Blood Pressure Monitoring Following Individual Carpules Of Anesthetic Utilizing Computer-Controlled Anesthetic Delivery, Kristi M. Soileau, Adam E. Degenova, Qingzhao Yu
School of Dentistry Faculty Publications
To date, no study has evaluated blood pressure following administration of each carpule given for dental procedures using a computerized dental anesthesia system. Blood pressures taken prior to performing invasive periodontal procedures were compared with those readings measured following delivery of each of up to three consecutive carpules of Marcaine or Xylocaine in varying order. Pressure differences were also adjusted for age, sex, race, and whether a prescribed anxiolytic was taken beforehand. Neither systolic nor diastolic blood pressures changed significantly as compared to initial blood pressure readings. However, compared with Whites, Hispanics, and Middle Easterners, Blacks had significantly higher systolic …

This study evaluates the use of nanotubes (NTs) as a matrix for local drug delivery modified by a biodegradable polymeric coating on medical-grade nitinol (NiTi alloy) surfaces. For this purpose, NiTi was anodized within parameters that promote the formation of NTs, ultrasonicated, annealed and impregnated with vancomycin hydrochloride. To improve bioperformance, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) was also deposited on the drug-loaded NTs. The samples were characterized in terms of structure, wettability, drug delivery, corrosion and cytocompatibility. Scanning electron microscopy and water contact angle measurements signify the formation of open-top homogeneous NTs of 600– 700 nm in length and ~30 nm in …

This research aims to evaluate the mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and degradation behavior of scaffolds made of pure hydroxyapatite (HA) and HA‐modified by ZnO for bone tissue engineering applications. HA and ZnO were developed using sol‐gel and precipitation methods respectively. The scaffolds properties were characterized using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic absorption (AA), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The interaction of scaffold with cells was assessed using in vitro cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assays. The obtained results indicate that the HA/ZnO scaffolds possess higher …

Correlation Between Root Surface Strain And Apical Micro-Cracks Produced During Canal Preparation With Thermally Treated Single Or Multi-File Niti Systems, Shehabeldin Mohamed Saber Prof.Dr.
Dentistry
Aim: To determine the apical root surface strain (RSS) generated during shaping with thermally treated file NiTi systems, and its association with the development of apical microcracks. Methodology: Twenty extracted human mandibular molars with severely curved mesial roots having two separate canals were prepared using XP-Endo Shaper files (Group A: XPS in mesio-buccal canals) and Hyflex CM files (Group B: HCM in mesio-lingual canals). Pre-instrumentation images of apical surface of each root were obtained with Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM). Root surface strain (RSS) generated during canal preparation was measured as micro-strain (ìstrain) using electrical strain gauges fixed on apical …

Antibacterial Potential Of Nano-Particulate Intracanal Medications On A Mature E. Faecalis Biofilm In An Ex Vivo Model, Shehabeldin Mohamed Saber Prof.Dr.
Dentistry
Aim: To investigate and compare the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of Chlorhexidine Digluconate functionalized Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles and silver Nanoparticles as intracanal medicaments on a mature E. faecalis biofilm model in root canals of extracted teeth. Methodology: Sixty-eight human maxillary central incisors were mechanically prepared, sterilized, infected with E. faecalis, and then incubated for 28 days under anaerobic conditions to develop a mature E. faecalis biofilm. Eight teeth were used to monitor biofilm formation and maturation over the incubation period with field emission scanning electron microscopy (Fe SEM), while the other 60 teeth were divided into two experimental groups (n=20) in …

The problem of demarcated hypomineralization defects of the permanent first molars (molar-incisor hypomineralization [MIH]) has been an emerging issue for oral health professionals around the globe. Yet, the first set of US-based epidemiologic data on MIH took as long as 2 decades from the time when MIH was first described by Weerheijm and colleagues.1 In response to the June JADA article titled “Prevalence of Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization and Other Enamel Defects and Associated Sociodemographic Determinants in Indiana,” (Tagelsir Ahmed A, Soto-Rojas AE, Dean JA, Eckert GJ, Martinez-Mier EA, JADA. 2020;151[7]: 491-501), we attempt to highlight some of the challenges encountered …

Abstract
Objective
The aim of this study was to introduce a gelatin/bovine serum albumin (BSA) tissue standard, which provides dissolution properties identical to those of biological tissues. Further, the study evaluated whether the utilization of endodontic activating devices led to enhanced phantom dissolution rates.
Materials and Methods
Bovine pulp tissue was obtained to determine a benchmark of tissue dissolution. The surface area and mass of samples were held constant while the ratio of gelatin and BSA were varied, ranging from 7.5% to 10% gelatin and 5% BSA. Each sample was placed in an individual test tube that was filled with …

Just like any other medical research field, the investigation on the use of virtual articulators in dentistry has its ethical implications. Research ethics in oral and medical investigations are critical internationally. The privacy of any participant in the research is a non-negotiable and justice is crucial at all times during the research. We researched on various online research platforms and selected 12 research papers, out of 197, that treat the ethics in research in medical and dental clinical research. We identified 10 ethical issues that needs to be considered while doing clinical research on application of virtual articulators in dentistry. …

This study was conducted on a sample of 8000 individuals interviewed in 97 households in some settlements, such as: Presevo, Zhunica, Rahovica, Miratovc, Raince, Norche and some other villages. The material is sorted by generations in order to detect the type of inheritance in the family. In this paper we followed genetic diseases, inheritance of biomorphological traits, blood groups, and all these qualities are presented with codes. For example, birth order, generation, adjective code, personal code of wife and husband identifying spouses. Based on this data, a computer program is formed to form genetic trees in the family. Therefore, this …

The effect of dentine etching time with H 3 PO 4 37% (20 and 60 sec) and composite polymerization duration (60 and 180 sec) on the shear bond strengths to dentin was evaluated in vitro. Dentine was treated with H 3 PO 4 37% in duration of 20 and 60 sec, before (Syntac ® ) was applied. The composite was polymerized for 60 and 180 sec. Data were analyzed with Anova and Tuckey test. Mean values for the first group (etching 20 sec / polymerization 60 sec) were 63.8 ± 3.7 N, for the second group (E 60 sec / …

Aim: The study was intended to evaluate the efficacy of piezotome versus periotome extractions of non-re- storable endodontically treated teeth in relation to prevention of marginal bone loss, operating time of the procedure, and postoperative sequalae. Methods: Forty-two patients with age range of 30–55 years requiring extraction of maxillary single rooted teeth that failed endodontically were randomly divided into two equal groups, a piezotome group and a periotome group. Clinical assessment was performed through measuring the marginal bone loss, time taken for extraction, postoperative pain and any complications related to the extraction procedure. The data was recorded then analyzed using …
