Deep Vein Thrombosis In Lower Extremity Of A Female Collegiate Volleyball Athlete: A Case Study, Lucas D. Dargo, Kendra Borton, Rachel Roths, Zachary Dougal 2020 Manchester University, North Manchester, IN

Deep Vein Thrombosis In Lower Extremity Of A Female Collegiate Volleyball Athlete: A Case Study, Lucas D. Dargo, Kendra Borton, Rachel Roths, Zachary Dougal

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in deep veins in the body, usually in the lower extremity. DVT is commonly seen in older or hospitalized patients. This case is unique because the patient is a 20-year-old female division III collegiate volleyball athlete, which is not the typical age or population affected by DVT or clotting disorders. The patient presented with swelling, pain, and decreased knee flexion (3/5) and plantarflexion (4/5) strength in her left lower extremity. These impairments reduced her ability to walk or run. The patient’s athletic trainer (AT) initially diagnosed her with a left …

Posterior Glenoid Dysplasia As A Secondary Finding To Labrum Tear And Subscapularis Strain: A Case Study, S. Andrew Cage, Brandon J. Warner, Diana M. Gallegos

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

The purpose of this disablement model case study was to describe the case of a collegiate baseball pitcher suffering from a labral lesion and supraspinatus strain that may have been the result of posterior glenoid dysplasia. Despite gross instability and glenohumeral external rotation weakness, the patient was initially able to continue to pitch. While posterior glenoid dysplasia has been described in literature, there have not been studies that have evaluated soft tissue changes that may be associated with this bony morphology abnormality. In this case, the patient reported to the athletic training staff complaining of pain, tightness, and a “clunking” …

Glp-1 Mediated Diuresis And Natriuresis Are Blunted In Heart Failure And Restored By Selective Afferent Renal Denervation, Kenichi Katsurada, Shyam Sundar Nandi, Hong Zheng, Xuefei Liu, Neeru M. Sharma, Kaushik K. Patel

Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) induces diuresis and natriuresis. Previously we have shown that GLP-1 activates afferent renal nerve to increase efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity that negates the diuresis and natriuresis as a negative feedback mechanism in normal rats. However, renal effects of GLP-1 in heart failure (HF) has not been elucidated. The present study was designed to assess GLP-1-induced diuresis and natriuresis in rats with HF and its interactions with renal nerve activity.

METHODS: HF was induced in rats by coronary artery ligation. The direct recording of afferent renal nerve activity (ARNA) with intrapelvic injection of GLP-1 and total …

The Effects Of The Myokinesthetic System On Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome In The Physically Active: A Case Study, Rodrigo E. Martinez, Evelyn Benitez-Lopez, Lindsey Larkins

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) is a common pathology in physically active people and one of many overuse leg injuries present in weight bearing athletes, with the highest prevalence in runners. Researchers have extensively explored treatment for MTSS, but a long-lasting and effective treatment option has not been established. This case report aimed to explore the effects of The MyoKinesthetic SystemTM (MYK), a form of manual therapy, on two athletes diagnosed with MTSS. Patient one is a 19-year-old male rugby player with a previous history of MTSS, who reported leg pain while running which progressed to constant pain. Patient two …

Squids Use Multiple Escape Jet Patterns Throughout Ontogeny, Carly A. York, Ian K. Bartol, Paul S. Krueger, Joseph T. Thompson 2020 Old Dominion University

Squids Use Multiple Escape Jet Patterns Throughout Ontogeny, Carly A. York, Ian K. Bartol, Paul S. Krueger, Joseph T. Thompson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Throughout their lives, squids are both predators and prey for a multitude of animals, many of which are at the top of ocean food webs, making them an integral component of the trophic structure of marine ecosystems. The escape jet, which is produced by the rapid expulsion of water from the mantle cavity through a funnel, is central to a cephalopod's ability to avoid predation throughout its life. Although squid undergo morphological and behavioral changes and experience remarkably different Reynolds number regimes throughout their development, little is known about the dynamics and propulsive efficiency of escape jets throughout ontogeny. We …

Exogenous Fluid Delivery Schedule And Composition On Fluid Balance, Physiologic Strain, And Substrate Use In The Heat, Alejandro M. Rosales

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Introduction: Wildfire suppression is characterized by high total energy expenditures and water turnover rates. Hydration position stands outline hourly fluid intake rates. However, dose interval remains ambiguous. We aimed to determine the effects of micro- and bolus-dosing water (MW, BW) or carbohydrate-electrolyte (MCE, BCE) solutions on fluid balance, heat stress, and carbohydrate oxidation during extended thermal exercise. Methods: Males (n=12), in a repeated measures cross-over design, completed 4, 120-minute treadmill trials (1.3 m.s-1, 5% grade, 33°C, 30%RH) wearing a USFS uniform and 15kg pack. Fluid delivery approximated losses calculated from a pre-experiment familiarization …

Genetic And Cellular Models For The Study Of Ptk2b And Adam10 In Adaptive Thermogenesis And Metabolism, Jared S. Farrar 2020 Virginia Commonwealth University

Genetic And Cellular Models For The Study Of Ptk2b And Adam10 In Adaptive Thermogenesis And Metabolism, Jared S. Farrar

Theses and Dissertations

In a cellular model, we demonstrate that the non-receptor protein tyrosine kinase 2 beta (PTK2B) plays a critical role in mouse cultured beige adipocyte differentiation. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knock-out of Ptk2b results in non-differentiating white adipocytes and differentiated beige adipocytes with significantly reduced thermogenic gene and protein expression, enlarged lipid droplet size, and altered mitochondrial respiration. Together, these data in a cell culture system provide evidence for a role of PTK2B in the differentiation of mouse beige adipocytes.

In the process of developing a new mouse model utilizing the adipocyte selective Adipoq-Cre transgenic mouse, strong genetic linkage between a gene …

Focal Augmentation Of Somatostatin Interneuron Function And Subsequent Circuit Effects In Developmentally Malformed, Epileptogenic Cortex, Nicole Ekanem 2020 Virginia Commonwealth University

Focal Augmentation Of Somatostatin Interneuron Function And Subsequent Circuit Effects In Developmentally Malformed, Epileptogenic Cortex, Nicole Ekanem

Theses and Dissertations

Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) is a common clinical sequela of developmental cortical malformations such as polymicrogyria. Unfortunately, much remains unknown about the aberrant GABA-mediated circuit alterations that underlie DRE's onset and persistence in this context. To address this knowledge gap, we utilized the transcranial freeze lesion model in optogenetic mice lines (Somatostatin (SST)-Cre or Parvalbumin (PV)-Cre x floxed channelrhodopsin-2) to dissect features of the SST, PV, and pyramidal neuron microcircuit that are potentially associated with DRE. Investigations took place within developmental microgyria’s known pathological substrate, the adjoined and epileptogenic paramicrogyral region (PMR). As well, microcircuit relationships within the previously unexplored range …

Synaptic Homeostasis At The Drosophila Neuromuscular Junction, Andrew Powers 2020 University at Albany, State University of New York

Synaptic Homeostasis At The Drosophila Neuromuscular Junction, Andrew Powers

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Synaptic homeostasis is a specialized form of synaptic plasticity that maintains synaptic strength within normal parameters. The synapse must regulate its activity both during growth and in response to repeated stimulation. Much of the study of synaptic homeostasis has focused on presynaptic modifications to the quantal content. There is, however, evidence of postsynaptic regulation as an important form of synaptic homeostasis. To further investigate the ability of the synapse to make homeostatic modifications to its function we utilized the Drosophila neuromuscular junction (NMJ) as our model system. To examine the regulation of excitation at the NMJ during growth we observed …

Sympathetic Neural Responses To Acute Thermal Sensations, Hannah August Cunningham 2020 Michigan Technologial University

Sympathetic Neural Responses To Acute Thermal Sensations, Hannah August Cunningham

