Effects Of Ectodermal Dysplasia On The Maxilla: A Study Of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography, Beyza Karadede Ünal

Makara Journal of Health Research

Background: This study aimed to examine the effects of ectodermal dysplasia (ED) on the transverse width of the maxillary bone.

Methods: The ED group was composed of seven people, while the control group consisted of retrospective cone-beam computed tomography images of seven individuals with skeletal class 1 relationship. Images on the sagittal planes were taken, and cross-sections were taken from the longest point of the Anterior Nasal Spine-Posterior Nasal Spine line. The distance between the distal anterior canine teeth from the right buccal cortical bone to the left buccal cortical bone was measured. At the posterior region, the …

Makara Journal of Health Research

Background: Flaxseed promotes bone health and possibly induces bone regeneration. However, the capacity of flaxseed to induce the differentiation of stem cells into osteoblasts remains unreported. Accordingly, this study aimed to determine the effects of flaxseed extract on the osteoblast differentiation potential of stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED).

Methods: SHED cultured in osteoblast induction media (OIM) were treated with 4 mg/mL flaxseed extract. RNA was collected and extracted with Total RNA Mini Kit (Geneaid) from cells cultured at days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 and subjected to reverse-transcriptase PCR for osteoblast markers ( …

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Symmetry evaluation of the craniofacial complex generally involves models of mandibular movement and masticatory muscle activity, especially during the growth of the craniofacial complex. Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine what, if any, associations exist between the activity of the masticatory muscles, sex, and occlusal classes in asymptomatic young adults. Methods:18-year-old volunteers, showing no symptoms of TMD based on an RDC/TMD examination, were included in the study.Surface electromyography (sEMG) recording was used to quantify the activity of masticatory muscles. The occlusal contact points were analyzed using a T-scan III Evolution 7.01 device. Occlusal classes were …

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Masticatory performance has been studied extensively in the past few decades. Age, gender, the number of teeth in occlusion, occlusal contact area, salivary flow, and neurophysiological deficits influence the masticatory process. The replacement of missing teeth with dental prostheses, whether fixed or removable, is often used to achieve an acceptable level of masticatory performance. Objective: The present study aimed to analyze the association between masticatory performance and age, gender, and oral health status based on the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMF-T) score, denture use, and denture condition in an adult population. Methods: This study included a total …

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

We used a nonhuman primate model of ligature-induced periodontitis to identify patterns of gingival transcriptomic after changes demarcating phases of periodontitis lesions (initiation, progression, resolution). A total of 18 adult Macaca mulatta (12–22 years) had ligatures placed (premolar, 1st molar teeth) in all 4 quadrants. Gingival tissue samples were obtained (baseline, 2 weeks, 1 and 3 months during periodontitis and at 5 months resolution). Gene expression was analyzed by microarray [Rhesus Gene 1.0 ST Array (Affymetrix)]. Compared to baseline, a large array of genes were significantly altered at initiation (n = 6049), early progression (n = 4893), and late progression …

Exploring Mental Health Experience In Individuals Living With Temporomandibular Disorders, Wafaa Safour, Richard Hovey

Patient Experience Journal

Despite the evidence supporting deteriorating mental health because of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) conditions, there is limited evidence of TMD patients' experience regarding how their mental health is affected by the disorders. As a sequence of these conditions, TMD patients suffer from physical and mental complications, not to mention the loss of food enjoyment. In this study, we aim to explore TMD patients' lived experiences who had changed their dietary habits concerning their mental health. Six participants were interviewed to answer open-ended questions during semi-structured interviews regarding their mental health experiences with TMD-related food routine changes. These interviews were held face-to-face …

This patient is a growing case of skeletal class II jaw relation, hypodivergent facial pattern, large overjet and anterior deep overbite with congenitally missing premolars. The treatment contained two folds. In the first stage, functional appliance was designed to help with the skeletal jaw discrepancy. By doing so, the expansion over upper airway was also expected. In the second stage, fixed edgewise appliances were bonded for …

Comparison Of Shear Bond Strengths And Fiction Forces Among Various Self-Ligating Ceramic Brackets, Chia-Lin Wu, Chen-Jung Chang, Tzer-Min Lee, Jen-Bang Lo, Jia-Kuang Liu

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Purpose: Ceramic self-ligating brackets were developed recently, however, only few comparative studies had been reported about their bond strengths and friction. The aim of the study was to compare shear bond strengths and friction forces of various self-ligating ceramic brackets. Materials and methods: The present study is divided into two parts. In shear bond strength test, bovine teeth were used as a substitute for human teeth. Five groups of brackets (three ceramic self-ligating brackets including ClippyC, GeniusCrystal, DamonClear2, ClarityAdvanced (conventional ceramic bracket), Damon3MX (metal self-ligating bracket), were used and debonded with 12 brackets in each group. The shear bond strengths …

Protocol For Conducting Procedural Skills Training With Simulators: A Critical Proposal, Gleyvis Coro-Montanet, Julia Sánchez-Ituarte, Ana De La Hoz-Calvo, María Jesús Pardo-Monedero

Higher Learning Research Communications

Task trainer simulators are often used in medical programs for bachelor’s degree students when teaching procedural skills. They provide the opportunity to practice dangerous maneuvers that students are not ready to perform on real patients yet. The rise of technology has vastly expanded the availability of these devices for use in teaching. To develop a protocol that would account for the complexities of psychomotor learning, based on student progress, and improve training quality, we designed a protocol for the bachelor’s degree program in dentistry. We justify the key elements of the proposal and explain the full working protocol.
