Leaf Appearance And Elongation In Panicum Maximum Cv. Tanzania Tillers Of Varying Ages, Domicio Nascimento Jr., Rogério T. Barbosa, Valéria P. B. Euclides, S. C. Da Silva, R. A. Torres
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A sward may be considered as a tiller population of varying ages and sizes, and these different age groups are likely to present distinct behaviour in terms of growth and herbage production. However, there is very little information on how tiller age, in association with grazing management practices (e.g. frequency and intensity of grazing), alter morphogenetic characteristics and, therefore, herbage production. Against this background, the present experiment had the objective to evaluate leaf appearance and elongation in Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania tillers of different age groups when submitted to intermittent grazing regimes.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In Yucatan cattle production is limited by forage availability during the dry season. L. leucocephala has good nutritive value (24 - 30% CP) and can stand drought and grazing, therefore its use in mixture with grasses is recommended. However, in association both species could compete for light, water and nutrients. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of introduction of L. leucocephala with different densities on root density of P. maximum.

Comparison Of A Biometric Method With Clipping And Weighing Method For Estimating The Yield Of Artemisia Sieberi (Case Study Zarand-E-Save Region), H. Dianati, M. Abedi, E. Shahriary, Hossein Arzani
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Forage production is a most important vegetation attribute in rangeland analysis and evaluation and use in management practices. Artemisia sieberi covered about 47% of the rangeland area in Iran and scientists need to know the best method for analysis and evaluation of this species. Clipping and weighing has high precision, but this method is time-consuming and expensive and alternative methods are required. Russian scientists developed a biometric method based on plant dimensions and suggest this method for rangelands in the Middle East (discussed by Dianati, 2003). In America, Muray (1982) used plant dimensions for yield estimation and regression models for …

The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilisation On The Morphological Development And Growth Rate Of Star Grass (Cynodon Nlemfuensis), P. P. Del Pozo, R. S. Herrera, A. Hameleers
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Nitrogen is one of the main inputs used in forage production systems to increase productivity. However, in Cuba, the availability of fertiliser N is limited and therefore if applied, needs to be used with high efficiency. Previous studies (Johnson, 2001, Del Pozo, 2003) investigated the effects of N on growth, carbohydrate and protein content but did not consider morphological changes in Cynodon nlemfuensis. A study was therefore undertaken investigating how N application influences morphological development of the plant and how these changes might affect the efficiency of use of applied N.

Over the last 25 years more than 70 M ha of native vegetation in Brazil have been replaced by pastures for beef production. The substitution of native vegetation on such a large scale with African grasses (mainly of the genera Brachiaria and Panicum) is likely to have an impact on nutrients and organic matter composition, as well as a regional impact on hydrology and water quality.

Row Spacing And Productivity Of Russian Wild Rye Pastures In Semiarid Environments, J. D. Berdahl, S. L. Kronberg, J. R. Hendrickson, J. F. Karn
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
To sustain forage yields in dry years in semiarid climates, row spacings >59cm have been recommended for Russian wild rye [Psathyrostachys juncea (Fisch.) Nevski] (Lawrence & Heinrichs, 1968). However, wide row spacings promote weed invasion, soil erosion, and elevated plant crowns resulting in a rough, "washboard" ground surface (Kilcher, 1961). Jefferson and Kielly (1998) suggested a 30-cm row spacing for optimum sustainable forage yields in Russian wild rye in the semiarid prairie region of Canada. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between row spacing and productivity of Russian wild rye at two semiarid sites near Mandan, in the …

Production And Non-Production Functions Of Grassland In An Upland Region Of Slovakia, J. Cunderlik, L. Gonda, J. Tomaskin
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The importance of grassland lies chiefly in its production of good quality forage that is utilised by cattle and sheep. In upland and mountain regions the non-production functions of grassland such as landscape enhancement or water catchment are especially important. These functions are performed mainly through the sward tillering zone (boundary area between above-ground vegetation and roots) and root characteristics (Jancovic, l985). The objective of this research was to study the biomass above, at, and below ground level of three sward types at different fertilisation levels.

An Appraisal Of The Potential For Soybeans In The United Kingdom, C. A. Sawyer, G. P. F. Lane, W. P. Davies
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Soybean is a most important crop worldwide, accounting for 56% of world oilseed production and 69% of world protein meal consumption in 2003 (Soystats, 2004). Since their introduction in the early 1800's, forage soybeans have been grown widely in USA. Used originally as a forage crop, this use largely had been forgotten until Dr T. E. Devine (United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service; USDA-ARS) released 4 new forage cultivars. Soybeans potentially offer UK farmers a high quality protein source in a short season and also meet the requirements of supermarket chains to remain GM free. This paper aims …

Red Clover In Monoculture Or In Association With Grasses?, A. De Vliegher, L. Carlier
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Sowing grass or clover under a cereal cover crop or after the harvest of the cereal is common practice, but there still are some questions about seed mixtures regarding monocultures or mixtures, especially when the fodder crop has to be productive for more than 2 years. In this experiment seed mixtures with clovers and grasses in a cereal cover situation were compared in terms of DM yield, energy and protein content and proportions of grass, clover and weeds.

