Crop yield is critical for human nutrition, yet the underlying machinery that ultimately determines yield potential is still not understood. Crop productivity under ideal conditions is determined by the efficiency with which plants intercept light, convert it into chemical energy, translocate photosynthates and convert these to storage products in harvestable organs (Zhu et al., 2010). In many crops, sucrose is the primary form for translocation inside the conduit (i.e. the phloem). A combination of SWEETmediated efflux from phloem parenchyma and subsequent secondary active sucrose import by SUT sucrose/H+ symporters is thought to create the driving force for pressure gradient-driven …

There is widespread agreement that agricultural antibiotic resistance should be reduced, however, it is unclear from the available literature what an appropriate target for reduction would be. Organic farms provide a unique opportunity to disentangle questions of agricultural antibiotic drug use from questions of antibiotic resistance in the soil. In this study, soil was collected from 12 certified organic farms in Nebraska, evaluated for the presence of tetracycline and sulfonamide resistance genes (n = 15 targets), and correlated to soil physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Tetracycline and sulfonamide antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were found in soils from all 12 …

Field trials are commonly used to estimate the effects of different factors on crop yields. In the present study, we followed an alternative approach to identify factors that explain field-to-field yield variation, which consisted of farmer survey data, a spatial framework, and multiple statistical procedures. This approach was used to identify management factors with strongest association with on-farm soybean yield variation in the US North Central (NC) region. Field survey data, including yield and management information, were collected over two crop growing seasons (2014 and 2015) from rainfed and irrigated soybean fields (total of 3568 field-year observations). Fields were grouped …

Background: Volvox carteri f. nagariensis is a model taxon that has been studied extensively at the cellular and molecular level. The most distinctive morphological attribute of V. carteri f. nagariensis within V. carteri is the production of sexual male spheroids with only a 1:1 ratio of somatic cells to sperm packets or androgonidia (sperm packet initials). However, the morphology of male spheroids of V. carteri f. nagariensis has been examined only in Japanese strains. In addition, V. carteri f. nagariensis has heterothallic sexuality; male and female sexes are determined by the sex-determining chromosomal region or mating-type locus composed of a …

Winter Surveys Of Cotinus Obovatus (American Smoketree) In The Ozark Mountains, Gary R. Graves
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Cotinus obovatus (American smoketree) is a rare deciduous tree with a relictual distribution in southeastern North America. Efforts to map its fine-scale geographic distribution in the Ozark Mountains have been limited to the growing season when the distinctive blooming panicles and foliage facilitate detection in hardwood-cedar woodlands. I describe the physiognomic traits of leafless C. obovatus that permit effective population mapping in winter landscapes. Clumped growth and diagonally leaning stems facilitate detection at a distance. Bark texture, twig morphology, and sap odor confirm the identity of the tree at close range.

Assessing Spatio-Temporal Patterns Of Forest Decline Across A Diverse Landscape In The Klamath Mountains Using A 28-Year Landsat Time-Series Analysis, Drew S. Bost
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Rates of tree mortality in California and the Pacific Northwest have greatly increased in recent years, driven largely by pest and pathogen outbreaks as well as the effects of hotter, warmer droughts. While there have been a multitude of regional-scale assessments of mortality and forest decline, landscape-level studies are necessary to better identify forests that are most vulnerable to decline and to anticipate future changes. This need is particularly notable in the remote and little-studied mountains of northwest California, which are renowned for their diverse, heterogeneous vegetation types. A recent observation of elevated levels of Shasta red fir (Abies …

Jeweled Spider Flies (Eulonchus Tristis) Are Important Pollinators Of Iris Bracteata, A Rare Siskiyou Mountain Endemic, Jean-Paul E. Ponte
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Little is known about the pollination biology of the Pacific Coast Irises (Iris: series Californicae, hereafter PCI), especially who visits and pollinates their flowers. In general, Iris flowers are considered bee-pollinated, however, flies in the genus Eulonchus (Acroceridae) are known to visit some PCI members. Therefore, I assessed the relative importance of Eulonchus and other insect visitors to the pollination of a rare PCI species native to the Siskiyou Mountains, I. bracteata.
Methods. I quantified pollinator importance for all flower visitors at sites in northern California and southern Oregon as the product of average visit rate and …

Determination of in-season N requirement for corn (Zea mays L.) is challenging due to interactions of genotype, environment, and management. Machine learning (ML), with its predictive power to tackle complex systems, may solve this barrier in the development of locally based N recommendations. The objective of this study was to explore application of ML methodologies to predict economic optimum nitrogen rate (EONR) for corn using data from 47 experiments across the US Corn Belt. Two features, a water table adjusted available water capacity (AWCwt) and a ratio of in-season rainfall to AWCwt (RAWCwt), were …
A Comparison Of Logistic Regression And Maximum Entropy For Distribution Modeling Of Range Plant Species (A Case Study In Rangelands Of Western Taftan, Southeastern Iran), Hossein Piri Sahragard, Majid Ajorlo
Turkish Journal of Botany
This study aimed to compare the efficiency of logistic regression and maximum entropy models for distribution modelling of plant species habitats in the rangelands of western Taftan, southeastern Iran. Vegetation cover was sampled using a systematic-randomized method. Soils were sampled at 0?30 and 30?60 cm depths through digging of eight soil profiles. The agreement between predictive maps generated by models with documented maps of habitats indicated that logistic regression was able to predict the distribution of Artemisia aucheri and Artemisia sieberi habitats at excellent (kappa value = 0.95) and weak (kappa value = 0.39) levels, respectively. On the other hand, …

Evaluation Of Photosynthesis Process Under Drought-Stress Condition Of Chromosome Segment Substitution Line Populations With ‘Khao Dawk Mali 105’ Rice Genetic Background For Drought-Responsive Gene Identification And Characterization, Kansinee Hungsaprug
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research aims to evaluate the photosynthesis-related parameters in chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSL), containing drought tolerant region from DH212 in a ‘KDML105’ genetic background. Screening at seedling stage indicated that CSSL4 was more tolerant to drought stress than ‘KDML105’ with the higher maximum quantum yield of Photosystem II (Fv/Fm). At vegetative stage, CSSL4 tended to have the higher level of light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PNmax), stomatal conductance (gs), electron transport rate (ETR) and effective quantum yield of photosystem II photochemistry (FPSII), when compared to the ‘KDML105’ after 9 days of water withholding. Moreover, the flag leaves of CSSL4 and …
