The purpose of this study is to determine if the service-learning aspect of Marquette’s dental education enhances the dental students’ knowledge of the barriers to access to dental care for underserved populations. The goal of this study is to obtain feedback about service-learning in the MUSoD curriculum and disseminate the findings to others who teach service-learning in dental school curricula. MUSoD students have the opportunity to participate in multiple diverse outreach experiences throughout their four years of Dental School. An in vitro model of bacterial biofilms on rigid gas-permeable contact lenses (RGPLs) was developed to challenge oral epithelial cells. This novel model provided seminal data on oral biofilm-host cell interactions, and with selected bacteria, the biofilms were more effective than their planktonic counterparts at stimulating host cell responses.

Staff meetings in general dental practices represent what is believed to be a key management strategy to build teams and to enhance ef-ficiency and effectiveness. However, very little research has been done regarding staff meetings in dental offices. This study examined staff meetings from the viewpoint of dental hygienists who grow in unique careers in that they work largely independently of the dentist and yet typically within a dental practice while providing patient care and education. Low temperature atmospheric pressure plasma (LT APP) is a novel science being studied as an alternative light source to enhance tooth whitening. The safety and effectiveness of LTAPP has not been established therefore; the purpose of this study was to determine if LTAPP along with H₂O₂ gel would safely and effectively accelerate the tooth whitening process, in terms of lightness and temperature. Perhaps the first comprehensive ethics program in American dental schools was created in 1990 at the University of Kentucky by then dean David Nash. Nash recounts the emergence of his personal and professional interest in ethics using the structure of Daniel Levinson's book The Seasons of a Man's Life. Each season brings tasks of evolving and deepening ethical engagement. Being ethical is important; helping others to be so is special. Nash still teaches the course.

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาโดยการสอนของนักศึกษา ทันตแพทย์ และการใช้สื่อโสตทัศน์ในนักเรียนชั้นประถมศึกษา วัสดุและวิธีการ เด็กนักเรียนจํานวน 160 คน อายุ 10-12 ปี โรงเรียนสาธิตมหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น จังหวัดขอนแก่น โดยสุ่มแบบแบ่งชั้น ตามเพศ ระดับชั้นเรียน และผลการเรียนเฉลี่ย แบ่งเป็น 3 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มที่ไม่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา กลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ การประเมิน ประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันโดยทดสอบความรู้และวัดค่าดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังให้ทันตสุขศึกษา โดยวิเคราะห์ค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างคะแนนความรู้และค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา ในกลุ่มศึกษาทั้ง 3 กลุ่ม ด้วยสถิติทดสอบการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนทางเดียวที่ระดับความเชื่อมั่นร้อยละ 95 ผลการศึกษา ภายหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาพบว่าค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างคะแนนความรู้และค่าเฉลี่ยผลต่างดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ก่อนและหลังได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาในกลุ่มศึกษาทั้ง 3 กลุ่ม มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < 0.01, p < 0.01 ตามลําดับ) โดยพบว่ากลุ่มที่ไม่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษามีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ กับกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษา และพบว่าในระหว่างกลุ่มที่ได้รับทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ สรุป การเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลการแปรงฟันหลังการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาโดยนักศึกษาทันตแพทย์ และโดยสื่อโสตทัศน์ในนักเรียนประถมศึกษาพบว่าไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติทั้งในด้านความรู้และค่าดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์ ดังนั้นอาจจะนําเอาสื่อโสตทัศน์ไปประยุกต์ใช้ในการให้ทันตสุขศึกษาแทนทันตบุคลากรได้ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:187-92)

