Magnification Loupes In U.S. Entry-Level Dental Hygiene Programs - Occupational Health And Safety, Leslie Mchaney Congdon, Susan Lynn Tolle, Michele Darby

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine policies and practices regarding magnification loupes among faculty and students in accredited dental hygiene programs as measured by a 31 item, self-designed questionnaire. In addition, the study compared policies among dental hygiene programs in 2 year versus 4 year programs in terms of requirements for the use of magnification loupes.

Methods: After institutional review board approval, a 31 item self-designed questionnaire was emailed via Survey Monkey to 303 entry-level dental hygiene programs. An overall response rate of 75% was obtained. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square test of independence. …

Introduction: Mitogen Activating Protein (MAPK) kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1) has been shown to be a key negative regulator of the MAP kinase pathways of the innate immune system. The impact of MKP-1 in an endodontic model has yet to be studied. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the role of MKP-1 in a bacterial-driven model of pathological endodontic bone loss. Methods: Pulps were exposed in both lower 1st molars of 10-week old Dusp-1+1+IMKP-1 +1+ and Dusp-1-1-IMKP-1-1- mice and left open to the oral environment for either 3 or 8 weeks. Introduction: A common adverse effect using thermoplasticized obturators is overextension. A canal preparation allowing for predictable obturation length would be of clinical value. This study compared straight canals instrumented to a size 40 file using a 0.04 standardized taper preparation (STP) and a varied taper preparation (VTP) by evaluating the extension of two thermoplastic obturation systems: RealSeall ™ (RS-l) and Thermafil® Plus (TP). The increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suggests that dental practices will be seeing patients with this diagnosis more frequently. Although patients with ASD have similar dental needs to other patients, the symptoms of the disorder may influence the ability of dental practitioners to provide necessary care. Dental professionals may be unaware of the difficulties with sensory processing common to patients with ASD. However, awareness of sensory processing issues and knowledge of strategies to improve the sensory experience for individuals with ASD may improve dental visits for these patients and allow for enhanced dental care provision.

Methods: This in vitro study was conducted using 80 extracted mature and patent human 1st and 2nd maxillary and mandibular molar teeth with mesiobuccal (MB) roots exhibiting 20°- 45° canal curvature using Schneider's method. Prescription opioid abuse is the fastest-growing drug problem in the United States and has been declared an epidemic by the U.S. White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Immediate release (IR) opioids, especially hydrocodone and oxycodone, are abused or misused most commonly. Dentists are only second to family physicians in the number of IR opioid prescriptions written. Just under ten percent of the population in the United States in 2010 were classified with substance dependence or abuse in 2009. This study poses the following questions: 1. Background: Tristetraprolin (TTP) is a key RNA-binding protein that regulates pro-inflammatory cytokines post-transcriptionally by binding to adenylate-uridylate-rich elements (AREs) within the 3'-untranslated (UTR) region. TTP is encoded by gene zfp-36. During inflammation, the p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway inactivates TTP by phosphorylation to inhibit its ability to shuttle mRNA to cytoplasmic degradation machinery. TTP knockout mice exhibit an inflammatory phenotype of arthritis, myeloid hyperplasia, and cachexia. We hypothesize that TTP directs cytokine expression in inflammatory bone loss during periodontal disease progression. Diagnostic (measurement) error is prevalent in medical research 16;22;29;31;37;43;54;69;79;81;89. Clinical studies in periodontology often produce large amounts of data subject to mea­surement error with potentially complex correlation structures 3;4;14;22;37;89. The periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) are measures often used to as­sess periodontal disease status. PPD and CAL are commonly used as covariates or in the calculation of covariates when investigating outcomes of interest in periodontal studies.
