Purpose Rooted in a social exchange lens, this study aimed to explore the interactions between the factors influencing stay at work after a period of disability due to an occupational injury. Methods Based on a descriptive interpretative research design, interviews with 15 participants (i.e., representatives of workers, workplaces, insurers, and the health care system) were conducted to gather their perspectives about stay at work. Qualitative data was analyzed through thematic analysis. Results Ten different factors interacting together and influencing stay at work were identified. These factors prevail either during stay at work or previously. They are either related to the …

Études primaires
Conventional electromyography-driven (EMG) musculoskeletal models are calibrated during maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) tasks, but individuals with low back pain cannot perform unbiased MVCs. To address this issue, EMG-driven models can be calibrated in submaximal tasks. However, the effects of maximal (when data points include the maximum contraction) and submaximal calibration techniques on model outputs (e.g., muscle forces, spinal loads) remain yet unknown. We calibrated a subject-specific EMG-driven model, using maximal/submaximal isometric contractions, and simulated different independent tasks. Both approaches satisfactorily predicted external moments (Pearson’s correlation ∼ 0.75; relative error = 44%), and removing calibration tasks under axial torques markedly improved …

Background: The most noticeable part of human body is face. The obvious boundaries on the skin known as Pigmentary Demarcation Lines (PDL) found over face and have clear borders of abrupt transition between more hyper-pigmented skin and areas of normal skin pigmentation due to differences in melanocyte distribution that may be influenced by multiple factors. Facial pigmentary demarcation lines (PDL) directly reflect on patient’s physical appearance and self-image as they may contribute to dysmorphism and even central to depressive illness in susceptible individuals posing cosmetic concern for the patient and a challenge for dermatologist. Therefore, it is important for early …

Characterization Of Aerosols Produced By Common Orthodontic Procedures, Anna R. Schoettger
Theses & Dissertations
Introduction: Aerosols can harbor active viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, making it vital that clinical protocols implemented in the orthodontic office be based on which procedures produce aerosols. Research shows that various procedures in the field of orthodontics generate aerosols, however, there is a lack of consensus as to which procedures should be deemed aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs). The current study aimed to better understand aerosol production of various orthodontic procedures. Methods: Orthodontic procedures were performed in a closed-room dental operatory on acrylic teeth mounted onto a dental manikin. Procedures performed included: debonding, bonding, and repositioning of one bracket. Variations introduced included: high-speed …

Developing And Piloting An E-Learning Module On Respiratory Protection, Emily Girard
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Respiratory diseases are one of the most common causes of occupational illnesses in the United States. Many occupations use personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of respirators to protect against respiratory hazards when other control methods are not effective. However, some workers may not have had adequate training on their use. An e-learning module was developed to provide information about respirators and their use in agriculture. The interactions of matching, sorting, and review questions require the user to be an active participant with the goal of reinforcing the information. It was hypothesized the average summative assessment score would increase …

Occupational Injuries Associated With Workplace Violence In An Academic Medical Center, Rebecca J. Bonacci
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Violence is a major source of workplace injury in the medical profession. Peer reviewed literature is lacking for workers that have injuries through violence from clients who have intellectual disabilities. Literature for hospital security is also lacking. In this study of workplace violence, we compared injuries among the occupational groups at an academic medical center from 2017-2020. We hypothesized that violence will be similar across the years. Occupational injury and illness data was obtained from an academic medical center. The number of violence cases was divided by the total number of injury cases and reported as a percentage. We found …

Fatigue in hospital nurses can endanger the safety of both the nurse and the patient. One of the factors that can cause fatigue in hospital nurses is the physical environmental, such as lighting, noise, and work climate. The purpose of this study is to analyze the physical work environment factors (lighting, noise, and work climate) associated with work fatigue in hospital nurses. This is a systematic literature review on studies that discuss physical work environment factors related to work fatigue in hospital nurses published in international journals and local journals that can be accessed through the UI Library, especially those …

The laboratory is an experimentation or testing workplace that requires careful behavior in using equipment and material. One of the types of chemicals in the laboratory is an organic solvent as a solvent for other chemicals. The potential risk of breast cancer in female laboratory workers in this cohort study is exposure to organic solvents. Organic solvents that are often used in the laboratory are benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). Given workplace exposure to the chemicals benzene, toluene, and xylene, as well as the health hazards posed by these chemicals, a health risk assessment by inhalation using the Singapore SQRA …

Background: Not all of awkward postures that exist in the industry should be eliminated. Due to the fact, awkward posture can not be separated from daily work activities. Any movement that makes the body angle away from the normal position, can be said to be an awkward posture. Misconceptions related to the concept of awkward posture are followed by the fact that the assessment’s concepts of the observation method that are often used to assess awkward postures (REBA, RULA, and OWAS) is not accordance with the theory it should be. That condition can reduce the effectiveness of controlling musculoskeletal system …

Mental fatigue among coal mining operators was related to driving activities that require high concentration. This study aimed to determine factors that contributed to mental fatigue among coal mine operators in Indonesia, specifically in Kalimantan and Sumatra, after a one-year COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 480 operators from two companies and seven sites. A self-administrated questionnaire in the Google Form was used to measure mental fatigue, the non-work-related factors (age, education, marital status, residence, and stress level), and work-related factors (working periods, shift pattern, type of shift, and work area in mining). The data analyzed using Chi-square …

The lactational amenorrhea method (LAM) is a natural contraceptive that is highly effective after the three essential criteria are fulfilled. However, there is a significantly low adoption resulting from poor knowledge and correct practices. This study aimed to determine the correlation between knowledge and behavior of breastfeeding mothers on breastfeeding as a natural contraceptive. This was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design involving 89 breastfeeding mothers and was performed from January to March 2018. Furthermore, data were collected using a questionnaire, and the results showed knowledge of breastfeeding mothers to be good (59.6%) and not good (51.7%). However, …

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a major global public health problem. People with HIV/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are more susceptible to opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis (TB). Therefore, families and community leaders need to help monitor people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). This study aimed to analyze an integrated family approach and local support model to detect TB cases in PLWHA. This study used a case-control study in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara Province, in July 2020. The sample comprised 100 people (50 PLWHA with TB case and 50 controls) using total sampling and random sampling, respectively. The variables …
