Pottawattamie County, Iowa (Map 1) has been unable to maintain the growth experienced during the decade from 1950 to 1960. The 1980 Census showed a count of 86,500, a loss of 491 or .6 percent from the 1970 Census. (See Table 1.)

The Bemis Park Crime Survey was devised to give the residents of Bemis Park systematic information on the extent of crime and victimization in their neighborhood. The Bemis Park Neighborhood Association requested this survey, and the residents were active participants in it.

Social and economic changes during the past two decades have contributed to a substantial increase in the number of women participating in the American work force. The women's movement, for example, has increased the social acceptability of married women working outside the home and has raised single and married women's professional expectations and opportunities. From an economic perspective, inflation has probably motivated more married women to seek employment, and, at least until the past few years, the American economy has been healthy enough to provide jobs for most of them.

Demographic change in Sarpy County has been dramatic for the past several decades. From each period from 1950 through 1970 the county at least doubled in population. In 1980 however, with the 1970 base number of 66,200, the dramatic rate of gain of the previous decades simply could not be maintained. (See Table 1.) The recorded growth in the 1970's nevertheless was very significant with a gain of 19,815 or 29.9 percent, numerically larger than the 1950-1960 increase.

The following is a summary of alternative attempts made to identify manufacturing industries which have the greatest potential for industrial development in the Omaha area. The methods utilized were similar to that used in the first report submitted to the Market Strategy Committee of the Economic Development Committee. Some major revisions were made on the previous report to produce comparative matrices utilizing additional criterion variables and differing levels of weighted importance placed on selected criterion variables.

In the spring of 1980, the Nebraska Mortgage Finance Fund (NMFF) through the issuance of bonds made 150 million dollars available to be used by first-time low and moderate income home buyers. This money was to provide these buyers an opportunity to purchase "sanitary, safe, and uncrowded" dwellings.

This study was initiated to demonstrate how declining neighborhoods can be revitalized through the cooperation and Partnership of local residents, financial institutions, and local government. The Neighborhood II Conservation Plan assumes that interested and informed residents can plan their own environment just as they plan their own family affairs and budget their incomes. The plan further assumes that residents working together as a team can revitalize their neighborhood at the point of decline. This study pursues various approaches to neighborhood preservation which may be useful to other cities.

This report examines changes in the population of the six YMCA branch areas in Omaha and Council Bluffs between 1970 and 1980, as well as changes in the racial/ethnic composition of the areas. For the purposes of this report, an area of one mile radius surrounding each Omaha office and the Council Bluffs office was studied. All census tracts falling within the one mile radius were included. The locations of the Omaha branch areas are shown in Map 1. Many French-speaking people came to the Pacific Northwest. Although most came from Quebec, some traveled from as far away as France, Belgium and Switzerland. When they arrived in Oregon Territory, a juxtaposition of three cultures merged to form a unique French-speaking community governed by a dominant Western Anglo-American character and a living Indian culture for daily subsistence. Most importantly, the French brought their own traditions from Quebec and France. Also, French individuality became altered upon their arrival and through their necessity to adapt to the strange, unknown wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. In an initial letter, the director of Le·gal Aid stated the purpose of the proposed project:

The majo1· purpose of this study was to develop a data base of projected employment in the Omaha SMSA. The study sought to reveal short-term occupational projections of Omaha employers. Reported growth, decline, and turnover in selected occupations were the key factors considered, and data were also gathered on the educational, training, and experience requirements of employers for entry level positions in occupations studied. This study should meet the needs of administrators, planners, and counselors for information on occupational trends so that they can engage in effective manpower training.

The purpose of this report is to analyze the educational and career aspiration data from a survey of more than 1,000 Fremont High School students. The survey was administered in spring, 1980 and was part of a study on the needs and impact of Metropolitan Technical Community College in Omaha. The Center for Applied Urban Research continued to fulfill its mission of applied research, community service and training during 1980-81. Two major events that took place during the past year have greatly strengthened the ability of CAUR to carry out this mission. In October, CAUR moved into new quarters at the Peter Kiewit Conference Center at 1313 Farnam on the Mall in downtown Omaha. With just over 7,000 square feet of space, CAUR has been able to carry out project activity in a more efficient manner.
