From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. Most communities in Nebraska experienced crease in net taxable sales during the early eighties. Nebraska City's decrease has not been as severe as that in other communities in southeast Nebraska, although the percentage decline was greater than the state average (table 1). This decrease in net taxable sales prompted the Nebraska City Chamber of Commerce and the Business Improvement District Board to commission this market area analysis.

In 1978 when the Population Council formulated a program to learn more about low-income urban women’s access to services, the dearth of information was striking, particularly in contrast to the emerging body of information delineating access to credit, extension, membership in rural institutions, and representation in local governments. Access to services was much less well-defined owing to the diverse cultures that meet in the urban environment, the mobility of city life, and the fluidity of households. The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A large sample of volunteers from a midwestern city chapter of the American Red Cross were studied to identify demographic correlates of the reasons given for volunteering. The findings suggest that the reasons people give for doing volunteer work are conditioned by their age, sex, and marital status. Implications for volunteer programs and future research are discussed.

In Nebraska and elsewhere, individuals with disabilities should be receiving their education, vocational training, and employment in the same schools, training programs, businesses, and industries as individuals without disabilities, Generally, this requires some specific planning on the part of schools, generic job training programs, and employers. Such support may mean a minor modification in the environment, the acquisition of an aide, or financial assistance. By developing these support services, individuals with disabilities will not be limited to the few vocational opportunities offered by most segregated vocational workshops, but they will have access to a variety of career options.

One part of determining the feasibility of a Housing Trust Fund in Nebraska is to estimate the resources available for such a fund. This analysis of available resources focused on four separate sources of potential funding--earnings on sales escrow deposits, earnings on mortgage escrow accounts, earnings on rental security deposits, and earnings from transfer taxes. All figures are based on prevailing practices in Nebraska, and ranges of potential funding are offered because of the use of varying rates of return (interest rates).

This is a monograph about new careers for individuals that society has labeled disabled. It is not, however, about disabilities. Instead, it describes how society can effectively use the unique capabilities of each individual in the work place.

The principles outlined in this monograph could apply to any individual, not just those who have mental, physical, or emotional impairments. We believe that in the future successful career development will be the same for all individuals. Career planning which meets the needs of individuals with severe disabilities is presented as an alternative to the segregated workshop model of· the past.

Today, many youths leave public schools and find that vocational training or employment opportunities are not available.

As we studied these programs, it became clear to us that most of these programs have some intrinsic values and that it would not be practical or advisable for us to evaluate the programs, Instead of rating programs, we selected programs that met at least one of our ten critical factors for program selection, and many of them met several. Our decisions were also based on a desire to present a variety of programs, especially those that seemed to be appropriate for program planners in Nebraska.

Our animal control personnel in Fulton County are running a successful program. We serve a stable population of approximately 600,000 people based on the 1980 census and updated projections. Our area encompasses some 225,000 households. Of those, approximately 143,000 are single family dwellings, 75,000 are of the multiple family variety and some 7,000 fall into other categories. Geographically, the area consists of 50% urban, 40% suburban and about 10% rural. Which is relatively little "true" rural land consisting of agriculture or open woodlands. The Palm Beach County Animal Regulation Division was established in 1970 by the Florida State Legislature through a special act for Palm Beach County. The Division provides primary animal control services for a human population of 652,195 in one of the largest counties east of the Mississippi, encompassing 2,578 square miles.
