The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The present study aims to investigate a suitable L-cysteine level to be added the lactose-egg yolk (LEY) extender to improve the quality of boar semen after freezing-thawing using Annexin-V and propidium iodide (PI) assay detected with flow cytometer. Ejaculates from twelve boars were processed in the LEY extender and added with 0, 5, 10 and 15 mM of L-cysteine. Semen suspensions were cryopreserved with a controlled-rate freezer and thawed for examination. The surface of sperm plasma membrane was explored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while sperm membrane integrity was performed by Annexin-V/PI assay. Of all treatments, the damaged spermatozoa in …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
This study was done to evaluate the efficiency of ultrasound-guided transvaginal follicular aspiration without hormonal pre-stimulation for collecting the oocytes of indigenous Thai beef cattle (Bos indicus), and to assess the vitrification method for their preservation. All animals between 2.5-12 years were categorized according to age (i.e. heifer, young cow, and old cow). A medium-sized follicle (φ 3-8 mm.) had the greatest distribution among the various size classes (p≤ 0.05), and the mean of oocytes collected from each group was not significantly different. Postthawed survival was 60.78, 53.70 and 57.50%, with a cleavage rate of 38.71, 37.93 and 39.13%, and …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The purpose of this study was to survey Lawsonia intracellularis in dogs in Thailand by using Polymerase chain reaction technique. Lawsonia intracellularis is obligatory intracellular bacterium which causes proliferative enteropathy in animals, including dog. Fecal samples from 48 dogs were collected from Bangkok, Pathumthani and Nakhon Ratchasima and tested for L. intracellularis by PCR technique. The dogs were classified into two groups according to the presence or absence of diarrhea. In the group of dogs with diarrhea (n= 11), 6 dogs were positive (54.4%) and in the group without signs of diarrhea (n= 37), 15 dogs were positive (40.5%). The …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
A study on the histology of the extrahepatic bile ducts was conducted in eight female and eight male twentyweek- old healthy Iranian partridges (Alectoris chukar). The extrahepatic bile ducts possessed tunica mucosa, muscularis and serosa. The tunica mucosa of the extrahepatic bile ducts was lined by non ciliated simple columnar epithelium. The apical cytoplasm of epithelial cells was covered by a continuous striated border of microvilli. The goblet cells were absent in epithelium. Tunica mucosa formed some simple folds lining with tall columnar epithelium. The lamina muscularis mucosa was absent. All epithelial cells of the bile ducts reacted with acid …

Mycoplasma haemocanis is a hemotrophic mycoplasma (hemoplasma), blood pathogen that may cause acute disease in immunosuppressed or splenectomized dogs. The genome of the strain Illinois, isolated from blood of a naturally infected dog, has been entirely sequenced and annotated to gain a better understanding of the biology of M. haemocanis. Its single circular chromosome has 919 992 bp and a low G + C content (35%), representing a typical mycoplasmal genome. A gene-by-gene comparison against its feline counterpart, M. haemofelis, reveals a very similar composition and architecture with most of the genes having conserved synteny extending over their entire chromosomes …

The aim of this study was to describe cases of epistaxis associated with post-race Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) in Thoroughbred horses at the Hippodrome "La Rinconada", Caracas, Venezuela, through a clinic pathological study. We studied a total of 29 cases of epistaxis post-race in Thoroughbred horses at the Hippodrome La Rinconada, Caracas, Venezuela, which is 2,950 meters above sea level. The study included horses between the ages of 2-5 years, 16 stallions and 13 mares, weighing between 450-510 kg. They underwent a clinical examination, although horses presenting with epistaxis were in an emergency situation. Samples of blood and urine …

Abstract Background: Concurrent infection with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is known as one of the major causes for porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). Dual infection with PCV2 and PRRSV is consistently to have more severe clinical presentations and pulmonary lesions than infection with PCV2 alone or PRRSV alone. However, it is not known if dual infections with PCV2 and PRRSV in different infection order may lead to different clinical symptoms in the host. To mimic the possible field conditions, swine alveolar macrophages (AMs) were inoculated with PCV2 and PRRSV in vitro …

PURPOSE. To study the effect of age on the morphologic and biochemical alterations induced by in vivo exposure of ultraviolet radiation (UV).
METHODS. Young and old C57BL/6 mice were exposed to broadband UVBþUVA and euthanized after 2 days. Another batch of UV-exposed young mice was monitored for changes after 1, 2, 4, and 8 days. Age-matched nonexposed mice served as controls. Lens changes were documented in vivo by slit-lamp biomicroscopy and dark field microscopy photographs ex vivo. Lens homogenates were analyzed for glutathione (GSH) level, and the activities of thioredoxin (Trx), thioltransferase (TTase), and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PD). Glutathionylated lens proteins …

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a fundamental role in the immune system by detecting pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) to sense host infection. Ethanol at doses relevant for humans inhibits the pathogen induced cytokine response mediated through TLRs. The current study was designed to investigate the mechanisms of this effect by determining whether ethanol inhibits TLR3 and TLR4 mediated TNF-? secretion through inhibition of transcription factor activation or post-transcriptional effects. In NF-?B reporter mice, activation of NF-?B in vivo by LPS was inhibited by ethanol (LPS alone yielded 170,000?35,300 arbitrary units of light emission; LPS plus ethanol yielded 56,120?16880, p = …

The domestic dog offers a unique opportunity to study complex disorders similar to those seen in humans, but within the context of the much simpler genetic backgrounds of pure breeds, which represent closed populations. We performed a whole-genome search for genetic risk factors of adult-onset deafness in the Border Collie, a breed of herding dog that relies on acute hearing to perceive and respond to commands while working. Adult-onset deafness in Border Collies typically begins in early adulthood and is similar to age-related hearing loss in humans. This earlier onset has particular impact on the utility of working Border Collies …

Canine Urinary Incontinence Post-Neutering: A Review Of Associated Factors, Pathophysiology And Treatment Options, Suppawiwat Ponglowhapan, Muhammad Khalid, David Church
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Canine urinary incontinence is commonly encountered in small animal veterinary practice with highprevalence in spayed female dogs. The diagnosis of neutering-induced urinary incontinence is usually based onclinical signs, history and elimination of other possible diagnoses. The proposed predispositions to incontinence thatfollows neutering including gender, breed, body weight, obesity, tail docking, spaying technique (ovariectomy andovariohysterectomy) and morphology of the LUT, e.g. the position of neck of the bladder and urethral length, have allbeen investigated. At present, the exact underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. However, it is widelyagreed that the condition is multi-factorial and hormone-associated. The role of gonadotrophin LH and …
