Micropropagation And Acclimatization Of 'Norton' Grapevine (Vitis Aestivalis), Brant B. Bigger 2010 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Micropropagation And Acclimatization Of 'Norton' Grapevine (Vitis Aestivalis), Brant B. Bigger

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Propagation of the Vitis aestivalis cultivar 'Norton‘ (syn='Cynthiana‘) through traditional woody cuttings has been difficult. Rooting of woody cuttings has been a major hindrance in propagating this cultivar and providing enough plants to meet grower needs. In vitro propagation offers another method of increasing plant material. Cultures were established and maintained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 4 M 6-benzyladenine (BA) and thiamine at 0.5 mg•L-1 and solidified with Difco-Bacto agar at 7.5 g•L-1. The objectives of this study were to determine optimal methods for in vitro production and ex vitro establishment of 'Norton‘ plantlets. …

An Examination Of Targeted Gene Neighborhoods In Strawberry, Thomas M. Davis, Melanie E. Shields, Qian Zhang, Denise Tombolato-Terzić, Jeffrey L. Bennetzen, Ana C. Pontaroli, Hao Wang, Qin Yao, Phillip SanMiguel, Kevin M. Folta 2010 University of New Hampshire

An Examination Of Targeted Gene Neighborhoods In Strawberry, Thomas M. Davis, Melanie E. Shields, Qian Zhang, Denise Tombolato-Terzić, Jeffrey L. Bennetzen, Ana C. Pontaroli, Hao Wang, Qin Yao, Phillip Sanmiguel, Kevin M. Folta

Biological Sciences

This report details the structure and content of targeted regions of the strawberry genome. The data indicate that the strawberry genome is gene-dense, with an average of one protein-encoding gene or pseudogene per 5.9 kb. Current overall EST coverage is sparse. The unexpected gene duplications and their differential patterns of EST support suggest possible subfunctionalization or pseudogenization of these sequences. This report provides a high-resolution depiction of targeted gene neighborhoods that will aid whole-genome sequence assembly, provide valuable tools for plant breeders and advance the understanding of strawberry genome evolution.

Marketing Options For Grapes And Grape Products, Pamela Brady, Michael Thomsen, Justin R. Morris 2010 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Marketing Options For Grapes And Grape Products, Pamela Brady, Michael Thomsen, Justin R. Morris

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Many owners of small- and medium-size farms in Arkansas and across the U.S. have begun to explore the potential of juice and wine grapes as an alternative crop to increase the profitability and stability of their farming operations. Grapes are unique in that they are not only well-suited for marketing through traditional commercial channels but also are popular in direct marketing venues such as produce stands, farmers markets, community sponsored agricultural ventures, and pick-your-own operations. This publication provides an overview of the various types of market channels available for grape growers and explores their potential as outlets for regional grape …

Characterization And Inheritance Assessment Of Fruit And Leaf Shape In Unique Vitis Seedlings, Paul J. Sandefur, John R. Clark, Douglas Karcher 2010 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Characterization And Inheritance Assessment Of Fruit And Leaf Shape In Unique Vitis Seedlings, Paul J. Sandefur, John R. Clark, Douglas Karcher

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

From August to October of 2009, two separate studies were conducted to assess fruit shape of Vitis section Euvitis hybrid bunch grapes using digital photography (Study 1) and evaluate inheritance of leaf shape in unique populations of V. rotundifolia hybrids (Vitis section Muscadinia) (Study 2). All vines studied were located at the University of Arkansas Fruit Research Station, Clarksville. Study 1 used SigmaScan® digital photography analysis software to calculate shape factor, major:minor axis ratio, and compactness of highly variable, unique-shaped fruit from a population of 182 Euvitis seedlings. SigmaScan® accurately characterized fruit shape elongation as had been recorded in previous …

Physiological And Biochemical Attributes Of Red-Fleshed Dragon Fruit, Hylocereus Polyrhizus., Punitha R. Vasanthan 2010 Universiti Malaya

Physiological And Biochemical Attributes Of Red-Fleshed Dragon Fruit, Hylocereus Polyrhizus., Punitha R. Vasanthan

Student Works (2010-2019)

An understanding of the postharvest parameters is essential for the successful market introduction of red-fleshed dragon fruit, Hylocereus polyrhizus, which has been recently developed as fruit crop. In this study, fruit at three different harvest maturities were evaluated in terms of physiological and biochemical aspects. Fruit which were harvested at complete red stage maintained their quality for up to one week. On the other hand, fruit harvested at early maturity attained the physical properties of fruit ripened on the plant (firmness reduced, peel colour changes, pH increased) but they contained noticeably lower concentrations of soluble sugars suggesting that fruit can …
