Household Food Security, Lifestyle Factors, And Glycemic Control Among Youth And Young Adults With Diabetes, Lauren A. Reid 2021 University of South Carolina

Household Food Security, Lifestyle Factors, And Glycemic Control Among Youth And Young Adults With Diabetes, Lauren A. Reid

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the associations between household food insecurity (HFI) and glycemic control, physical activity, and diet quality in youth and young adults (YYA) with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Among older adults, HFI has been shown to complicate diabetes management due to the essential role of diet in diabetes management and the financial stress associated with HFI. Although HFI is more prevalent among YYA with diabetes than the general population, there are only a handful of studies that have focused on this population and, studies that include YYA with T2D …

Dysbiosis-Related Medications And The Association With Cognitive Decline, Cognitive Impairment, And Dementia, Nicholas Victor Resciniti 2021 University of South Carolina

Dysbiosis-Related Medications And The Association With Cognitive Decline, Cognitive Impairment, And Dementia, Nicholas Victor Resciniti

Theses and Dissertations

The main objectives of this dissertation were to quantitatively assess whether there is an association between medications (e.g., antibiotics, PPIs, antipsychotics) and cognitive performance over time, conduct a causal mediation analysis to evaluate the role of inflammation (C-reactive protein) in the association between medications and subsequent cognitive decline, and examine if dysbiosis-related medications (DRM) are associated with a greater risk of dementia for participants that were cognitively normal and had MCI at baseline.

The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) was used to conduct a secondary data analysis that used longitudinal data from 2004 to 2016. The HRS is an ongoing, …

Diabetes, Anti-Diabetic Medication Use, And The Risk Of Ovarian Cancer, Chantaezia Joseph 2021 University of South Carolina

Diabetes, Anti-Diabetic Medication Use, And The Risk Of Ovarian Cancer, Chantaezia Joseph

Theses and Dissertations

Background- Although ovarian cancer is a rare disease, it is the 5th leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the United States. Diabetes is a serious chronic disease that plagues over 436 million adults worldwide and was ranked 7th in causes of death in the US in 2017. Epidemiologic evidence suggests that diabetes may lead to an increased risk of ovarian cancer due to shared risk factors such as sedentary behaviors, smoking and poor diet or through biological mechanisms related to hyperglycemia and obesity, but the epidemiologic evidence yields mixed results. Certain anti-diabetic medications may increase the risk …

Intersection Of Maternal Disability Status, Prescription Opioid Use Before And During Pregnancy, And Adverse Birth Outcomes, Chelsea Lynes Richard 2021 University of South Carolina

Intersection Of Maternal Disability Status, Prescription Opioid Use Before And During Pregnancy, And Adverse Birth Outcomes, Chelsea Lynes Richard

Theses and Dissertations

Nationally, individuals with disability, like those with chronic health conditions, have higher rates of opioid use and misuse and are prescribed higher dosages than those without disability. Because opioid agonists and antagonists can cross the placenta rapidly, there is biological plausibility that they may have an impact on birth outcomes. Therefore, monitoring prescription opioid use, particularly among pregnant women, is of great public health importance. While evidence for the impact of opioid use on preterm birth and low birthweight are conflicting; findings are consistent that opioid use during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of small for gestational age, …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

OBJECTIVES: We developed COVID-19 Outbreak Simulator (https://ictr.github.io/covid19-outbreak-simulator/) to quantitatively estimate the effectiveness of preventative and interventive measures to prevent and battle COVID-19 outbreaks for specific populations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our simulator simulates the entire course of infection and transmission of the virus among individuals in heterogeneous populations, subject to operations and influences, such as quarantine, testing, social distancing, and community infection. It provides command-line and Jupyter notebook interfaces and a plugin system for user-defined operations.

RESULTS: The simulator provides quantitative estimates for COVID-19 outbreaks in a variety of scenarios and assists the development of public health policies, risk-reduction operations, and …

The move to virtual schooling and other measures to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection dramatically changed the educational experience for grades K-12 populations during the years 2020 and 2021. STEM teaching and learning, and community partnerships focused on STEM education, were not exempt from the changes. Universities and other community partners had to adapt their STEM partnership programming to address new needs and assist students, teachers, families, and schools throughout periods of at-home learning and the re-reintroduction of in-person classes. Some of the changes included developing new programs, providing health-related guidance to school leaders, and converting student-focused programs to …

The Detrimental Association Between Fear Of Falling And Motor Performance In Older Cancer Patients With Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy, Gu Eon Kang, Tamiko K Murphy, Mark E Kunik, Hoda J Badr, Biruh T Workeneh, Sarvari V Yellapragada, Yvonne H Sada, Bijan Najafi 2021 The Texas Medical Center Library

The Detrimental Association Between Fear Of Falling And Motor Performance In Older Cancer Patients With Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy, Gu Eon Kang, Tamiko K Murphy, Mark E Kunik, Hoda J Badr, Biruh T Workeneh, Sarvari V Yellapragada, Yvonne H Sada, Bijan Najafi

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) are at increased risk of falls and developing fear of falling (FoF). Although FoF may continue to impair motor performance and increase the risk of falling even further, this association remains unexplored in CIPN.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Does high FoF in patients with CIPN further deteriorate motor performance beyond the impairment from CIPN-related sensory deficits?

METHODS: In this secondary analysis of data collected from two clinical trials, gait parameters during habitual walking condition and postural sway parameters during 30-second quiet standing (eye-open and eyes-closed) were compared among older participants (≥ 65 years) with …

Background. Fuel can emit lead heavy metal into the air and will fall to the ground and accumulate in the soil or water. Soil has the ability to retain most of the harmful elements it contains in a long time. Planting water spinach on the edge of a road that is heavily traversed by vehicles will affect lead levels in water spinach due to the absorption of lead from the environment. This study aims to estimate the level of health risk of water spinach farmers due to ingestion of lead in water spinach grown in Sukapura District, North Jakarta. Methods. …
