Orthognathic Surgery And Quality Of Life Outcomes: Findings From A Hospital-Based Patient Satisfaction Survey, Parth D. Shah Dds, Mph, Victor M. Badner Dmd, Mph, Benn Lieberman Dmd

The New York State Dental Journal

This study examined patient satisfaction and changes in quality of life (QoL) following the orthognathic surgery performed to treat severe dentofacial deformities. The short form of the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) instrument was utilized to measure the negative impact related to severe dentofacial deformities on QoL. Ninety-five patients participated in this survey. Respondents reported significant reduction in the overall OHIP-14 score following the orthognathic surgery (p-value<0.0001). Approximately 92% reported post-operative resolution of their chief concerns. In conclusion, orthognathic surgery was found beneficial as it significantly reduced the negative impact of severe skeletal malocclusion on QoL of the patient we surveyed.

Simple Lipoma Mimicking Oral Infiltrating Lipoma: Case Report, Moacyr Tadeu V. Rodrigues Dds, Msc, Judson N. Brasil Dds, Gabriel A. Guillen Dds, Msc, Cláudio F. Nóia Dds, Phd

The New York State Dental Journal

Lipomas are common soft tissue neoplasms, usually present in the trunk and proximal portions of the extremities and less frequent in the mouth. We reported the case of a 51-year-old patient, affected by an intra/extra-oral swelling for 8 months. Aspiration, surgical excision and histopathological examination confirmed that it was a simple oral lipoma, although clinically and surgically, it mimicked an infiltrating lipoma. Conservative surgical treatment, preferably by an intra-oral approach provides less morbidity and less sequelae for patients.

Medical imaging devices often use automated processing that creates and displays a self-normalized image. When improperly executed, normalization can misrepresent information or result in an inaccurate analysis. In the case of diagnostic imaging, a false positive in the absence of disease, or a negative finding when disease is present, can produce a detrimental experience for the patient and diminish their health prospects and prognosis. In many clinical settings, a medical technical specialist is trained to operate an imaging device without sufficient background information or understanding of the fundamental theory and processes involved in image creation and signal processing. Here, we …

Misinterpreted Orthodontic Procedure Leading On To Depression, Dr.Anusha Pogula, Dr.Kishor M Associate Professor, Psychiatry, Dr.Ashwini T.S

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine

BACKGROUND: Oral health is an important issue that affects not only the teeth and mouth but also general health, appearance, and self-esteem. Risk of having infections including poor oral health and periodontal infections are the most proposed mechanisms of action of depression and anxiety on the human body by modification of the immune system function and increasing pro-inflammatory cytokines and induction of vascular inflammation. It is proposed that these two conditions can cause oral and dental problems since emotional changes can influence oral mucosa. Several researches have also shown a relationship between anxiety or depression and periodontal health.

The Antibacterial Effect And The Incidence Of Post-Operative Pain After The Application Of Nano-Based Intracanal Medications During Endodontic Retreatment: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial, Shehabeldin Mohamed Saber Prof.Dr.

Dentistry

Objective: This clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effect of nano-silver and nano-calcium hydroxide intracanal medicaments (ICM) during retreatment regarding their antibacterial effect and their effect on post-operative pain and flare-ups. Materials and methods: Sixty-nine patients scheduled for endodontic retreatment were included in this randomized clinical trial and randomly allocated to 3 equal groups (n = 23) according to the type of ICM used. The first microbial sampling (S1) representing the original microbiota was obtained after the removal of the old canal filling. After chemo-mechanical debridement, another sample (S2) was obtained representing the microbial state before ICM application. Patients were …

Artificial Intelligence In Dentistry, Orthodontics And Orthognathic Surgery: A Literature Review, Tania Arshad Siddiqui, Rashna Hoshang Sukhia, Dinaz Ghandhi 2022 Foundation University

Artificial Intelligence In Dentistry, Orthodontics And Orthognathic Surgery: A Literature Review, Tania Arshad Siddiqui, Rashna Hoshang Sukhia, Dinaz Ghandhi

Section of Dental-Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to work like humans. The concept initially began with the advent of mathematical models which gave calculated outputs based on inputs fed into the system. This was later modified with the introduction of various algorithms which can either give output based on overall data analysis or by selection of information within previous data. It is steadily becoming a favoured mode of treatment due to its efficiency and ability to manage complex conditions in all specialities. In dentistry, artificial intelligence has also popularised over the past few decades. They have been found useful for …

Objectives: To compare one year retention rate of bonded amalgam sealants (BAS) with that of conventional resin-based sealant (RBS).
Methods: It was a parallel group, equivalence, randomised controlled trial done during March 2018 to December 2019 at the dental clinics of Dow University of Health Sciences, and the Jinnah Sind Medical University, Karachi, Pakistan on children aged 12-16 years, who were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups (BAS vs. RBS). Complete retention of the sealant at one year follow-up was labeled as success. Multi-level mixed effect logistic regression model was employed. Study was registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov # …
