Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of calcium-dependent and zinc-dependent endopeptidases, which excrete from many cell types. These enzymes can hydrolyze extracellular matrix proteins. The most important inhibitor of MMPs is tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The imbalance between MMPs and TIMPs causes pathological condition in human and animals. This review focuses on structural, role and several reports of MMPs in horse, dog, cat, fish and avian. Over production of MMPs is associated with tissue destruction and erosion of cartilage in equine osteoarthritis, especially MMP-2 and MMP-9. Early Selection According To Repeatability Of Body Measurements Of Turkish Arabian Foals, Süleyman Çilek

In this study, body measurements of Turkish Arabian foals at different ages was obtained from Anadolustate farm in Turkey which included body length, cannon bone circumference, heart girth and withers heightmeasurements. Effects of sex, birth month, birth year and age of foal at different growth periods on withers height,body length, heart girth and cannon bone circumference were significant (p<0.05). Effects of environmental factors onall body measurements were standardized additively. Using intra-class correlation method, repeatability was 0.55 forwither height, 0.47 for heart girth, 0.26 for cannon bone circumference for forelimb and 0.31 for body length.According to moderate level results of repeatability for especially heart girth and wither height measurements,selection of Turkish Arabian foals may be conducted at an early age according to body measurements at 6 months ofage.

Genetic Associations Between Stillbirth, Total Number Of Piglets Born And Gestation Length In A Commercial Pig Farm, Nalinee Imboonta, Prapatsara Kuhaaudomlarp

Data of purebred Landrace, Large White and their crossbreds taken from a commercial swine farm locatedin the north-eastern part of Thailand were used to evaluate the genetic associations of stillbirth with the total numberof piglets born and gestation length. The analyses were base on 28,275 litters born from 2002 to 2006. Analysis wascarried out with a multivariate animal model using average information REML procedures. Heritability estimates forstillbirth, the total number of piglets born and gestation length were 0.03±0.01, 0.03±0.01 and 0.16±0.01, respectively.The genetic correlation between the total number of piglets born and stillbirth was positive. The purpose of this study is to detect Babesia canis by using 18S rDNA amplification in order to confirm thepresence of the agents and to characterize molecularly the Thai B. canis. Three sets of primers, a Babesia canis-specificprimer (BcSP), Piroplasm-specific primer (PSP) and Babesia species-specific primer (BsSP), were tested for sensitivity.The results showed that BcSP and PSP were 50 times more sensitive than BsSP. Both BcSP and PSP were specificenough to detect this parasite in asymptomatic dogs. This study aimed to determine seasonal dengue infection rates in Ae. aegypti mosquitoes and dengueinfection in suspected patients in 4 central provinces of Thailand. Ae. aegypti mosquitoes collected during threeseasons and blood specimens taken from patients with suspected dengue were detected and serotyped for dengueviruses using RT-PCR. The biting behavior of Ae. aegypti females was studied by 24-hour mosquitoes collection once amonth using human bait for determination of seasonal biting rate. The present study investigated the influence of four different commercial semen extenders used during theholding time and the use of seminal plasma as a thawing medium on the frozen-thawed (FT) boar semen quality.Sperm-rich fractions were collected from 11 boars and were divided into four groups according to the type of semenextender used during the holding time (A, B, C and D). The intracellular concentration of glutamine is very high where it plays a central role as a ready source ofnitrogen, carbon and energy in various metabolic processes. The purpose of the present study was to investigate theinfluence of intracellular glutamine status on amino acid uptake activity in placental choriocarcinoma (BeWo) cells,analogous to normal placental trophoblasts. Intracellular glutamine was depleted by culturing the cells in regularmedium without glutamine and by treating with 2 mM methionine sulfoximine (MSX), an inhibitor of glutaminesynthetase, for 16 hours. Prevalence Of Gastrointestinal Parasites In Yellow Cattle Between Taiwan And Its Offshore Islands, Kwong-Chung Tung, Chiu-Chen Huang, Chien-Hung Pan, Cheng-Hsiung Yang, Cheng-Hung Lai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A total of 310 fecal samples of yellow cattle were collected in Taiwan and its offshore islands Penghu andKinmen for gastrointestinal parasite examination using coprological techniques. The overall prevalence was 73.2%.The infection rates of protozoa, nematodes, trematodes, and cestodes were 57.7%, 37.7%, 17.1%, and 0.6%,respectively. Among all parasites, Cryptosporidium spp. (41.6%) were the most predominant, followed by strongyles(36.1%) and Eimeria spp. (11.9%). There were significant differences in the prevalence of protozoa and nematodesbetween different distributional area groups. The present study demonstrates that gastrointestinal parasiticinfections, particularly protozoan infections, occur frequently in yellow cattle in Taiwan and its offshore islands. Although neosporosis has long been detected in several wildlife species from different parts of the world,until now there has been no report of Neospora caninum infection in elephants in any country of the world. Serumsamples of 115 captive elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) from the westernmost province of Kanchanaburi, Thailandwere investigated for antibodies to N. caninum and Toxoplasma gondii. Antibodies of N. caninum were detected by thecompetitive ELISA (cELISA) test and T.gondii by the Latex agglutination (LAT) test. The prevalence of T. gondiiantibodies was 13.04% (15/115), while anti-N. caninum was 33.04% (38/115). Only 7/115 (6.09%) were positive forboth parasites. Our study …

Raccoons are specifically targeted for the control of rabies in the United States, primarily due to the 100% fatality rate in humans and animals. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus is a significant swine pathogen which exhibits considerable sequence diversity. In an attempt to identify highly conserved T-cell epitopes contained in proteins of this virus, we examined heptadecamer peptides spanning the sequence of the PRRSV nonstructural proteins 9, 10 and 11, all of them are highly conserved, for their ability to elicit a recall proliferative and interferon-gamma response in peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from pigs immunized against the type-II PRRSV strain FL-12. Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 (STEC O157) is one of the leading causes of hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. Reducing the prevalence of STEC O157 in live cattle may reduce ground beef prevalence and subsequent human illness. Linoleic acid isomerase (LAI) is the enzyme that converts linoleic acid to conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) which appear to be capable of lowering cancer risk and enhancing immunity. There is an interest in developing commercial processes for the production of single isomers of CLA by biotransformation of LA using microbial cells and enzymes. However, the evaluation of these strains suggest that growth and LA isomerase production levels by these anaerobes are insufficient to support economic commercial production of single CLA isomers. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is one of the most devastating and costly diseases to the swine industry worldwide. Overall, the adaptive immune response to PRRS virus (PRRSV) is weak, which results in delayed elimination of virus from the host and inferior vaccine protection. PRRSV has been shown to induce a meager alpha interferon (IFN-α) response, and we hypothesized that elevated IFN-α levels early in infection would shorten the induction time and increase elements of the adaptive immune response. BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to evaluate the gene expression of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, IL-1 receptor antagonist [ra] and serum amyloid A (SAA) in endometrial tissue and circulating leukocytes in response to uterine inoculation of 105 colony forming units (CFU) Escherichia coli in mares. Before inoculation, mares were classified as resistant or susceptible to persistent endometritis based on their uterine inflammatory response to infusion of 109 killed spermatozoa and histological assessment of the endometrial quality.
