As a unit the American region known as the Great Plains suffered net migration losses in each of the five census periods prior to 1970. American Migratory Patterns between 1970 and 1976 began to reflect a growing tendency for metropolitan counties (SMSA's)1 to suffer net migration losses and for nonmetropolitan counties to record net migration gains. The nonmetropolitan counties which had the largest net gains were those which are contiguous to an SMSA and which thus form a metropolitan fringe. The purpose of this report is to present an analysis of the survey data collected by the Center for Applied Urban Research concerning Nebraska women and their participation in the labor force.

The survey, conducted in November and December, 1978, involved a random telephone survey of 1,640 women between the ages of 18 and 64. The survey focused on three broad areas: 1) current labor force characteristics and other questions related to current work, 2) attitudes and perceptions related to work and working women, and 3) needs for·training and information. In recent years the administration of criminal justice in this country has become increasingly dominated by the process known as "plea bargaining." In plea bargaining a defendant waives the right to trial by pleading guilty in return for certain advantages offered by the state. The state benefits in terms of the time and money saved by avoiding a trial. The practice is so pervasive that in many jurisdictions fewer than 10 percent of the criminal defendants ever stand trial.

A Poison Control Center needs to continually update its impact on the community it serves. At the Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center, a telephone survey was performed to ascertain baseline data for ongoing poison awareness programs. Our data shows that 36.6% of the population would call the PCC in the case of acute poisoning. There is a need to stress that the PCC is not only a center for information but also for treatment at home. Distribution of the PCC phone number to be attached to the phone needs to be increased. Many people obtained the phone number through time …

Continuing increases in leisure time, income, greater mobility, levels of education, and general health have whetted and nourished the American appetite for outdoor recreation activities. Statistics indicate that almost every American engages in one or more recreation activities when he or she is at all able. Measured by the number of recreation occasions, American outdoor recreation activity increased by 53 percent between 1960 and 1965. From 1965 to 1980, it will increase by another 59 percent.
