The aim of this study was to compare effects of inorganic sulfate versus chelated forms of supplemental Cu, Mn, and Zn on milk production, plasma and milk mineral concentrations, neutrophil activity, and antibody titer response to a model vaccination. Holstein cows (n = 25) were assigned in 2 cohorts based on calving date to a 12-wk randomized complete block design study. The first cohort consisted of 17 cows that had greater days in milk (DIM; mean of 77 DIM at the start of the trial) than the second cohort of 8 cows (32 DIM at the start of the trial). …

Glutaredoxin 2 (Grx2), a thiol-regulating enzyme of oxidoreductase family and a mitochondrial isozyme of glutaredoxin 1, was discovered 11 years ago in our laboratory. Grx2 is present in the lens where it shows dethiolase, peroxidase, and ascorbate recycling activities. Recently, Grx2 has also been identified to protect the mitochondrial electron transport system with anti-apoptotic function. Since other eye tissues besides the lens are rich in mitochondria and are very sensitive to oxidative stress, we speculate the presence of Grx2 therein as an important redox regulator. The canonical flow of visual signals proceeds from outer to inner retina (photoreceptors→bipolar cells→ganglion cells). However, melanopsin-expressing ganglion cells are photosensitive and functional sustained light signaling to retinal dopaminergic interneurons persists in the absence of rods and cones. Here we show that the sustained-type light response of retinal dopamine neurons requires melanopsin and that the response is mediated by AMPA-type glutamate receptors, defining a retrograde retinal visual signaling pathway that fully reverses the usual flow of light signals in retinal circuits.

BACKGROUND: Equine rhinitis viruses A and B (ERAV and ERBV) are common equine respiratory viruses belonging to the family Picornaviridae. Sero-surveillance studies have shown that these two viral infections are prevalent in many countries. Currently, the diagnosis of ERAV and ERBV infections in horses is mainly based on virus isolation (VI). However, the sensitivity of VI testing varies between laboratories due to inefficient viral growth in cell culture and lack of cytopathic effect. The stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, is a cosmopolitan pest of livestock, wild animals, pets, and humans. It is a primary pest of cattle in the United States, estimated to cause more than $1 billion in economic losses annually. It also causes dissension at the rural-urban interface and is a problem in recreation areas such as Florida beaches and the Great Lakes. Due to its pestiferous nature and painful bite, methods to control stable flies have been investigated for over a century. This cross-sectional study was introduced to determine the risk factors of subclinical mastitis in dairy farms. Sixteen small holder farms and 285 milking cows in Khon Kaen province were selected for the study. The mastitis investigation, feeding information and clinical inspection were applied in the farm visits. Milk samples from each quarter with a CMT score of 3 and bulk milk were collected for bacterial identification and somatic cell counts. The prevalence of subclinical mastitis and associated factors were analyzed. Results found that the prevalence of subclinical mastitis was 36.14%. Warm-water streptococcosis outbreaks in Thai cultured tilapia are caused by Streptococcus iniae and S.agalactiae. However, distinguishing between these two species of streptococcus are very difficult due to their similarmicrobiological appearance and clinical signs of infected fish. In this study, we proposed a new duplex-PCR basedmethod for simultaneous detection of these pathogens. The duplex-PCR amplified partial lctO and 16s rRNA gene ofS. iniae and S. agalactiae at 870 bp and 220 bp, respectively. The objective of this study was to evaluatethe safety of ethanolic extract of A. elliptica fruit in animal models by oral administration. A seroepidemiological survey was carried out to investigate seroprevalence of Neospora caninum in swamp buffaloes from five provinces in north-eastern Thailand, and to compare infection status in swamp buffaloes and beef cattle at one area of Thailand. A single serum sample was collected from each of 532 swamp buffaloes and 78 beef cattle during January and July 2009. Antibodies against N. caninum were analyzed by a commercial ELISA test. Chisquare tests were used to compare the seroprevalence between species, gender and age groups in Khon Kaen. Plasmid Profiles Of Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia Coli From Clinically Healthy Swine, Khin Khin Lay, Nisit Chansong, Rungtip Chuanchuen

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A total of 145 Escherichia coli isolates originated from clinically-healthy pigs were analyzed for plasmidprofiles. All but one isolate (n=144) carried one to nine plasmids with size ranging from 0.7-16.2 Mda. Fifty-sixplasmid profiles were defined based on sizes and numbers of plasmids in each strain, of which the most commonpatterns were 15.8, 4, 3.3, 1.7, 1.3 Mda and 16.2, 15.8, 4, 3.3, 2.3, 1.7, 1.3, 1, 0.7 Mda. The results indicate widedistribution of plasmids among the commensal E. coli isolates originated from clinically-healthy pigs.

The present study was performed to find the therapeutic effects of 2 mg/kg prednisolone orally fed twice a day in cats with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). Six IMHA positive cats were diagnosed with Coomb’s test. Mean age of IMHA cats was 4.4 years old. They were considered as having secondary IMHA. The mortality rate of IMHA cats received prednisolone treatment was 33.3%. Complete blood count and blood chemistry values were all within the normal limit.