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The influence of thermal stimuli on the sympathetic nervous system is variable and largely depends on the change in temperature and timing of the stimuli. Core temperature changes yield increased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) while changes in skin temperature yield variable MSNA responses. The MSNA responses to acute heating or cooling sensations remains unclear. Twenty-three participants (11 women, 12 men; age 24±1 years, BMI 26±1 kg/m2) underwent a thermal protocol that included four trials each of cool sensation threshold, warm sensation threshold, and heat pain (12 total trials). Continuous blood pressure (finger plethysmography), heart rate (electrocardiography), and …

Heat For The Masses: Thermal Ecology Of The Western Tent Caterpillar, Victoria Dahlhoff 2020 University of Montana, Missoula

Heat For The Masses: Thermal Ecology Of The Western Tent Caterpillar, Victoria Dahlhoff

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

A unique feature of some gregarious, colonial insects is their ability to create external structures that alter environmental conditions for the entire (often family) group. A combination of physical alteration of local microhabitats and behavioral thermoregulation allows many of these animals to actively control their body temperatures, which allows them to regulate energy use and metabolism in variable thermal environments. Here I describe mechanisms of microhabitat modification and thermal regulation in the western tent caterpillar, Malacosoma californicum pluviale. Tent caterpillars build communal silk tents, whose temperatures can rise substantially above ambient air temperature. I experimentally manipulated colony sizes and examined …

The Effects Of Chronic Mild Stress On Gabaergic System In The Paraventricular Nucleus Of Hypothalamus And Cardiac Alterations In Male Rats, Janpen Bangsumruaj 2020 Graduate School

The Effects Of Chronic Mild Stress On Gabaergic System In The Paraventricular Nucleus Of Hypothalamus And Cardiac Alterations In Male Rats, Janpen Bangsumruaj

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Stress is associated with cardiovascular diseases, and it is the number one cause of death in the world. The high sympathetic activity is a known trigger for the cardiac syndrome, and it can be implied by the reduction of heart rate variability (HRV). However, it is not known whether chronic mild stress (CMS) animal model, developed to mimic daily life stress in human could induce any cardiac alterations or cardiac autonomic control. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of CMS on cardiac autonomic activity, cardiac indices and GABAergic system in the PVN. It was hypothesized that CMS …

Early Detection Of Asthma Via Enhanced Resolution Of Small Airways Using Ultra-Low Frequency Impulse Oscillometry, Christopher M. Aguilar 2020 University of Texas at El Paso

Early Detection Of Asthma Via Enhanced Resolution Of Small Airways Using Ultra-Low Frequency Impulse Oscillometry, Christopher M. Aguilar

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Examination of lung function for diagnosis and monitoring of diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma can be performed with a variety of pulmonary function testing (PFT) techniques. The most commonly prescribed of these procedures are spirometry and whole-body plethysmography. However, these active participation tests depend on forced breathing maneuvers, may be physically exhausting, might not produce enough information, and are susceptible to being subject-dependent. In contrast, passive PFT approaches such as the forced oscillation technique (FOT) and the impulse oscillometry system (IOS) are increasingly being utilized for measuring lung mechanics because they require only minimal participation, …

Predictors Of Work Economy In Structural Firefighters, Maxwell Steele Norris 2020 University of Kentucky

Predictors Of Work Economy In Structural Firefighters, Maxwell Steele Norris

Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion

The purpose of this study was to investigate a novel work economy metric to quantify firefighter physical ability and identify physical fitness and anthropometric correlates of work economy. Physical fitness and anthropometric measurements were taken on 19 incumbent structural firefighters (Age: 35.0±7.1 yr, Body mass: 87.5±13.1 kg). Firefighters performed a timed maximal effort simulated fireground test (SFGT) in personal protective equipment. SFGT air depletion was represented by change in cylinder pressure. Work economy was quantified as: (1/(SFGT completion time x air depletion))x104. Bivariate and multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify anthropometric and physical fitness predictors of …
