Barriers To Membership In The American Dental Hygienists’ Association In The State Of Georgia, Brandy Henderson

Professional associations must have a significant level of membership to be effective. Georgia membership is increasingly low; therefore, ADHA cannot represent dental hygienists’ interests. This study determined factors that caused dental hygienists to continue to forgo membership in the ADHA. Several theoretical views of professional membership were considered. The sample was acquired from an unbiased systematic sampling of 50% (3,270) of registered dental hygienists and a convenience sampling of ADHA nonmembers at 2 continuing education seminars in Georgia. Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine if there was any significant difference in treatment time or results due to varying levels of attending doctor coverage in the Loma Linda University (LLU) graduate orthodontics clinic. Methods and Materials: The main study group of 191 subjects was split into high, medium and low coverage groups by primary attending doctor coverage and then by original attending doctor coverage. Treatment times, treatment results, and other variables were evaluated for each of the groups. Treatment results were evaluated using UK Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) scores. Introduction: Most current methods of obtaining images for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning involve the use of ionizing radiation. Given that patients often need records taken several times during treatment, an alternative should be found that does not involve ionizing radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exists as a possible alternative. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare cephalometric measurements obtained from lateral cephs, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, and MR scans. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the precision of lateral cephalometric Ricketts analysis measurements from NewTom 5G CBCT (NewTom) synthesized lateral cephalograms with Sirona Orthophos XG Plus (Sirona) digital lateral cephalograms. Materials & Methods: A Sirona digital lateral cephalogram and a NewTom synthesized lateral cephalogram of a phantom in the orthogonal and perspective projections were created. Introduction: The objective of this study was to determine the anterior/posterior position of the mandible at which an orthodontist and oral surgeon would advise bilateral sagittal split osteotomy advancement or set back when evaluating adult female photos and silhouettes. Material & Methods: Fifty-one adult female profile photos and lateral cephalograms were collected. Subjects were selected who met three criteria: 1) ANB of 0-2, 2) balanced profile image, and 3) age greater than 18. Safety net clinics across the country struggle with a lack of resources to tackle the needs presented. Screening programs set up for children and elderly have proven to be effective in triaging need, prioritizing care, and maximizing resources. These programs do not currently exist for working uninsured adults. Research was initiated to answer the question: Does the screening process improve patient care for the community clinic? During a 6-week pilot study a licensed dental hygienist performed 30 screenings in the community clinic setting. Findings were recorded and coded according to patient’s level of need identified. The development of decalcification around orthodontic brackets and bands, commonly called white spot lesions (WSLs), is often observed in patients with poor oral hygiene during treatment (Behnan et al., 2010, Rodgers et al., 2010). In many instances, these WSLs continue to be visible after the removal of fixed appliances and after natural remineralization. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate, via CBCT, the dental and osseous effects of patients who had completed comprehensive orthodontic treatment with rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in conjunction with Ricketts prescription brackets. Thirty consecutive patients (16 males, 14 females; mean age = 13.9  1.9 years) who required RME as part of their orthodontic treatment and had pre-RME (T1), post-RME (T2) and final orthodontic (T3) CBCT images were included in the study. Apical periodontitis is the most common pathological process in the periapical region. Disciplined clinical and radiographic evaluations and appropriate diagnostic tests can detect lesions related to apical periodontitis. Aside from this, lesions mimicking pulp-related pathology but unrelated to pulpal infection and necrosis are occasionally discovered in the periapical region. Remarkable Resilience Of Teeth (How Are Teeth So Brittle Yet So Resilient), Paul J. Constantino

Tooth enamel is inherently weak, with fracture toughness comparable with glass, yet it is remarkably resilient, surviving millions of functional contacts over a lifetime. We propose a microstructural mechanism of damage resistance, based on observations from ex situ loading of human and sea otter molars (teeth with strikingly similar structural features). Section views of the enamel implicate tufts, hypomineralized crack-like defects at the enamel–dentin junction, as primary fracture sources. We report a stabilization in the evolution of these defects, by ‘‘stress shielding’’ from neighbors, by inhibition of ensuing crack extension from prism interweaving (decussation), and by self-healing.
