Modified Tunnel Technique For Management Of Gingival Recession In Esthetic Zone Using Acellular Dermal Matrix Versus Connective Tissue Graft, Rania Fahmy, Maha R. Taalab

Future Dental Journal

Gingival recession often results in major aesthetic problems. Further complains of increased root surface sen- sitivity and root caries could also be encountered. Numerous techniques have been described for the manage- ment of recession. The development of the tunnel technique represents an important esthetic advancement in managing recession defects. This study was performed to compare between the use of Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) and connective tissue graft (CTG) under a modified tunnel technique for management of gingival re- cession in the esthetic zone. Sixteen Miller class I and II recession defects were equally divided for treatment with the two donor …

Objective: This study focused on documenting characteristics of the gingival transcriptome during various stages of periodontitis targeting genes associated with apoptotic and autophagic pathways and changes that specifically associate with features of the oral microbiome.

Methods: Macaca mulatta (n = 18; 12–23 years) were examined at baseline and 0.5, 1, and 3 months of disease progression, as well as 5 months with clinical disease resolution. 16S sequencing and microarray analyses examined changes in the microbiome and gingival transcriptome, respectively, at each time point from every animal.

Results: Specific patterns of apoptotic and autophagic genes were identified related to the …

Noninvasive Temporal Detection Of Early Retinal Vascular Changes During Diabetes, Mohammad A. Saghiri, Andrew Suscha, Shoujian Wang, Ali M. Saghiri, Christine M. Sorenson, Nader Sheibani

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Diabetes associated complications, including diabetic retinopathy and loss of vision, are major health concerns. Detecting early retinal vascular changes during diabetes is not well documented, and only few studies have addressed this domain. The purpose of this study was to noninvasively evaluate temporal changes in retinal vasculature at very early stages of diabetes using fundus images from preclinical models of diabetes.Non-diabetic and Akita/+ male mice with different duration of diabetes were subjected to fundus imaging using a Micron III imaging system. The images were obtained from 4 weeks- (onset of diabetes), 8 weeks-, 16 weeks-, and 24 weeks-old male Akita/+ …

A Tri-Component Knee Plug For The 3rd Generation Of Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation, Lobat Tayebi, Zhanfeng Cui, Hua Ye

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Here, we report a newly designed knee plug to be used in the 3rd generation of Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) in order to heal the damaged knee cartilage. It is composed of three components: The first component (Bone Portion) is a 3D printed hard scaffold with large pores (~ 850 µm), made by hydroxyapatite and β-tricalcium phosphate to accommodate the bony parts underneath the knee cartilage. It is a cylinder with a diameter of 20 mm and height of 7.5 mm, with a slight dome shape on top. The plug also comprises a Cartilage Portion (component 2) which is a …

The Impact Of Impression Coping Geometrical Design On Accuracy Of Implant Impressions: An Experimental Study, Motaz Osman Osman, Neamat Hassan Abubakr, Ahmed Suliman, Hassan Ziada

Dental Medicine Faculty Research

Aim This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of implant impression coping geometrical designs on the accuracy of open and closed impression techniques and in the parallel and nonparallel implant positions. Material and methods Three custom-made acrylic resin models of three tested implant systems (Straumann (R), SIC Invent (R), and Osstem (R)) with diverse coping geometrical designs were evaluated in simulated cases of two parallel and two nonparallel implants. The horizontal and vertical discrepancies were measured and analyzed. Results No statistically significant differences between the two impression techniques in either parallel or nonparallel implants were observed. The high …

Fibroblast Encapsulation In Gelatin Methacryloyl (Gelma) Versus Collagen Hydrogel As Substrates For Oral Mucosa Tissue Engineering, Fahimeh Tabatabaei, Keyvan Moharamzadeh, Lobat Tayebi

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

Over the past decades, a variety of biomaterials have been investigated in terms of their suitability for oral mucosa tissue engineering. The aim of this study was to compare collagen and GelMA hydrogels as connective tissue scaffolds for fibroblasts and as substrates for seeding and culture of oral epithelial keratinocyte cells.

Methods

Human primary oral fibroblast and keratinocyte cells were isolated from gingival biopsies. The mixture of fibroblasts with GelMA or collagen gel were aliquoted within six-well tissue culture plate inserts and cross-linked using visible light or reconstitution buffer/heat, respectively. The viability of fibroblasts in the hydrogels was investigated …

Carbosilane dendrimers are a particular type of dendrimer structure that has been used as delivery vehicles for drugs and nucleic acids. They have a defined structure according to their generation number, and their terminal groups can be rendered cationic or anionic. The cationic charges can address the limitation of electrostatic repulsion between the negatively charged phosphate groups of nucleic acids and negatively charged cell membranes. Specific drugs can be loaded into the central part of the dendrimer or attached at the exterior, and the overall positive charge may improve the efficacy of anti-inflammatory drugs. One promising feature of dendrimers is …

Three-Dimensional In Vitro Oral Mucosa Models Of Fungal And Bacterial Infections, Fahimeh Tabatabaei, Keyvan Moharamzadeh, Lobat Tayebi

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Oral mucosa is the target tissue for many microorganisms involved in periodontitis and other infectious diseases affecting the oral cavity. Three-dimensional (3D) in vitro and ex vivo oral mucosa equivalents have been used for oral disease modeling and investigation of the mechanisms of oral bacterial and fungal infections. This review was conducted to analyze different studies using 3D oral mucosa models for the evaluation of the interactions of different microorganisms with oral mucosa. In this study, based on our inclusion criteria, 43 articles were selected and analyzed. Different types of 3D oral mucosa models of bacterial and fungal infections were …

Introduction: One of the serious public health problems nowadays is the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Hepatitis C virus infection morbidity is associated with a diversity of extrahepatic disorders counting the oral cavity. Some of the oral manifestations are oral diseases like lichen planus and xerostomia and side effects of the virus therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the oral health status, of patients with and without virus C in a sample of the Egyptian population.
Methods: Data were collected from the Gastroenterology department at Benha University. The study was designed as a case-control study; …

Nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCLP) is a common birth defect for which only ~ 20% of the underlying genetic variation has been identified. Variants in noncoding regions have been increasingly suggested to contribute to the missing heritability. In this study, we investigated whether variation in craniofacial enhancers contributes to NSCLP. Candidate enhancers were identified using VISTA Enhancer Browser and previous publications. Prioritization was based on patterning defects in knockout mice, deletion/duplication of craniofacial genes in animal models and results of whole exome/whole genome sequencing studies. This resulted in 20 craniofacial enhancers to be investigated. Custom amplicon-based …
