Designing Biomimetic Implant Surfaces To Promote Osseointegration Under Osteoporotic Conditions By Revitalizing Mechanisms Coupling Bone Resorption To Formation, Ethan M. Lotz
Theses and Dissertations
In cases of compromised bone remodeling like osteoporosis, insufficient osseointegration occurs and results in implant failure. Implant retention relies on proper secondary fixation, which is developed during bone remodeling. This process is disrupted in metastatic bone diseases like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is characterized low bone mass and bone strength resulting from either accelerated osteoclast-mediated bone resorption or impaired osteoblast-mediated bone formation. These two processes are not independent phenomena. In fact, osteoporosis can be viewed as a breakdown of the cellular communication connecting bone resorption to bone formation. Because bone remodeling occurs at temporally generated specific anatomical sites and at different times, …

Effect Of Pre-Heating Temperatures On Microshear Bond Strength And Degree Of Conversion Of A Dual-Cured Resin Core Foundation, Sara Adel Botros
Dentistry
Aim: To evaluate the effect of pre-heating temperatures of a dual-cured adhesive and a dualcured resin composite as well as tubule orientation on micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) to dentin. The degree of conversion (DC%) of the adhesive and the composite was also evaluated at the different temperatures. Materials and Methods: For µSBS, 90 human molars were randomly divided into 18 groups (n=5) according to the three experimental factors. Factor 1: Adhesive temperature, Factor 2: Resin composite temperature; and Factor 3: Tubule orientation (occlusal or axial). Adhesive and composite temperatures were set at 25ºC, 32ºC and 40ºC. The adhesive was applied …

Effect Of Shear Bond Strength With Novel Apc™ Flash-Free Brackets And Different Bonding Protocol: An In Vitro Study, Carl Bernstein
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background and Objectives: In today’s time, there is an increasingly crowded field of competition vying over a small subset of the population. Now, more than ever it is imperative to compete with efficiency and esthetics. Each step for orthodontic bonding procedures increases the chance for error to occur. However, orthodontic bracket, etchant, sealant, and adhesive material has the ability to improve bond strength and final outcome for the patient and provider. The aim of this study was to determine effective bonding protocols for Advanced Clarity APC™ Flash-Free Brackets and to determine if adhesive remains on enamel or orthodontic bracket after …

Design Of Parallel Robot For Dental Articulation And Its Optimization, Abulimiti Delimulati
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A dental articulator is a mechanical device used to simulate the relative position and motion between the upper and lower jaw when constructing and testing dental prostheses. Typically, it can be adjusted to approximate patient-specific jaw kinematics in order to analogue the static relationship and specific motions of a patient’s mandible to maxilla. However, the use of dental articulators is essentially a trial-and-error method in order to fine-tune fit and function of a dental prosthesis. Some of the most advanced current dental articulators can reproduce the position and the motion passively; furthermore, dentists need special training for measuring patients’ maxillofacial …

Orthodontic Bond Strength Comparison Between Two Filled Resin Sealants, James Kolstad
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Introduction: Sealants are used in orthodontics to help prevent demineralization during treatment. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the shear bond strength (SBS) between two different resin sealants bonded to teeth. Materials and Methods: Extracted human premolars (n=20/group) were randomly divided and prepared by acid etching, followed by application of primer or sealant. Group 1, the control group, used Transbond XT Primer (3M Unitek). Groups 2 and 3 were prepared with the sealants L.E.D. Pro Seal (Reliance Orthodontic Products) and Opal Seal (Opal Orthodontics) respectively. Transbond XT Adhesive was applied to a …

Evaluation Of The Biocompatibility And Micromechanical Properties Of Experimental Dental Adhesives, Hoda Moussa
Forensic Science Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility and micromechanical properties of newly synthesized antibacterial monomer and cross-linker functional surfactants into a commercially available dental adhesive (Single Bond, 3M ESPE, Saint Paul, MN, USA) at three concentrations (0.05, 0.1, 0.25 mg/mg). All groups were analyzed by evaluation of micro-tensile bond strength, ultimate tensile strength, cell viability, antibacterial properties, and surface micro-hardness. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for interfacial characterization.
Human extracted molars were used as a substrate for bonding adhesives for the micro-tensile bond strength (MTBS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. Twenty resin-dentin beams (0.9 ± …

Effect Of Porcelain Thickness And Translucency On The Final Shade Of Ips E.Max Cad Overlaying A Dark Substrate., Peter F. Alena
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
IPS e.max is a very esthetic lithium disilicate used in dental ceramics. Unfortunately, it can unintentionally change color after cementation with resin cements. The purpose of this study is to better understand how combining thickness and translucency affects the post-cementation shade of IPS e.max CAD overlaying a dark substrate, thereby enabling clinicians to choose more appropriate techniques and materials. IPS e.max CADs (A1 shade) had either a low translucency (LT) or high translucency (HT), and cut with 0.3mm, 0.5mm, and 1.0mm thicknesses. Each sample overlaid a resin cement and dark substrate, a spectrophotometer helped derive the color difference (ΔE*ab), and …

Dental Hygiene ETDs
Swimming is known worldwide as one of the healthiest, low-impact forms of exercise and for the subsequent promotion of a strong body, heart, and mind. However, many swimmers and non-swimmers do not realize that swimming in a pool can have a negative effect on the oral cavity. Several studies have suggested that pool chlorination is responsible for dental erosion, calculus formation, and stain in competitive and recreational swimmers, and this phenomenon is known as ‘swimmer’s mouth.’ A pilot experimental research study was conducted that evaluated the prevalence of chlorine stain in the oral cavity of twenty-one female swimmers from the …
