Examining The Maternal Investment Of The Calyptra And Its Influence On The Sporophyte Offspring, Alessandra Marie Cabrera Aromin
Masters Theses
Maternal care is a critical component of offspring survival, development, and fitness in many organisms. In early diverging lineages of plants (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts), offspring sporophytes are physically attached to and nutritionally dependent on the maternal gametophyte throughout their lifespan. Mosses have a unique structure that is a maternal cap of gametophyte tissue that covers the sporophyte apex during critical developmental stages. The calyptra has shown to positively impact sporophyte survival and fitness. My research examines the influence of calyptra size on sporophyte growth and development.

Plagiochila es uno de los géneros más representativos de hepáticas en Colombia. En el país, el género puede encontrarse a lo largo del gradiente altitudinal, con rangos que van desde los 30 a 4300 m, aunque su mayor riqueza se encuentra principalmente en los bosques andino y altoandino, en los que desempeña procesos que aseguran la estabilidad ecológica de los ecosistemas como la regulación del recurso hídrico. En este estudio, utilizamos por primera vez datos del GBIF y del Catálogo en línea de plantas y líquenes de Colombia para investigar aspectos de la diversidad y distribución espacial del género Plagiochila …

Fungi perform several critical functions in the environment. Spatiotemporal distributions of fungal communities will mediate when and where these functions happen and how they vary across the landscape. I first explored tropical tree canopy fungal community variation at small spatial scales and documented near total turnover of fungi across sub-meter distances and among adjacent substrates. The second chapter analyzed fungal turnover over the course of three years, where community stability was driven primarily by abundant fungi. In the third chapter, I tested effects of the environment, including host plant and habitat, on canopy fungal communities and found only small effects, …

Summary Data Number of Taxa: 35 Species, in 28 Genera, 23 Families, and 12 Orders. Description The bryophytes are an informal group that is composed of three divisions of non-vascular plants: the liverworts, hornworts, and mosses. Of these, the mosses are the most familiar to most people, but the three groups are similar in appearance, and differ only in their reproductive structures. All bryophytes lack specialized tissues for transporting resources (i.e., vascular tissue); hence, they are characteristically small in stature. Additionally, bryophytes do not produce flowers or seeds; rather, reproduction is through spores. Bryophytes have received relatively little investigation at …
