Case Presentation: Lower Back Pain Or Chronic Acetaminophen Overdose?, Meghan Whitt, Christopher Schwartz, Bhumi Shah

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Unintentional ingestions can pose a difficult challenge to diagnose in the setting of the Emergency Department. Many may present with vague symptoms that are not consistent with classic overdose prodromes. Many patients do not identify or disclose over the counter medications, such as analgesics, with which acute/chronic ingestion in large quantities can result in life threatening medical emergencies. Their underlying symptoms may also cloud their clinical picture, further complicating workup within the ED.

Evaluation Of A Keratin 1 Targeting Peptide-Doxorubicin Conjugate In A Mouse Model Of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Azam Saghaeidehkordi, Shiuan Chen, Sun Yang, Kamaljit Kaur

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Chemotherapy is the main treatment for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a subtype of breast cancer that is aggressive with a poor prognosis. While chemotherapeutics are potent, these agents lack specificity and are equally toxic to cancer and nonmalignant cells and tissues. Targeted therapies for TNBC treatment could lead to more safe and efficacious drugs. We previously engineered a breast cancer cell targeting peptide 18-4 that specifically binds cell surface receptor keratin 1 (K1) on breast cancer cells. A conjugate of peptide 18-4 and doxorubicin (Dox) containing an acid-sensitive hydrazone linker showed specific toxicity toward TNBC cells. Here, we report the …

Analysis Of Multigenerational Behavioral Effects Of Dietary Benzo[A]Pyrene Exposure In Adult Zebrafish, Mary Beth Gillespie

Honors Theses

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is linked to negative reproductive and developmental effects in humans and animals. Because BaP is carcinogenic, and its continued presence in the environment allows it to be inhaled and ingested, better understanding of the effects of BaP is needed. To determine the behavioral effects of BaP exposure, zebrafish were used as a model. Wild-type zebrafish (5D) underwent two separate 21-day dietary exposures to 2.5 and 25 μg BaP/g fish to compare how BaP exposure affects locomotor activity. Following the dietary exposure, fish were mated to obtain and raise the F1 generation to …

Investigations Involving Mononuclear And Dinuclear Transition Metal Catalysts For Photochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Ansu Edwards

Honors Theses

There is currently a global energy crisis, which is in desperate need of solutions. New energy sources are required that will not pollute as much as our longstanding reliance on nonrenewable fossil fuels as an energy source. This pollution involves large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, predominantly carbon dioxide (CO2), that contribute to environmental problems such as climate change. In this context, a fairly recent research direction to address this problem is the development of transition metal catalysts that can convert CO2 into reduced carbon products that can serve as chemical fuels. This work focuses on the …

Synthesis And Self-Assembly Of Amphiphilic Block Copolymers For The Fabrication Of Non-Spherical Polymersomes, Tamuka Chidanguro

Dissertations

Polymersomes, also known as polymer vesicles, have gained a lot of interest over the past two decades. These hollow spherical systems are made via the self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers and have found use in a range of areas from drug delivery, to cellular models, to nanoreactors. Their hollow nature allows them to carry hydrophilic cargo in their inner compartment and hydrophobic cargo in their membrane. Over the last decade, increasing efforts have focused on controlling the morphology of polymersomes. Research has shown that polymersome morphology plays an important role for instance in drug delivery, where tubular or rod-like vesicles …

The Impact Of Prolonged Estrogen Deficiency On Cardiac Hypertrophy Following Chronic Sympathetic Stimulation, Isabelle Krueger

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women in developed countries. Compared to age-matched males, premenopausal women experience lower rates of CVD but this increases after menopause. A central feature in CVD is changes in sympathetic regulation leading to pathological changes such as cardiac hypertrophy characterized by changes in cardiomyocyte size due to overcompensation of the muscle following injury. The goal of this research is to study the effect of prolonged estrogen loss on cardiac hypertrophy following chronic sympathetic stimulation. Female mice were ovariectomized at 10 weeks of age and treated with Isoproterenol to …

Identification And Characterization Of Butyrate-Producing Species In The Human Gut Microbiome, Grace Maline

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) including ulcerative colitis, indeterminate colitis, and Crohn’s disease are increasingly common conditions that places a high physical and financial burden on individuals and global healthcare systems. Though many treatments exist for these conditions, their unpredictable nature and causation make them difficult to manage across the variety of IBD patients. Additionally, many of these treatments come with undesirable side effects or modes of delivery. Therefore, it is worthwhile to explore the use of Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate whose affects in the human gut include decreased inflammation and decreased risk of colorectal cancer. As …

Although exposure to PM2.5 is an established risk factor for CVD, the contribution of other hazardous pollutant exposure to CVD is less clear. Overall, this work aimed to examine the effect of pollutants with lesser documented effects on cardiovascular disease using a multi-pronged approach to exposure assessment. The three aims were to examine the relationship between county-level toxic chemical releases and CVD mortality in the contiguous United States between 2002 and 2012, to assess the relationship between individual-level VOC metabolites and vascular function, and to build multipollutant …

Computational Design Of Β-Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives For Ph-Specific Binding, Nayiri Alexander, Makena Augenstein, Angelina Sorensen, Matthew Gartner 2021 Chapman University

Computational Design Of Β-Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives For Ph-Specific Binding, Nayiri Alexander, Makena Augenstein, Angelina Sorensen, Matthew Gartner

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Opioids such as morphine are important pain-relieving drugs but also carry a risk of harmful side effects including addiction. Morphine is active in both healthy and inflamed tissue, however, decreasing the pKa of the biochemically-active amine group can promote selective binding in the more acidic conditions of inflamed tissue and reduce harmful side effects associated with opioids. Herein, we explore the impact of fluorination on the pKa of fluoromorphine derivatives to identify which will bind selectively in inflamed tissue. Theoretical pKa values are determined at the M06-2X(SMD)/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory to calculate the ΔGaq" …

Heterocyclic Amines And Arylamine N-Acetyltransferase 2 Polymorphism In Pathogenesis Of Insulin Resistance., Kennedy M. Walls

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are formed when cooking meats at high temperatures or for long periods of time, and their major metabolic pathway includes hepatic N‑hydroxylation by CYP1A2 followed by O-acetylation by N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2). NAT2 is a highly polymorphic gene involved in metabolism of drugs and xenobiotics, and its single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) produce phenotypes characterized as slow, intermediate, or rapid acetylator. Recent studies have documented associations between HCAs and insulin resistance and between certain NAT2 phenotypes and insulin resistance. In this study, we demonstrated that NAT2 activity and exposure to certain HCAs may alter cellular glucose …
