The effects of heartwood and sapwood on kraft pulp properties of Pinus nigra J.F.Arnold. and Abies bornmuelleriana Mattf. were investigated. The differences in terms of chemical composition and fiber properties between the heartwood and sapwood of these species were also examined. Heartwood had more holocellulose and extractive compared to sapwood. Moreover, heartwood fiber length was shorter than that of sapwood. Kraft cookings of heartwood and sapwood each species were separately done under fixed cooking conditions. Geographical variation in soluble sugar concentrations in seeds from oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) trees of different origins in Turkey was determined using high performance liquid chromatography. The results demonstrated that the most significant soluble sugars, in order of importance, were sucrose, glucose, and fructose. All free sugars varied significantly (P < 0.05) within and among populations. In general, both total and soluble sugar levels tended to be higher in northern populations compared to southern ones. Cluster and discriminant analyses divided seed sources into 3 distinct groups corresponding to a north, south, and west division of oriental beech populations.

The multiplex polymerase chain reaction (MPCR) is a variant of conventional PCR in which 2 or more target sequences are amplified by more than 1 pair of primers in a single reaction mixture. In this study, an efficient MPCR assay was established and optimized for the quick detection of Agrobacterium-derived plant transformants. The neomycin phosphotransferase II gene fragment (nptII; target gene) and the chromosomal virulence gene ChvA fragment of Agrobacterium tumefaciens (external reference gene) were amplified simultaneously with 2 pairs of corresponding primers. Table grapes (Vitis vinifera) of the cultivar Shahroudi were coated with 0.5% or 1% chitosan and then stored at 0 °C for 60 days. Shelf-life qualitative traits including rachis and berry appearance and berry cracking, shattering, decay, browning, acceptability, and flavor were evaluated. Treated berries showed less weight loss, decay, browning, shattering, and cracking. Microsatellite regions in DNA fragments of Gossypium arboreum were explored and PCR products 500-800 bp long were analyzed for genomic simple sequence repeats (gSSRs). From 39 segments, 23 short gSSRs were identified; on average they occurred every 1.6 kb. Primers were used to amplify fragments from 18 diploid species representing 6 diploid genomes and 1 tetraploid species, G. hirsutum (AD). The phylogeny of diploid genomes was subsequently determined. Hypericum triquetrifolium is a promising medicinal plant from eastern Europe and the Mediterranean area. The present study was conducted to determine ontogenetic and morphogenetic variation of chlorogenic acid, rutin, hyperoside, isoquercetin, quercitrin, and quercetin content in this species. The wild-growing and greenhouse-grown plants were harvested at vegetative, floral budding, full flowering, fresh fruiting, and mature fruiting stages and were dissected into stem, leaf, and reproductive tissues, which were dried separately and subsequently assayed for bioactive compounds by high performance liquid chromatography. This study was designed to evaluate the response of 2 wild shrubs, Calotropis procera and Suaeda aegyptiaca, to salinity (100% seawater), drought, and waterlogging stresses. The 90-day-old plants were subjected to the stress treatments for 3 weeks, and growth and some physiological parameters were evaluated. The total plant dry mass of C. procera plants was reduced by 40%, whereas S. aegyptiaca was not significantly affected by salinity stress. Water deficit and waterlogging stresses significantly reduced the total dry mass of both species. Under all conditions, the root/shoot ratio in C. procera was 3-fold higher than in S. aegyptiaca.
