Anticancer Activity Of Cepharanthine On Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells, Yaowaluck Detpichai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cepharanthine (CEP) is a biscoclaurine alkaloid, isolated from the roots of Stephania cepharanthine Hayata that possesses potent anticancer properties against several types of cancer such as hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal cancer, leukemia and ovarian cancer. However, there is still limited information regarding to its effects on non-small cell lung cancer cells. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were to determine the cytotoxicity of CEP and its underlying mechanisms in non-small cell lung cancer cells expressing wild-type p53 and EGFR (A549) and non-small cell lung cancer cells expressing mutant p53 and EGFR (H1975). The results indicated that CEP significantly inhibited the …

Profiling Transcription And Retrotransposition Of Mouse L1 Subfamilies, Lingqi Kong 2020 South Dakota State University

Profiling Transcription And Retrotransposition Of Mouse L1 Subfamilies, Lingqi Kong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Transposable elements, also called jumping genes, comprise almost 45% of the human genome. In contrast, only 1% of the human genome is protein-coding sequences. The function and advantages of maintaining such massive copies of transposable elements in the human genome are still unclear. Long interspersed element 1 (L1), the most substantial group and the only active autonomous transposable element in the human genome, has revealed its unique roles in many diseases. The insertional mutagenesis induced by L1 retrotransposition events could threaten human genomic stability and generate unexpected mutations. L1 overexpression has been documented in both somatic and germline cells and, …

Ndrg1 And Myelin-Related Disease: Alcoholism And Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy, Guy Harris 2020 Virginia Commonwealth University

Ndrg1 And Myelin-Related Disease: Alcoholism And Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy, Guy Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a prevalent neuropsychiatric disease with profound health, social, and economic consequences. With an estimated 50% heritability, identifying genes that engender risk and contribute to the underlying neurobiological mechanisms represents an important first step in developing effective treatments. Gene expression studies are an important source of candidate genes for studying AUD, providing windows into the molecular machinery engaged by the brain in response to ethanol. Our laboratory has implicated N-myc down-regulated gene 1 (Ndrg1) as a potential candidate gene that modulates ethanol-induced changes in myelin-related gene expression and acute sensitivity to ethanol. Analysis of …

Anticholinergic Burden And Risk Of Cognitive Impairment In Older Adults, Syeda Hashimi 2020 Virginia Commonwealth University

Anticholinergic Burden And Risk Of Cognitive Impairment In Older Adults, Syeda Hashimi

Theses and Dissertations

Studies reveal that 10-27% of older adults chronically use anticholinergic medications. Increased cumulative anticholinergic burden scores are associated with increased risks of dementia. The mechanisms by which anticholinergic drugs negatively impact cognition remain elusive. However, researchers speculate that the drug’s impairment of cholinergic neurons promotes neuroinflammation.

We hypothesize that drugs with anticholinergic properties will induce inflammation in the brain. MCP1 and IL 6 are chemokines that contribute to neuroinflammation. We investigated the influence of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) on the production of MCP1 and IL-6 in Normal Human Astrocytes and Paroxetine on the production of MCP1 in Normal Human Astrocytes and Normal …

Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory condition that results in increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory mediators. In addition to oral disease and tooth loss, it also causes low-grade systemic inflammation that contributes to development of systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease, pre-term birth, diabetes and cancer. Chronic inflammation is associated with epigenetic change, and it has been suggested that such changes can alter cell phenotypes in ways that contribute to both ongoing inflammation and development of associated pathologies. Here we show that exposure of human gingival fibroblasts to IL-1β increases expression of maintenance methyltransferase DNMT1 but decreases expression of …

Reflections On The Effects Of Federalism On Opioid Policy, Matthew B. Lawrence

Faculty Articles

One thing we have seen today that we talk about in health law all the time is how the policy, the laws and institutions up at the 10,000 foot level, can so dramatically influence the personal, people’s lived experiences. Our speakers today have done a really great job of drawing out abstract institutional questions and also showing us how those questions have influenced the lives of real people in often tragic ways. Another thing we have seen that we talk about in administrative law all the time is the importance of expertise, especially given how hard it is to trace …
