ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in the oral bacterial flora before and after application of 38% Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF, manufacturer and city/state) to carious lesions. Methods: Fifteen children with at least one cavitated carious tooth and one healthy tooth were enrolled and following examination, a carious tooth was selected to receive SDF treatment. Prior to SDF treatment, two supragingival plaque samples were obtained (using sterile cotton swabs, then storage in transport fluid and frozen at -80oC until DNA extraction) at the first appointment, one carious tooth, another from a non-carious tooth. At the …

The Effects Of Implantoplasty On Implant Design Characteristics And Mechanical Strength, Peter Nasseh
All ETDs from UAB
Implantoplasty is defined as the mechanical removal of the implant threads and the macroscopically rough implant surface. Clinical outcomes such as probing depth and bleed-ing on probing measurements were shown to improve significantly after implantoplasty and peri-implant bone stability was achieved in the majority of the cases. This in-vitro study aims to investigate the effects of implantoplasty on the implant’s maximum compressing force and the type of failure that occurred on different implant sys-tems with different sizes, materials, collar designs and prosthetic connections. A total of 132 screw-shaped titanium implants from different manufacturers (Bi-oHorizons, Zimmer Biomet, and Nobel Biocare) and different …

Objective: The purpose of this study is twofold: To assess the amount of molar intrusion that can be predictably be achieved with clear aligners (Invisalign, Align Technology, Santa Clara, CA, USA) and to quantitatively document the dental and skeletal changes resulting from anterior open bite correction. Methods: This retrospective case-series study analyzed lateral cephalograms of 23 adult anterior open bite patients treated with Invisalign. Pre-treatment (IN) and post-treatment (FN) cephalograms were traced to determine changes as a result of treatment. 13 different variables were measured, 6 angular and 7 linear. All patients were treated consecutively by a single, experienced Invisalign …

Introduction: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is affected in 30-45%% of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) patients, with all JIA subtypes at risk for TMJ involvement. JIA patients with TMJ involvement may present with altered craniofacial morphology, including micrognathia, mandibular retrognathia, a hyperdivergent mandibular plane angle, and skeletal anterior open bite. These features are also commonly present and associated with non-JIA pediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Materials and Methods: The study comprised of a group of 32 JIA patients and a group of 32 healthy control subjects. CBCT images were taken for all patients and were imported into Dolphin Imaging …

Introduction: The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate the maxillary and mandibular expansion achieved with Invisalign First (Align Technology, San Jose, CA) in growing children. Methods: Clinical stereolithography (STL) models of 32 patients in the mixed dentition stage, treated with the Invisalign First, were extracted from the ClinCheck software and analyzed in Dolphin imaging (version 11.95 Premium, Chatsworth, Calif) at three timepoints: T1 (initial records), T2 (virtual outcome prediction), and T3 (achieved outcome). The recorded measurements included: upper and lower primary intercanine and permanent intermolar width, upper and lower primary intercanine and permanent intermolar gingival width, upper arch …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Dental pulp tissue regeneration is based on tissue engineering concepts using stem cells, scaffolds, and growth factors to regenerate the pulp-dentine complex. Up to now, native collagen is commonly used as a biomaterial scaffold for tissue regeneration due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and properties that mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM). However, the bioactivity of collagen scaffold on cell growth and differentiation, and regenerative activities such as extracellular matrix formation and growth factor secretion which are important for pulp revascularization and regeneration and accomplishment root formation is still unclear. Many studies elucidated that adding biomolecules into the collagen scaffold enhanced …

Chitosan/Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Composite Scaffold Incorporated With Trichostatin A For Bone Regeneration, Teerawat Sukpaita
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study synthesized a chitosan-based scaffold incorporated with trichostatin A (TSA), an epigenetic modifier molecule, using a freeze-drying technique to achieve promising bone regeneration potential. The scaffolds with various biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) proportions: 0%, 10%, 20%, and 40% were characterized. The addition of BCP improved the scaffolds' mechanical properties and delayed the degradation rate. From all physicochemical parameters, 20% BCP scaffold matched the appropriate bone scaffold requirements and was selected for further development. The proper concentration of TSA was also tested. Our developed scaffold released TSA and sustained them for up to 3 days. The scaffold with 800 nM …

Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to compare the relative occlusal force between implant in the distal end and tooth adjacent to implant in maximum intercuspation. Methodology: Patients with implant restoration replacing teeth in free end space adjacent to natural tooth were recalled. The occlusion is examined as shim stock passes through the occluded tooth in heavy or light bites. The heavy bite or a light bite with shim stock that cannot pull through is HB1 or LB1. If the shim stock can pull through it is considered HB0 or LB0. The implant is classified into 3 groups, HB1LB0, HB1LB1, and …

Retaining teeth is essential for the quality of life of the aging population. However, aging has biological effects in periodontal ligament cells with significant changes in their proliferative rate and regenerative function. Asiaticoside, extracted from Centella asiatica, was found to have potential in osteogenic differentiation and mineralization in human periodontal ligament cells (HPDLCs). The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of asiaticoside on the aging HPDLCs osteogenic differentiation and mineralization. Aging HPDLCs, retrieved from patients age 60 and above, were confirmed aging status using Senescence-Associated ß -Galactosidase assay. The cells were incubated with various concentrations of asiaticoside …

Role Of Extracellular Adenosine Triphosphate (Eatp) On Immunomodulatory Function Of Human Periodontal Ligament Cells, Maythwe Kyawsoewin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background: Adenosine triphosphate, a nucleotide that acts as an important extracellular messenger, is released into the extracellular environment during various physiologic and pathological conditions. Human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) can release adenosine triphosphate into the extracellular environment in response to mechanical stress. Extracellular adenosine triphosphate (eATP) plays role in both inflammation and osteogenic differentiation processes. eATP also participates in immunosuppressive action on immune cells. However, the role of eATP on the immunomodulatory function of hPDLCs is still unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of eATP on the immunomodulatory function of hPDLCs and the participation of specific purinergic P2 …
