A Review Of The Wheat Stem Sawfly, Cephus Cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae), Bethany Thomas
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae) is a native stem-mining insect pest of significant economic importance within the Northern Great Plains of the United States and the prairie provinces of Canada (Criddle, 1923). Cephus cinctus adult females specifically attack large-stemmed grasses, originally feral and later adapted to cultivated grasses, with dryland wheat, Triticum aestivum L. (Poaceae), as the most notable host (Morrill & Kushnak, 1996). As all but two weeks of the sawfly’s lifecycle is contained within a host-grass, understanding the ecological history, biological interactions, and economic impacts between C. cinctus and T. aestivum is …

Comparison Of Insecticide And Trap Crop Management Practices For The Control Of Acalymma Vittatum (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In Cucumbers, Keely Wright
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma vittatum (F.)) is a specialist herbivore pest, feeding on plants in the Cucurbitaceae family across North America. Adult beetles migrate into cucurbit fields from the field edges to feed on the emerged plant parts. Control methods can include insecticides, cultural practices, and some biological control species, or a combination of multiple methods, each having their own advantages and disadvantages. A push-pull trap crop management system using blue hubbard squash (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne) and nasturtiums was established and compared to a lambda-cyhalothrin (Matador 120EC) foliar insecticide control approach in a cucumber crop. Lambda-cyhalothrin, applied …

Morphological And Genetic Analysis Of The Root System In Two American Grapevines (Vitis Species), Parinaz Mohtasebi
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The North American grapes species Vitis rupestris Scheele and Vitis riparia Michx have been the pillars of rootstock breeding for many decades. Though a large body of viticultural knowledge has been accumulated on their impact on grafted scions, the genetic basis of their root system architecture (RSA) has received limited scientific attention. In this study, I generated and analyzed adventitious root systems from dormant cuttings of 22 V. riparia and 19 V. rupestris accessions, as well as 162 interspecific F1 hybrid progeny from a cross between V. rupestris (♀) and V. riparia (♂). I photographed the roots and then extracted …

This paper presents a creative research project that introduced musical instruments in an outdoor setting to infants and toddlers ages 0-to-3 years old. It was grounded in research suggesting that music plays a vital component in expanding development in the early childhood years, helping to promote learning across many domains. This project began with a survey distributed to 7 infant and toddler classroom educators, after which responses were analyzed for themes regarding perceived infant interests. Subsequent observations were conducted to evaluate the best fit for the implementation of an outdoor experiential music space. Based on the findings, a developmentally appropriate …

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Obesity affects adults in the United States, leading to chronic diseases and reduced well-being. Time-Restricted Feeding (TRF) is a type of dietary intervention lacking current data regarding the effectiveness on facets of well-being. This study’s objective was to determine the effect of time-restricted feeding supplemented with whey protein isolate on food intake, sleep, and mood in overweight or obese adults. Nineteen participants were randomly assigned to the control or experimental group: 1) control, TRF, and 2) experimental, TRF with whey protein supplementation. Participants followed the assigned dietary intervention for 12 weeks. Every 4 weeks (baseline, week 4, week 8, and …

Identifying Optimum Germination Temperatures And Analysis Weights In Seed Testing For Stiff Goldenrod (Solidago Rigida) And River Bulrush (Bolboschoenus Fluviatilis), Rachel Geary
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Federal and state seed laws require seed lots offered for sale to be tested and labeled with the appropriate information before they can be sold. Those tests are conducted in seed testing labs all around the world. In the United States, accredited seed testing labs follow the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) Rules for Testing Seeds to provide information for labeling. The rules lack instructions for weights and germination for many native species. Stiff goldenrod (Solidago rigida) and river bulrush (Bolboschoenus fluviatilis) are two species that lack any information required for testing. When seed testing labs use correct weights …

Genome-Wide Association Studies And Advanced Genomic Selection Strategies: Towards The Optimization Of Oat (Avena Sativa L) Breeding, Girma Ayana
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oats are important cereal crops worldwide, primarily valued for their nutritional and health benefits. The primary goal of oat breeding programs is to accelerate genetic gain to develop oat varieties with the desired product profiles, with the aim of meeting the needs and expectations of growers, processors, and consumers. Achieving this goal involves conducting extensive and resource-intensive field trials, particularly for traits such as crop yield and grain quality, which are strongly influenced by environmental factors. The availability of cost-effective molecular markers and tools like genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and genomic selection have the potential to accelerate the oat breeding …

Building No-Tillage Maize Nitrogen Recommendation Algorithm That Considers Improvements In Soil Health, Dwarika Bhattarai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In long-term no-till fields, farmers have reported that less N is required to optimize maize (Zea mays L.) yields in long term no-tillage fields than conventional tillage fields. These reductions may be attributed to improved soil health resulting from increasing soil organic matter, higher soil microbial activities, and improved water and nutrient use efficiency. However, the impact of soil health measurements on fertilizer-N requirement has not been determined. The objective of this dissertation was to compare different regional N recommendation models to measured values and develop a maize fertilizer-N recommendation model, using machine learning approaches, that includes adjustments based on …

Tracking Nitrogen Mineralization In The Presence Of Biochar Utilizing Complementary-Method Assays In East Central South Dakota, Andrew Calvin Engel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Understanding soil N transformations in agricultural systems of the Northern Great Plains is crucial for guiding effective soil and nutrient management of this vital cropland. While the use of biochar in agriculture has attracted great attention recently, little has been reported on the seasonal dynamics of soil nitrogen (N) transformation and its response to biochar application. A field experiment was conducted over 2 seasons, spring (6/3/19-6/24/19) and summer (7/26/19-8/16/19), using four treatments or control soil, urea (224 kg N/ha), biochar (46,250 kg/ha), and urea+biochar (224 kg N/ha and 46,250 kg/ha, respectively). The results for both seasons showed biochar had no …
