This study is an extension and refinement of a previous report on the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA) by Perry P. Chang. The present study makes three major changes in Chang's report, in that it obtains output and value added of industries in the Omaha area, exports and imports of the industries, certain income multipliers, forecasts of output in the Omaha area. for 1975 and 1990, and compares the three results with Chang's.

Reservoirs are built to control floods, provide water for irrigation and municipal supply, generate electric power, augment low flows for navigation and water quality control, and provide improved fishing and recreation opportunity. A reservoir is justified if the benefit it provides to society exceeds the cost to develop it. Much research has been done to determine the benefit of a water resources development to society as a whole. Some research has explored the benefit of such a facility to a region. Very little research exists on the effects of a reservoir on the immediately surrounding area.

This is the third of a series of continuing studies in the attempt to ascertain Omaha's retail trade area. The method utilized, as in the past, is that of recording license plate prefix numbers at the three major and two minor shopping points within the Omaha SMSA. Emphasis is placed upon the three major shopping points, Downtown, Crossroads and Westroads, for they are the best indicators of the regional focus of Omaha. The present report aims to show the procedures and findings of an input-output study for the Omaha Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). This study is based on national technical co-efficients and some simplifying assumptions, with 1963 as the base year. While it is provisional in the sense that this study may be improved through the use of additional data and relaxation of certain assumptions, this report will show some interesting aspects of the area's economy and trends of its development. The milk marketing area of Omaha, shown on Figure 1, includes all or parts of 12 Nebraska counties and 20 counties in western Iowa. Normally 80 percent of Omaha's fluid milk needs comes from the region outlined as Omaha's milk marketing area. Southwest of Omaha, the major milk producing counties of Gage, Jefferson and Lancaster are part of the Lincoln milk marketing area. On September 29, 1967, Armour and. Company announced that effective six months from that date, the Omaha Armour plant would be closed, displacing a labor force of approximately 2, 200 workers. This statement, announcing the closing of the third meatpacking firm in Omaha within the past two years, was startling and indicative of far- reaching consequences for Omaha, its people and economy. This is the second in a series of three surveys relating social participation and life satisfaction as reported by residents of five high-rise apartment buildings in the city of Omaha, These buildings (towers) are available to low-income senior citizens, and are operated under the direction of the Omaha Housing Authority. Recreational facilities and activities are provided by the City of Omaha Parks, Recreation and Public Property Department and it was at their request that this study was undertaken by the Urban Studies Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

This study represents the second in a series of license plate surveys to aid in a delimitation of Omaha's retail trade area. 1 The method utilized was a tabulation of license plate numbers at the major shopping points in Omaha, namely, the parking lots of Brandeis downtown, Crossroads and Westroads. Discussion is limited to two of the three large centers because this is the initial year for the opening of Westroads. Other shopping centers surveyed were Southroads, Skag-Way, GEM, Gulf Mart, and the Center.

One of the critical problems in the delineation of the Omaha Trade Area to be solved by the geographer is the selection of the agricultural hinterland of Omaha. A series of maps, based on the 1959 and 1964 Census of Agriculture reports were developed. These basic maps were correlated with known data concerning agricultural shipments to the Omaha market. The result was the definition of an agricultural core region centered on Omaha.

There are many limitations and statistical uncertainties in making a full interpretation of the Omaha Trade Area, but we plan to go as far as we can to bring together the commonly used indicators that show the sphere of influence of a major trade center. A number of indicators, such as retail sales, newspaper circulation, correspondent banks, grain shipments, etc., will be mapped individually. Then, for the final analysis, a composite map will be constructed to show the area of overall dominance by Omaha.

During the Twentieth Century, the growth of population in the Omaha SMSA has been greatest in the post-war period. In the decade between 1950 and 1960, for example, the growth approximated 25 per cent. Much of this increase has resulted from cycles of residential construction in the fringes of the urbanized area, a situation known as urban sprawl. Between March and May, 1965, 1112 families residing in nineteen census tracts in the City of Omaha were interviewed through the facilities of the Urban Studies Center of the Municipal University of Omaha with respect to various characteristics of their income, composition, and opinion as these items related to understanding the status of the econornica1ly underprivileged in their neighborhoods.
