.67 ± 19.78 for 0 (control), 24, and 48 h, respectively). Viability and intact acrosomes (%) were also acceptable, although they decreased significantly with up to 24 h of storage. In conclusion, ram epididymides could be stored at 4 °C for 48 h when epididymal spermatozoa cannot be immediately harvested and cryopreserved.

These studies were carried out on 14 adult (9 males and 5 females) Equus przewalskii f. caballus (Linnaeus, 1758) horses, using both the skulls and mandibles. All of the material originated from 3 Polish archaeological sites that date back to the Early Medieval period. The most extensive craniometrical investigations consisted of 40 skull measurements and 16 mandible measurements. The effects of prestorage leukoreduction and storage duration on the in vitro quality parameters of canine packed red blood cells (pRBCs) stored in saline-adenine-glucose-mannitol (SAGM) were investigated. Hematological, biochemical, and morphological changes in filtered and unfiltered pRBCs were determined each week during 42 days of storage. All of the parameters changed significantly during storage. The effects of leukoreduction on leukocyte and erythrocyte count, packed cell volume, hemoglobin content, and erythrocyte morphology were significant. While supernatant K increased during storage, glucose, Cl, and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) concentrations decreased. On 2 June 2010, an abnormally pigmented specimen of Solea solea L. with a total length of 222 mm was obtained near Tuzla, from the İzmir Bay of the Aegean Sea. This is the first record of abnormal pigmentation in the wild common sole from the Aegean Sea. The specimen fish is patterned with both hypermelanosis on the blind side and hypomelanosis on the ocular side. This kind of malpigmentation in any flatfish is not typical.

The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) glycoprotein 4 (GP4) resembles a typical type I membrane protein in its structure but lacks a hydrophilic tail at the C-terminus, suggesting that GP4 may be a lipid-anchored membrane protein. Using the human decay-accelerating factor (DAF; CD55), a known glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI) lipid-anchored protein, chimeric constructs were made to substitute the GPI-anchor domain of DAF with the putative lipid-anchor domain of GP4, and their membrane association and lipase cleavage were determined in cells. In this study, we describe the fusion of FPs to three proteins of pseudorabies virus (PRV) that allowed imaging of capsids in living cells. Included in this study are the first recombinant PRV strains expressing FP–pUL25 fusions based on a design applied to herpes simplex virus type 1 by Homa and colleagues. In this report, we have addressed the role of copper–zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1) deficiency in the mediation of central nervous system autoimmunity. We demonstrate that SOD1-deficient C57Bl/6 mice develop more severe autoimmune encephalomyelitis induced with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) 35–55, compared with wild type mice. This alteration in the disease phenotype was not due to aberrant expansion of MOG-specific T cells nor their ability to produce inflammatory cytokines; rather lymphocytes generated in SOD1-deficient mice were more prone to spontaneous cell death when compared with their wild type littermate controls. A 4-year old, primiparous, female Anatolian Shepherd dog was presented for evaluation of type II vaginal prolapse with alopecia of the left perineal skin. Hematological analyses demonstrated leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia. Estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) levels were 156 pg/mL and 2.3 ng/mL, respectively. The vaginal smear was predominantly (at least 80%) made up of anuclear superficial cells. An abdominal ultrasonography revealed a heterogeneous multicystic mass with anechoic areas adjacent to the caudal pole of the left kidney. An ovariohysterectomy was performed. The patient in this study was a 20-year-old thoroughbred gelding. After clinical and radiographical assessments, a bilateral rostral mandibular body fracture was determined. Fracture stabilization was achieved via a bilateral interfragmentary cerclage wire application. The horse started to use its jaw within 24 h of surgery. Postoperative radiographs were taken until month 6, at different periods, and fracture healing was evaluated. Fixation materials were left in place. Fracture healing occurred with a rostral part malocclusion. The purpose of this study was to give clinical information about mandibular fractures and treatment of these fractures in a horse.

The first report of an unusual anal atresia with growth of ectodermal organs (wool and skin) in the shape of the intestine inside the body is provided here. During reconstructive surgery, a rectum-like structure was noted, in which wool strands grew densely. A hypothetical mechanism by which this structure formed is presented on the basis of local alterations in fetal tissue proliferation and rate of development.

In this report, congenital lymphoma of B-cell lineage in a Brown Swiss calf is described. A large mass was seen on the head of the calf at birth. At necropsy, multiple masses were found on the skin and internal organs. A histopathological examination showed atypical lymphoid cells separated by connective tissue. None of the tumor cells showed a positive reaction to CD3, but the cells were immunopositive for CD79\alphacy. A CD45+ reaction confirmed a hematopoietic origin of the neoplasm.
