Mechanical Properties And Microstructure Characteristics Of Alloy Parts Produced By Laser Powder Bed Fusion (Lpbf) Method, Hong Yao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a rapid prototyping technology to produce fully functional and complex designing objects. As one of the AM methods, Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) has gained the most attention from both academic researchers and industrial companies. During the LPBF process, metal powders are applied layer by layer, which can be 20 microns to 50 microns in thickness. After a layer is prepared, a high-power laser, which is commonly controlled by a scanning head, is used to selectively melt the interested area of a 2D geometry which is designed in a computer aided designing software. LPBF method can …

Caries is a dental disease caused by bacterial infection. If the cause of the caries is detected early; the treatment will be relatively easy; which in turn prevents caries from spreading. The current common procedure of dentists is to first perform radiographic examination on the patient and mark the lesions manually. However; the work of judging lesions and markings requires professional experience and is very time-consuming and repetitive. Taking advantage of the rapid development of artificial intelligence imaging research and technical methods will help dentists make accurate markings and improve medical treatments. It can also shorten the judgment time of …

A large body of evidence shows the harmful effects of cigarette smoke to oral and systemic health. More recently, a link between smoking and susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was proposed. COVID-19 is due to infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which uses the receptor ACE2 and the protease TMPRSS2 for entry into host cells, thereby infecting cells of the respiratory tract and the oral cavity. Here, we examined the effects of cigarette smoke on the expression of SARS-CoV-2 receptors and infection in human gingival epithelial cells (GECs). We found that cigarette smoke condensates (CSC) upregulated …

Oral Manifestations Of Tuberculosis, Diana V. Macri, Sandra Castellanos, Elvir Dincer

Publications and Research

This article will update the reader on tuberculosis and its oral manifestations.

After decades of decreasing incidence, tuberculosis resurgence is being seen in some global regions due to factors that include the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic, increased immigration from countries with endemic tuberculosis, transmission of tuberculosis in crowded or unsanitary environments, and poor healthcare infrastructure. Additionally, this review is especially prescient considering the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Rotational Forces Generated By Traditional And Loop-Design Clear Aligners, Grant Essink 2021 Loma Linda University

Rotational Forces Generated By Traditional And Loop-Design Clear Aligners, Grant Essink

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Objective: This study aims to evaluate force (F) and torque (Tq) generated by a novel “loop-design” clear aligner compared to the F and Tq generated by a traditional clear aligner design. The novel design may reduce the risk of orthodontic root resorption (ORR), by reducing forces during tooth rotation.

Materials and Methods: Traditional clear aligners (T) and ArchForm Loop clear aligners (AFL) were compared for differences in F and Tq exerted on selected canine and molar teeth. The test tooth was sectioned out of the test model, attached to a load cell and replaced in the test model …

Effects Of Cleaning Agents On The Properties Of Two Different Thermoplastic Retainer Materials, Jennifer Brehove 2021 Marquette University

Effects Of Cleaning Agents On The Properties Of Two Different Thermoplastic Retainer Materials, Jennifer Brehove

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Objective: There are several different thermoplastic retainer materials and cleaning methods available to fabricate and clean clear retainers. Some studies have investigated the changes in properties of clear retainers after being exposed to different staining agents, varying levels of mechanical strain, and different cleaning agents. However, there are few studies that compare different thermoplastic materials to each other when being subjected to these different types of stresses. The aim of this study is to evaluate the changes in properties of two commonly used thermoplastic retainer materials, polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) and ethylene/propylene (EP), after exposure to different retainer cleaning agents over …

Comparing Orthodontic Debonding Aerosol Production With Various High-Volume Evacuation Systems, Eric Moe

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a new emphasis on defining aerosol generating procedures and evaluating ways to reduce those aerosols. Both biocontaminants and particulate matter can potentially be transmitted with dental aerosols with negative health effects associated with each, especially aerosols with particulate matter of 2.5 micrometers or less (PM2.5). This study aims to evaluate the PM2.5 aerosol production from orthodontic debonding with a high-speed, air-driven handpiece without water coolant and assess the effectiveness of traditional four-handed high-volume evacuation (HVE) and two commercially available hands-free high-volume evacuation (HFHVE) systems. Methods: Orthodontic debonding was simulated using a dental manikin and …

Bending And Phase Transformation Properties Of A Force Gradient Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Wire, Brinda Shah 2021 Marquette University

Bending And Phase Transformation Properties Of A Force Gradient Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Wire, Brinda Shah

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Objective: Conventional nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires have widespread application in orthodontics due to their unique properties and ability to move teeth with light, continuous forces, but a shortcoming is that they apply near-uniform force along anterior and posterior teeth. Since the force needed to effectively move teeth is a function of the root surface area and bony support, these archwires cause single-rooted teeth to move more than the multi-rooted molars. With the advent of laser-engineered force gradient NiTi orthodontic archwires, individual forces may be applied to different segments or individual teeth of the arch to maximize tooth movement. The aim of …

Altered Somatosensory Processing In Secondary Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Case Report, Noboru Noma, Kana Ozasa, Andrew Young

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Secondary trigeminal neuralgia might be very rarely preceded by trigeminal neuropathic pain. The patient, in this case, presented with paroxysmal pain in the left mandible and numbness of the lower lip and tongue. Sensory testing of these areas revealed cold and heat hyperalgesia and mechanical hyposensitivity in the mandibular region. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass in the left cerebellopontine angle. The patient was prescribed systemic mirogabalin (2.5 mg/day), which provided some relief until the tumor was removed. The histopathological diagnosis was an epidermoid tumor. This article discusses the clinical characteristics and sensory testing findings that distinguish secondary trigeminal neuralgia …