Productive Longevity And Yield Quality Of Galega-Grass Swards, Aleksandr Adamovich
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Fodder galega (Galega orientalis Lam.) is an early maturing, very productive perennial forage legume that fixes atmospheric nitrogen. Unlike other legumes, pure stands of fodder galega provide stable yields of green feed and seeds and do not thin out between the years. The symbiotic potential of fodder galega to grow in mixtures with grasses can be exploited to produce ecologically safe forage and animal products.

Developments In The Use Of Plantain (Plantago Lanceolata) Cultivars In New Zealand Pastures, A. V. Stewart, H. G. Judson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The use of pasture herbs, such as chicory, is commonplace in New Zealand in recent years. This has stimulated interest in other herb species such as plantain (Plantago lanceolata) that often occurs as a ubiquitous weed in temperate pastures throughout the world. In the last decade 2 improved commercial cultivars, Grasslands Lancelot (Rumball et al., 1997) and the erect, winter active Ceres Tonic (Stewart, 1996), have been bred in New Zealand for use in pastures. These cultivars have useful agronomic features that make them valuable for grazing. They are productive in mixtures, palatable to grazing animals, and …

Agronomic Value Of Mixture Of Perennial Rye-Grass Cultivars: Preliminary Results, W. G. Do Nascimento, F. Surault, J. C. Emile, Christian Huyghe
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Mixtures of grass and legume species are commonly used in sown grasslands. Mixtures have been shown to be favourable for stable production over cycles and years due to a succession of species over time (Mosimann & Charles, 1996 ; Nie et al, 2004). However, little is known whether the genetic variation in pure stands has an influence on the agronomic value and its variation over seasons.

Yield Components In Annual Ryegrass And Oats Grown In Association And Monoculture, Pedro Arturo Martínez Hernández, A. Martínez-Hernández, E. Cortés Díaz, E. Ojeda
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Earliness of oats and higher growth rate of annual ryegrass later in the season explain the higher forage yield of annual ryegrass+oats association over monocultures (Améndola & Morales, 1997). However, changes in yield components of the species grown in association compared to monoculture have not been explored. This study aimed to determine leaf, stem and dead matter yield in annual ryegrass and oats when grown in association and monoculture at different nitrogen (N) levels.

Field Performance Of An Annual Medic Tolerant Of Sulfonylurea Herbicide Residues, Jacob H. Howie, C. A. Bell
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides such as triasulfuron, chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron-methyl are used extensively in the cereal-livestock zones of temperate Australia. They are regarded by farmers as effective, cheap and safe-to-apply herbicides with useful levels of residual activity in the year of application. However these residues can persist into following years, particularly in areas with alkaline soils and low rainfall, where their breakdown by microbial action and chemical hydrolysis is significantly reduced. Regenerating pasture legumes typically used in Australian ley farming systems are highly intolerant of even very low residues of SU herbicides (e.g. < 1ppb; Heap, 2000) resulting in severe stunting, reduced dry matter production, lower seed yields, poor persistence and decreased N fixation. In this study we compare the field performance of an artificially induced mutant cultivar (FEH-1) of annual strand medic (Medicago littoralis) with putative tolerance to sulfonylurea …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The new herbicide GF-839 is a combination of a new active substance aminopyralid and the fully approved active substance fluroxypyr in the quantities 30 g ae/l aminopyralid + 100 g ae/l fluroxypyr. It is an emulsion, water in oil formulation (EO), and will be sold as a foliar acting herbicide for the long-term control of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds in grassland. Globally aminopyralid can be used for weed control in range and pasture situations and plantations; in addition, uses in oilseed rape and cereals are also being explored. Aminopyralid is the most active halopyridine yet discovered and as a …

Potential Biological Control Agents For Nassella Neesiana (Poaceae) Invading Australian Native Grasslands, F. E. Anderson, M. L. Díaz, D. A. Mclaren
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The introduction and proliferation of exotic stipoid grasses over the past 100 years seriously threatens agricultural productivity and the integrity of Australia's indigenous flora and fauna, particularly its grasslands (McLaren et al., 1998). The full effect on biodiversity by the spread of these grasses is unknown but likely to be major (Hocking, 1998). Conventional control techniques have not stopped the invasion adequately, so it is a priority to find control options to achieve an effective management strategy. A biological control project against Nassella trichotoma and N. neesiana was initiated in 1999 in Argentina. We report on the most recent …

Density And Germination Characteristics Of Seeds Of Bromus Tectorum In Field Seedbanks, J. A. Young, Charlie D. Clements
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Bromus tectorum is a highly invasive exotic weed that has spread over millions of hectares of grazing land in the semi-arid regions of far western North America. The annual grass is an important grazing resource, but herbage production is highly variable among years, depending on the amount and periodicity of precipitation. When production is abundant, the accumulations of fine-textured, early-maturing herbage increase the chance of ignition and the rate of spread of wildfires. On certain years the area burned in such fires may be several million hectares. Such fires destroy forage resources and degrade watershed quality on extensive areas as …