วัตถุประสงค์ นําเสนอและประเมินผลการทํางานของซอฟต์แวร์คอมพิวเตอร์ที่พัฒนาขึ้นเพื่อใช้ตกแต่งภาพฟัน และทํานายผลที่จะได้รับจากการบูรณะฟันโดยใช้การคํานวณหาขนาดและสัดส่วนของฟันหน้าบนจากจุดอ้างอิงทางกายวิภาคบนใบหน้าของผู้ป่วยเอง วัสดุและวิธีการ ประยุกต์ทฤษฎีที่ใช้ในการคํานวณขนาดฟันตัดกลางบน และทฤษฎีที่ใช้ในการแบ่งส่วนภาพฟันเพื่อใช้ในการแก้ไขปรับปรุงรูปดิจิทัลของฟัน มาเป็นหลักในการเขียนซอฟต์แวร์ในงานทันตกรรม จากนั้นได้ ทดลองใช้งานและประเมินผลในผู้ป่วยกลุ่มหนึ่ง ผลการศึกษา ซอฟต์แวร์สามารถคํานวณขนาดและสัดส่วนของฟันหน้าบนโดยใช้ข้อมูลจากจุดอ้างอิงบนใบหน้าได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพและสามารถสร้างภาพฟันให้มีขนาดและสัดส่วนตามที่คํานวณได้ อีกทั้งยังสามารถทําการ เปลี่ยนแปลงขนาดและสัดส่วนของภาพฟัน รวมทั้งตัดและเคลื่อนที่ภาพฟันจากตําแหน่งเดิมได้ หลังการตกแต่งภาพที่ได้สูญเสียความคมชัดและจําเป็นต้องมีการปรับปรุงคุณภาพของภาพให้ดีขึ้นด้วยกรรมวิธีการประมวลผลภาพ เมื่อทดลองใช้กับกลุ่มตัวอย่างพบว่าซอฟต์แวร์นี้สามารถช่วยในการสื่อสารระหว่างผู้ป่วยและทันตแพทย์ได้ดีขึ้น สรุป ซอฟต์แวร์ที่พัฒนาขึ้นสามารถใช้ในการคํานวณขนาดซี่ฟัน ตกแต่งและปรับปรุงคุณภาพ ภาพจําลองฟันซึ่งมีประโยชน์อย่างมากในการช่วยทันตแพทย์วางแผนการรักษาทางทันตกรรมและช่วยให้เห็นภาพจริงสําหรับใช้ในการสื่อสารกับผู้ป่วยก่อนการรักษาจริง (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:155-68)

การเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลของการใช้แปรงสีฟัน ไฟฟ้ากับแปรงสีฟันธรรมดาต่อการลดการเกิดเหงือกอักเสบและกําจัดคราบจุลินทรีย์ในเด็กอายุ 7-10 ปี, อรอุมา อังวราวงศ์, วรานุช ปิติพัฒน์, มนัสนันท์ ตั้งวงศ์ถาวรกิจ, วิทวัฒน์ ราชครุฑ

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิผลของการใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้ากับแปรงสีฟันธรรมดาในการลดการเกิด เหงือกอักเสบและกําจัดคราบจุลินทรีย์ในช่วงระยะเวลา 3 เดือน วัสดุและวิธีการ ทําการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบกลุ่มควบคุมแบบสุ่มในเด็กนักเรียนประถมศึกษา อายุระหว่าง 7-10 ปี จํานวน 70 คน แบ่งเด็กออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มทดลองและกลุ่มควบคุม กลุ่มละเท่า ๆ กัน โดยการสุ่มแบบแบ่ง ชั้นตามระดับชั้นเรียนและเพศ กําหนดให้เด็กในกลุ่มทดลองใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้าชนิดการเคลื่อนที่แบบสั่นและหมุน และกลุ่มควบคุมใช้แปรงสีฟันธรรมดา วัดดัชนีเหงือกอักเสบของ Lie และ Silness และดัชนีคราบจุลินทรีย์พีเอชพี ของ Podshadley และ Haley ที่เริ่มต้นศึกษาและวัดซ้ําทุกเดือนเป็นระยะเวลา 3 เดือน ทดสอบความแตกต่าง ของค่าเฉลี่ยระหว่างกลุ่มทดลองและกลุ่มควบคุม โดยใช้สถิติการวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนเมื่อมีการวัดที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ 0.05 ผลการศึกษา เมื่อเวลา 3 เดือนพบว่า ค่าเฉลี่ยการลดลงของดัชนีเหงือกอักเสบจากค่าพื้นฐานระหว่างกลุ่ม ทดลองกับกลุ่มควบคุมไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p = 0.19) สําหรับค่าเฉลี่ยการลดลงของดัชนี คราบจุลินทรีย์จากค่าพื้นฐานระหว่างกลุ่มทดลองกับกลุ่มควบคุมพบว่า ไม่มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญ ทางสถิติ (p = 0.73) เช่นเดียวกัน สรุป ประสิทธิผลในการลดการเกิดเหงือกอักเสบและกําจัดคราบจุลินทรีย์ของการใช้แปรงสีฟันไฟฟ้าไม่แตกต่างจากแปรงสีฟันธรรมดาที่ช่วงเวลา 3 เดือน (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:193-202)

ผลของเครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวต่อการติดสีของเรซินคอมโพสิต, สายใจ ตัณฑนุช, บุญเลิศ กู้เกียรติตระกูล, พิมพ์มาดา เกษรักษ์

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาผลของเครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวต่อการติดสีของเรซินคอมโพสิตชนิด นาโนฟิลล์ไฮบริด และไมโครฟิลล์ วัสดุและวิธีการ เตรียมชิ้นตัวอย่างเรซินคอมโพสิตผลิตภัณฑ์ละ 26 ชิ้น ได้แก่ ฟิลเทคแซด 350 และ พรีมีซา ซึ่ง เป็นกลุ่มนาโนฟิลล์ ฟิลเทคแซด 250 และพอยต์ 4 เป็นกลุ่มไฮบริด เคลียร์ฟิลเอสทีและดูราฟิล วีเอสเป็นกลุ่มไมโครฟิลล์ นําชิ้นตัวอย่าง 20 ชิ้นวัดสีด้วยเครื่องวัดค่าสีเพื่อเป็นข้อมูลก่อนการทดสอบ และนําชิ้นตัวอย่างเรซินคอมโพสิตกลุ่มละ 2 ชิ้นตรวจสภาพผิวก่อนทดสอบด้วยกล้องจุลทรรศน์อิเล็กตรอนชนิดสองกราด จากนั้นแช่ชิ้นตัวอย่างที่เหลือ ทั้งหมดจํานวน 24 ชิ้นในเครื่องดื่มชา 5 วินาที สลับกับแช่น้ําลายเทียม 5 วินาที จนครบ 10 รอบ แล้วแช่ชิ้น ตัวอย่างในน้ําลายเทียมจนครบ 24 ชั่วโมง ทําซ้ําใหม่ในลักษณะเดิมจนครบ 5 รอบ วัดสีชิ้นตัวอย่าง 20 ชิ้นที่เคย วัดสีก่อนการแช่และตรวจสภาพผิวหลังทดสอบชิ้นตัวอย่างกลุ่มละ 2 ชิ้น วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยสถิติการทดสอบ ความแปรปรวนสองทางแบบวัดซ้ําและเปรียบเทียบความแตกต่างระหว่างกลุ่มด้วยการทดสอบทูคีย์และการทดสอบแพร่ทีที่ระดับนัยสําคัญ 0.05 ผลการศึกษา เครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวทําให้การติดสีของวัสดุเรซินคอมโพสิตเพิ่มขึ้นแต่ไม่มีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p > 0.05) ยกเว้นเรซินคอมโพสิตฟิลเทคแซด 350 เมื่อแช่ในเครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและดูราฟิลวีเอสเมื่อแช่ในเครื่อง ดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวที่มีการติดสีเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < 0.05) สรุป เครื่องดื่มชาเขียวและชาขาวทําให้วัสดุเรซินคอมโพสิตติดสีเพิ่มขึ้น (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2554;34:169-80)
