Independent living centers (ILCs) provide support services to adults with physical disabilities. Originally created through federal funding, most ILCs serve urban areas, leaving a large rural area and its population unreached by independent living ideas or services. Data on the expansion of the ILC service model to rural areas are presented. The need for further program development is discussed. 0ne third of the U.S. population lives outside of a Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (Korte, 1983) and 26% live in towns with less than 2,500 inhabitants (Bureau of the Census, 1970 as cited in Photiadis & Simoni, 1983). This directory of surveys contains data on families and households in developing countries. The emphasis is on intergenerational linkages as well as conjugal ties and co-residential arrangements. Surveys that do not situate individuals within a family or household context are excluded. Thus, many labor force surveys with data on the employment status and earnings of men and women are not included unless they also collected data on respondents’ children and/or households. The same is true of contraceptive prevalence surveys that limit their attention to women’s reproductive behavior. In 1990, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Co=erce created a study group to examine public elementary and secondary education in Nebraska. The study group was composed of representatives of the business co=unity, educators, and members of the Unicameral. Five work sessions were held to listen to experts discuss the approaches being used by other states to improve education, to discuss the applicability of such approaches to our state, and to identify a set of activities that would assure that pupils throughout Nebraska would be able to compete successfully with other young people in this country and around the world.

Smalltown residents in Nebraska put a high premium on the need for economic development efforts, yet most think their towns' efforts fall short. Some towns, especially the smallest, don't even try to put together a development project. And those that do try often need help of a kind that State and Federal agencies do not offer.
