In this study, poly (d, l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) composite microspheres containing anhydrous reverse micelle (R.M.) dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) nanoparticles loaded vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were produced using microfluidic platforms. The VEGF-loaded R.M. nanoparticles (VRM) were achieved by initial self-assembly and subsequent lipid inversion of the DPPC vesicles. The fabricated VRMs were encapsulated into the PLGA matrix by flow-focusing geometry microfluidic platforms. The encapsulation efficiency, in vitro release profile, and the bioactivity of the produced composite microspheres were investigated. The release study showed that VEGF was slowly released from the PLGA composite microspheres over 28 days with a reduced initial burst (18 …

The Acquisition Of Dental Competencies And Clinical Skills: Perceptions From Students, Faculty, Practicing Dentists And Industry Professionals In The Dominican Republic, Laura Virginia Reyes Alardo
Dissertations
The Dominican healthcare system faces many challenges, and dental education is not an exception. The lack of competencies established for dentistry is one of the most critical challenges that dentistry faces. There is no way to guarantee that all dentists receive the same quality education with no standards and lack of competencies. Previous research has revealed that the competencies achieved by dental students determine the way such students develop their professional practice in the future as dental graduates (Alcota, De Gauna, & González, 2016). However, there is a lack of shared language observed in dental education around the world. Not …

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS) is a rare high-grade variant of chondrosarcoma. MSC`s represent about 1% to 9% of chondrosarcomas. Less than 500 cases of MCS have been reported in literature, so far. As opposed to other variants, MSC develops outside of the bone in almost third of the cases. Pain and swelling are the most common symptoms at presentation. The overall prognosis of MSC is poor, with frequent distant metastases. Histopathologically, MCS typically exhibits a biphasic pattern consisting of both small cells, and islands of atypical cartilage. The immunohistochemical profile of this lesion overlaps with several other entities. Resection with wide …

Subjects & methods: This randomized, controlled clinical trial included 16 patients, who were randomly divided into test (IIP +CM) and control (IIP+SCTG) groups. Clinical parameters evaluated at baseline, 3-months, and 6-months were papillary bleeding index (PBI), gingival index (GI), facial probing depth (FPD), palatal probing depth (PPD). Direct measurements of gingival thickness were evaluated at baseline and 6-months follow up. Pink esthetic score (PES) and white esthetic score (WES) were evaluated at …

Future Dental Journal
Background: Passage of gingival fibroblasts/gingival mesenchymal stem cells through macro-perforated barrier membranes may allow them to contribute positively in periodontal regeneration. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of use of Leucocyte Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) on periosteum-derived stem/ progenitor cells (PDPCs) and gingival mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) encouraging their passage through membrane perforations. Methods: twenty patients were randomly allocated into two equal groups; Group I perforated membrane (PM): included intrabony defects treated by perforated membranes. Group II Leucocyte-platelet rich fibrin + perforated membrane (L-PRF + PM): included intrabony defects treated by Leucocyte platelet rich fibrin & perforated …

Effect Of Different Surface Treatments On Bond Strength To Tetragonal And Cubic Zirconia, Mohamed Mahmoud Abdelnaby, Moustafa Nabil Aboushelib, Ossama Saleh Abdelghany, Amr El-Etreby
Future Dental Journal
Background: Dental zirconia has been widely used due to its superior mechanical properties. However, traditional etching techniques and surface treatments are generally ineffective on zirconia surfaces due to its inertness and lack of a silica phase. Hence, various surface treatments are applied to improve bonding to zirconia.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three different surface treatments: low pressure air borne particle abrasion, selective infiltration etching and fusion sputtering on bond strength to both Tetragonal zirconia and Cubic zirconia.
Materials and Methods: Ninety two specimens of zirconia were used in this study. Two of …

Future Dental Journal
Objectives: Evaluation of dentin micro-hardness, dentinal erosion and antibacterial efficiency against E.faecalis after irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) followed by grape seed extract (GSE)solution versus irrigation with NaOCl followed by EDTA.
Materials and Methods: Regarding dentin micro-hardness test; 16 teeth were divided into 2 groups; intervention (5.25%NaOCl+13%GSE) and comparator (5.25%NaOCl+17%EDTA) groups. Each tooth was decoronated and sectioned vertically. Dentin microhardness was evaluated before and after irrigation at the coronal, middle and apical thirds. Representative specimens from the micro-hardness test were used for dentin surface examination using scanning electron microscope (SEM). For the evaluation of the antibacterial efficiency, 18 teeth were …

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of periodontal tissue regeneration in a canine model following post-extraction placement of an implant molded from a composite material made from extracted tooth dentin and a calcium silicate cement (CSC) material. The investigation used autologous dentin in conjunction with a CSC material to form a composite implant designed for immediate tooth replacement. Methods: Two (2) beagles had a periodontal and radiographic examination performed to rule out any pre-treatment inflammation, significant periodontal disease, or mobility. Then, ination eleven (11) teeth were extracted and polyvinyl siloxane molds were made to fabricate …

Dental hygienists face many challenges as they practice during a global pandemic. The strict implementation of a variety of new infection control guidelines needed to prevent the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 has changed the way many oral health professionals practice. On June 9, 2020, the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Advisory Task Force on Dental Practice Recovery issued guidelines that included the preferred use of hand instrumentation over ultrasonic instrumentation for plaque and calculus removal to reduce aerosol production.
As many clinicians are accustomed to using power instrumentation during periodontal therapy, this article will examine the effectiveness of hand instrumentation in the …

Objectives. This study aimed to clinically assess and compare the width of peri-implant keratinized mucosa following the use of a readymade plastic stent with apically repositioned flap versus conventional apically repositioned flap with papillary sparing incisions during single-stage implant placement protocol. Materials and Methods. A total of 20 patients were enrolled in this study. In the test group, a prefabricated implant-retained stent was clipped on the healing abutment after implant surgery to reposition the keratinized tissue buccoapically. In the control group, simple interrupted sutures were applied instead of using a stent. After the surgical procedure, the width of …

In the United States, cardiovascular is the leading cause of death in men and women, and most racial and ethnic groups. There are several types of heart conditions; the most common type is coronary heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease or ischemic heart disease, which can cause acute myocardial infarction. Other heart conditions which can lead to heart failure include a past history of myocardial infarction, abnormal heart valves, heart muscle disease, or congenital heart muscle disease. In adults ages 65 and younger, approximately 2 in 10 deaths are caused from coronary artery disease and about 18.2 million …

Inflammatory lesions such as osteomyelitis of the jaw may share some of the radiographic features of malignancy; however, a demonstrable dental cause for it usually exists. In addition, inflammatory lesions generally stimulate a sclerotic bone reaction, which is uncommon in malignancy. The imaging modality of choice for aiding in the differential diagnosis is computed tomography imaging because of its ability to clearly delineate sequestra and periosteal new bone formation.
