Responding To Foreclosures In Cuyahoga County: An Assessment Of Progress, Alan C. Weinstein, Kathryn W. Hexter, Molly Schnoke

In August 2006, Cleveland State University was asked to conduct an initial assessment of the Cuyahoga County Commissioners' Report and Recommendations on Foreclosure that would assist the county in planning for future phases of the project. This report presents the findings of this initial assessment of the first 18 months of the initiative. It documents the process undertaken by the county, assesses the progress made toward reaching goals, identifies successes and concerns, and offers some preliminary recommendations about program operations. It also offers suggestions for a more formal evaluation process going forward

This article considers the historical and spatial context for the emergence of youth crime and disorder prevention initiatives in Ireland. These initiatives have to be understood in the context of their relationship to the broader ‘urban question’ and in particular the relationship of the peripheral housing estate to the rest of society and the economic sphere. More recent changes in the nature of society and the emergence of a ‘liberal creed’ have resulted in greater use of surveillance technologies for offsetting the opportunities for crime to be committed. Regional Planning and Metropolitan Growth Management Research Projects

This is a working document and is the second report in this series. In section one the document begins by reviewing the origin and definition of "Cascadia" as a named place. Section two includes a description of the Cascadian landscape, and the issues and conditions in both its metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. Section three present four strategies for growing, stewarding, and sustaining Cascadia along "ecolopoli­tan" lines. The document concludes with the next steps for this project.

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on entrepreneurship as a principal source of economic growth. Many economic development practitioners and public policymakers are taking note of this, shifting attention and resources toward activities to support entrepreneurship. This reflects a broader shift toward strategies that spur growth from within (endogenous growth) rather than seeking economic gains from the outside (exogenous growth).

The objective of the entrepreneurship Confidence Survey is to assess the entrepreneurial climate and entrepreneurs’ confidence in their ability to start and sustain a business in Northeast Ohio. The intention is to repeat the survey annually for the next several years to identify trends that might emerge. The survey has been constructed to measure respondents’ perceptions regarding several issues, including access to capital, workforce supply, information provided by educational institutions and business support organizations, networking opportunities, government responsiveness, attitudes toward entrepreneurs, adequacy of infrastructure, quality of life, and confidence in the regional economy and the ability to start or sustain …

Recent dialogues in geography and the social sciences have reminded researchers of the extent to which academic and policy knowledges are socially and spatially embedded-that is, they circulate through formal and informal systems of publishing, exchange, commodification and cultural influence. Academic and policy knowledges are, in short, very much a part of the creative economy. In light of this, our paper surveys knowledges of the creative economy itself, as reflected in a geography of industry reports and government policy statements in selected Asian countries. Freedom Of The City: Canadian Cities And The Quest For Governmental Status, Ron Levi, Mariana Valverde

Until recently, Canadian cities were limited to the legal powers explicitly prescribed by provinces (the U.S.-based Dillon's Rule). Despite much talk about a "new deal for cities," recent changes to municipal legislation do little to empower municipalities to define and govern local problems, although courts appear somewhat willing to expand the scope of cities' authority. Through two case studies involving the City of Toronto, we demonstrate that even after the overhaul of provincial municipal acts, cities still lack the necessary legal tools and the legal flexibility to respond to pressing urban needs.

The Gateway Gardens Site Analysis takes a comprehensive look at a largely-vacant land area in Portland’s Gateway District. Currently owned by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), the 38-acre site currently serves as right-of-way for surrounding freeways, namely Interstates 84 and 205.

The project team developed a sequential process for completing this report. To gain an understanding of the project site, the initial step consisted of identifying key historical events and land uses that formed the site into what it is today. To address the negative environmental, political, and social consequences of the dominant, industrialized global food system, communities around the world have developed goals and values underlying a sustainable food system. Conceptualizing food production, distribution, and consumption as systems helps clarify the ways food affects social and natural environments, with the distribution element as the critical juncture where the product reaches the consumer. In this paper, I focus on one particular technological development that has come to influence religious practice in significant ways-religious broadcasting. Whereas computer-mediated communications now garner growing research attention, I have chosen to remember the influence of the older technology of broadcasting for its continued influence on myriad lives. In bringing this focus to bear on another major phenomenon, that of trans nationalism, I have come to understand how religious broadcasting does not contribute in a straightforward, linear fashion to perpetuating transnational identities and communities, but is instead implicated in the assertion of the national in the face of transnational …

This work is an update to the Regional Economic Indicators: Business and Innovation Climate report that was issued in August 2004. Although many of the same economic indicators are used in the analyses, there is a major difference between the two reports. The August 2004 release had a broad focus on the overall business climate in 36 comparable metro areas. The result was a single index—business and innovation climate. In this report, we focus almost exclusively on innovation and entrepreneurship, each with its own index.

The Ends And Means Of Public Art Making: A Case Study Of "Public Art" And "Art In Public" In The Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Region, Svetlana Gennadyevna Karasyova

The subject of public art has been prolifically but narrowly discussed in conjunction with controversies over particular public artworks. To investigate more broadly the complex aesthetic, institutional, social and political dimensions of public art, I examine a pluralistic landscape comprising nine arts organizations in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan region. A neo-Marxist framework defined by David Harvey organizes the case findings into four topics: material practices or public art outcomes; beliefs, values and desires; institutions and their rituals; and power and social relations.

The report is prepared by the Center for Economic Development at Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs as a part of the regional indicators project under the Presidential Initiative Program. The study examines human capital and labor force in 36 regions across the country: 32 metropolitan areas of comparable size to the Cleveland metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and three smaller MSAs in Northeast Ohio — Akron,1 Canton, and Youngstown.
