This paper addresses the issue of neighborhood vitality from the perspective of social capital building. Numerous studies have shown that social capital - a complex of networks, norms, and social trust that promotes citizens involvement in local affairs - is crucial for the continuous well-being of communities. Among many political, economic, and cultural factors influencing social capital, the spatial dimension is most often overlooked. Yet the accessibility of places promoting social interactions and interpersonal communication between local residents should have a direct effect on the vitality of a neighborhood. The book is tantalizingly titled, promising to draw together between the covers of a single volume empirical analyses of several key notions, namely, space, culture, power, identity and globalization. It is attractive precisely for its empirical orientation, especially towards several cities that do not often enter the English language literature, particularly Istanbul, Cairo and the former East German cities. Concerned with globalization and localization, the book has a particular emphasis on social and cultural dimensions while situating the discussions within the larger networks and circuits of global trade and finance.

Within the context of globalisation that confronts the world today, I aim in this paper to illustrate one particular state's attempts at constructing a 'nation' amidst efforts to encourage its citizens to globalise, actions which are ostensibly, or at least, potentially, contradictory; and to analyse how these citizens who became transmigrants construct and negotiate their sense of 'nation' and national identity. Specifically, my empirical questions centre on Singaporean transmigrants working in China. I ask the following questions. This paper explores public participation as determined through three land use planning case studies in Clark County, Nevada. Chapter One outlines the existing conditions for public participation and introduces a set of questions to be explored. Chapter Two defines the scope and methodology employed in the research. Chapter Three is a literature review for levels of public participation. The next Chapter discusses statutory requirements for planning and formal public participation. This paper reviews research on deathscapes, particularly by geographers in the last decade, and argues that many of the issues addressed reflect the concerns that have engaged cultural geographers during the same period. In particular, necrogeographical research reveals the relevance of deathscapes to theoretical arguments about the social constructedness of race, class, gender, nation and nature; the ideological underpinnings of landscapes, the contestation of space, the centrality of place and the multiplicity of meanings. This paper therefore highlights how the focus on one particular form of landscape reveals macro-cultural geographical research interests and trends.

This project examines Holgate Lake. Despite its natural hazard characteristics, the Holgate Lake area has not been immune to development pressure. Holgate Lake is an intermittent water body that forms when groundwater levels rise. Historical accounts show that the lake has formed at many different times in the last century. Because the lake fluctuates with the groundwater level, it is not necessarily present from year to year. As the area has developed, more and more people built in the location of the natural lakebed when the water was not present. When the lake level returned in the 1960's flooding of …

This year's report concentrates on recent legal developments concerning regulation of the location of "adult entertainment businesses." Such regulations raise serious constitutional issues because the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of expression extends to non-obscene sexually oriented media. The U.S. Supreme Court, however, has established that local government may single out adult businesses for special regulatory treatment in the form of locational restrictions if the local government can show a substantial public interest in regulating such businesses unrelated to the suppression of speech and if the regulations allow for "reasonable alternative avenues of communication," which essentially translates into a reasonable …

Nonprofit organizations play a pivotal role in recent efforts to devolve public responsibilities to lower levels of government and other sectors. The capacity of these organizations to serve as the public safety net, however, has come under question. This multiphase research project focused on the impact of welfare reform on community-based nonprofits in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The study includes surveys, focus groups, and a case study. Results to date strongly suggest that, in spite of their importance to the welfare reform effort, the capacity of smaller nonprofits to adopt the business-oriented approach required to meet the expectations of government contracts …

The Great Lakes Environmental Finance Center conducted a technical assistance workshop for Gary, Indiana officials on June 29, 1999. This workshop represented an important step in the city’s efforts to address its brownfields cleanup and redevelopment needs. The city has begun its participation in a regionally-awarded brownfields pilot grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The workshop agenda focused discussion on overcoming the barriers to brownfields redevelopment and the financing basics of brownfields redevelopment. These topics were discussed in the context of the redevelopment of the Airport Development Zone and a major area of Gary’s waterfront.

In May 1999, the Great Lakes Environmental Finance Center (GLEFC) conducted a strategy-building workshop in Duluth, Minnesota. The purpose of the workshop was to assist the City of Duluth in its efforts to develop actions leading to the successful redevelopment of the USX/Cement Plant site. Particular emphasis was placed on financing strategies pertinent to properties with a history of environmental contamination, often characterized as brownfields. The Hollywood Group investigated the Hollywood District to access how well its built environment and neighborhood services meet the needs of its substantial elder population. A goal was to connect the concerns expressed by seniors and their hopes for the future of the area to other visions for Hollywood currently being developed.

The Aging in Hollywood Project provides a senior perspective on such issues as community design, transportation and access, neighborhood services, housing choices and community involvement. The Chinatown Senior Housing Committee, a group of concerned citizens and leaders, is exploring the possibility of building senior housing and a cultural community center in Chinatown. The project is intended to help revitalize Chinatown and provide needed services to Portland’s Asian community. To aid the Committee in achieving their goals, four Masters students in the Professional Planning Workshop at Portland State University completed a needs assessment of Chinese-American seniors in the Portland metropolitan area. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Planning Workshop Group.

In this paper, we explore the ways in which young people in a highly urbanised setting experience and develop constructions of nature. We do so by using Singapore as our case study, an Asian context in which urbanisation is total (Singapore's population is totally urbanised), Based on focus group discussions, we conclude that young Singaporeans have little interest in and affinity for nature. This stems from a few factors: growing up in a highly urban environment in which contact with nature is limited; over-protective parents of two-children families who worry about the 'dangers' their children are exposed to when playing …
