Intercity Industrial Tax Comparisons, 1971-1973, Ralph H. Todd

This study presents the results of efforts to update the intercity comparisons of state and local taxes on manufacturing firms as reported in a 1972 study entitled "Intercity Comparison of Taxes on lndustry." The intent of this study is to determine the changing tax position of Omaha relative to other cities since 1971. Recommendations for improving the attractiveness of Omaha as a site for industrial location are provided in the final section.

Ecological Assessment Of Influences In The Development Of Gifted Young Children, Laura M. Piper

The home environment of eight gifted and eight nongifted children, matched for age and sex, was studied. The mothers of the children were given a structured interview and their responses were rated on six environmental variables hypothesized to be related to the development of intelligence and social ability. The study was designed to evaluate the assessment instrument and to obtain correlational data between the home environment and certain child development aspects. Correlations were significant on five of the six variables.

This thesis presents an approach to the study of the population distribution for a county through the use of an historical atlas. Prior to the compilation of the atlas, suggestions for sources of information and background data necessary to understand why changes took place were examined. The historical atlas of population distribution used Kittitas County, Washington, for the period from 1890 to 1970 as an example.

Recommendations emphasized further study of factors which have affected population distribution.

Postcensal Population Estimates For Oregon Counties: An Evaluation Of Selected Methods, Guy Jeffrey Barnes

This study evaluates the results of three widely used methods for preparing postcensa estimates of counties. The methods are Census Bureau’s Component Method II, the Ratio Correlation Method and the Bogue-Duncan Composite Method. Hypotheses based upon empirical generalizations from previous comparative studies are tested. Statistical tools used are Average Percent Deviation (without regard to sign) and Standard Deviation of Percent Errors. Directional bias and frequency of extreme error are also examined. Evaluations are conducted of the accuracy of the estimates for groups of counties stratified in terms of density and growth rate dimensions. In January of 1972, the staff and resident representatives of the Worcester Model Cities neighborhood contracted the Survey Research Program to work with them to conduct a survey of neighborhood residents. The purpose of the project was to collect data that would assist those in the Model Cities area to systematically measure residents' perceptions and feelings, to identify problems and needs, to plan programs, and, perhaps, at a later date to have a basis against which to measure change.

This study provides an analysis of market conditions for subsidized dwelling on its for a two year period from September 1971 to September 1973. It emerged because of the strong and prevailing belief that there exists today in the Omaha Housing Market Area (HMAl an urgent and unmet need for a large number of safe, decent dwelling units available at prices or rents that low and moderate income families can afford. In spite of the recent emphasis on minority group problems, there are still significant gaps in the store of knowledge about the American Indian in the urban setting. Omaha is not unique. Much empirical data can be found in the census figures, but it must be extracted and synthesized before it becomes meaningful. Even so, the picture of the urban Indian in Omaha is far from complete. If realistic solutions to the problems confronting urban Indians are to be found, a great deal more empirical research·should precede and accompany the development of programs. Statements about the relative proportions of blacks and whites owning their homes are not infrequently stated in dogmatic fashion, even though not supported by "hard data." One possible use of the data contained in this report is to test hypothetical statements about race and home ownership. The data herein are all derived from Bureau of the Census computer tapes -- it will be assumed here that the available census figures approximate "reality. "

Changes in Omaha population from 1960 to 1970 have been more areal than real. While significant spatial changes of population may be noted, the rate of population growth during the decade can only be described as moderate. This is a conclusion from initial output from the U.S. Bureau of the Census' 1970 First Count computer tapes.

The census computer tapes provide population and housing data in more detail and in finer geographic areas than the traditional printed reports. In addition, since they are the medium through which the printed reports are generated, they provide valuable advance data to census users.

This research project was focused on elderly people and their living arrangements in an attempt to discover whether elderly people would prefer to live alone or with other elderly persons. If it was found that the elderly people interviewed would like roommates, then this would provide information which would be helpful in assessing the need for and determining the feasibility of a roommate service for elderly people.
