The bone marrow contains various populations of skeletal stem cells (SSCs) in the stromal compartment, which are important regulators of bone formation. It is well-described that leptin receptor (LepR)+ perivascular stromal cells provide a major source of bone-forming osteoblasts in adult and aged bone marrow. However, the identity of SSCs in young bone marrow and how they coordinate active bone formation remains unclear. Here we show that bone marrow endosteal SSCs are defined by fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (Fgfr3) and osteoblast-chondrocyte transitional (OCT) identities with some characteristics of bone osteoblasts and chondrocytes. These Fgfr3-creER-marked endosteal stromal …

Background: Denture cleansing is an important step that can prevent the spread of infection and improve a patient's health, the durability of the dentures, and the overall quality of life; therefore, it is necessary to choose a suitable cleanser that, in addition to being effective, does not have an unfavorable effect on the qualities of the denture base resin itself when used for an extended period.
Aim: This research aims to assess the effects of ozonated water on the surface roughness and hardness of heat-cured acrylic resin by immersion technique.
Materials: Sixty bars shape made of heat-cured acrylic were manufactured. …

The oral microbiome is an important predictor of health and disease. We recently reported significant yet modest effects of HIV under highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART) on the oral microbiome (bacterial and fungal) in a large cohort of HIV-positive (HIV+) and matched HIV-negative (HIV-) individuals. As it was unclear whether ART added to or masked further effects of HIV on the oral microbiome, the present study aimed to analyze the effects of HIV and ART independently, which also included HIV- subjects on preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) therapy. Cross-sectional analyses of the effect of HIV devoid of ART (HIV+ ART- versus matched …

The goal of this senior design project is to produce an alternative to the current market of dental guards available that non-invasively treat Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD). TMJD occurs when there is an anterior dislocation of the articular disk in reference to the condyle. The focus of the design is to prevent patients that have been rehabilitated by a specialist from regressing due to bruxism. Bruxism is a condition where teeth grind, gnash, or clench involuntarily at any time of the day, especially during sleep time. Bruxism engages the Masseter, Temporalis, Medial

Class Iii Malocclusion Camouflage Treatment Using A Conventional Orthodontic Appliance In A Non-Growing Patient, Fransiska Monika, Retno Widayati
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
The treatment of skeletal and dental Class III malocclusions is a challenge for orthodontists, and one of the treatment alternatives for a non-growing patient is orthodontic camouflage treatment. Different approaches may result in different outcomes; therefore, a proper diagnosis and treatment plan are needed to avoid undesirable effects. In this case, a 21-year-old female patient presented with a skeletal Class III malocclusion, with a normal maxilla, prognathic mandible, moderate crowding, and an acceptable facial profile. The treatment modality for orthodontic camouflage treatment was a conventional orthodontic appliance with the extraction of mandibular first premolars to resolve crowding. At the end …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
The article reported the use of improved super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire (ISW), which was developed by Tokyo Medical and Dental University, to correct a case of skeletal Class III malocclusion combined with anterior crowding and anterior crossbite. An 18-year-old male with a chief complaint of poor dental alignment and protruded lower incisors showed up in our clinic for treatment. Clinical examination revealed skeletal Class III facial profile. Anterior crowding and anterior crossbite could be also noted. Because the patient refused orthognathic surgery, we tried camouflage orthodontic treatment. First, we used ISW crossbite arch to eliminate the anterior interference in order …

A 21-year-old female came with chief complaints of inability to incise food and poor esthetics. The patient presented with a concave facial profile, long face with a steep mandibular angle, incompetent lip closure, and acute nasolabial angle. Intraorally, she had negative 6 mm overjet, 3 mm open bite and dental crowding. She was diagnosed as severe skeletal Class III malocclusion and anterior open bite. The treatment plan included orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery and extraction of maxillary second molars, which were supra-erupted and tipped buccally. The pre-operative orthodontic alignment took 11 months. The surgical correction included maxillary Le Fort I …

Treatment Of Class Iii Malocclusion With Facial Asymmetry And Impacted Second Molar: A Case Report, Wei-Yu Chen, Chen-Jung Chang, Jen-Bang Lo, Pei-Ju Wu, Tung-Yiu Wong
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Symmetry is an important factor affecting facial attractiveness. The majority of subjects with facial asymmetry also exhibit Class III (CIII) malocclusion. However, the method used for three-dimensional analysis of facial asymmetry remains controversial. The optimal symmetry plane (OSP) method was developed to eliminate the identification errors that occur when using traditional orthodontic landmarks. Orthodontic treatment can become complicated in the presence of mandibular second molar impaction. Several parameters should be taken into consideration during the treatment planning, such as position of impacted tooth relative to anatomical structures and adjacent tooth and preexisting conditions in the impacted teeth. In this report, …

Purpose: This literature review aimed to investigate the treatment consideration and strategy of mandibular second molar (MM2) comprehensively, which can be of great assistance on managing and solving such a rare disturbance. Methods: Previous studies were identified in PubMed or Embase database using the keywords “orthodontic,” “molar impaction,” and “uprighting molar.” To enrich the contents of every aspect of the topic, other several related articles were also reviewed and included. Results: Forty-six articles were included and systematically discussed in this review, which were arranged according to prevalence, etiology, diagnosis, treatment strategy, and clinical methods. The incidence of MM2 impaction is …

Transverse Malocclusions: Etiology, Development, Diagnosis And Treatment, Ib Leth Nielsen
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Malocclusions that involve the transverse dimension are very common in the orthodontic office. They can be as simple as a crossbite of the posterior teeth or as severe as a Class III malocclusion with a mandibular asymmetry. Transverse malocclusions can vary from being a simple dento-alveolar problem to a more complex challenge as represented by a skeletal asymmetry that has developed after puberty and causing temporomandibular disorder (TMD) problems. In this review we shall address the most common types of transverse malocclusions and review their etiology and development. The most typical etiology of transverse anomalies will be discussed, and we …

Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine parental acceptability of the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) as an alternative treatment for carious legions. In addition, we examined potential factors influencing higher levels of SDF acceptance. Methods Project was approved by the institutional review board. Parents of patients receiving care at Nova Southeastern University’s dental clinics were asked to review an educational document related to the use and side effects of SDF; surveys were then distributed to assess willingness to use this treatment for their child. SDF acceptance was measured by mean scores on the SDF Feasibility Questionnaire; …

Purpose: to assess the remineralization capacity of MI varnish and Bifluorid 10 varnish on induced white spot lesions in deciduous enamel, using Scanning Electron Microscope- Energy Dispersive X-ray. Materials and methods: Sixty human caries-free deciduous teeth were collected. The teeth were stored in 0.1% thymol solution. A 4*4*2 window was created on the buccal surface of each tooth using acid-resistant nail varnish. Samples were then divided into 3 groups according to the remineralizing agent used, each group containing 20 teeth. Group I was remineralized with MI varnish, group II was remineralized using Bifluorid 10 varnish, while group III was a …
