2021 was the year we got to grips with acknowledging that the COVID-19 pandemic was here for the long haul. While 2020 gave us the added impetus for pivoting to a digital first mode of operations, 2021 helped us strengthen our alignment to our strategic pillars of digital transformation, sustainable living, and growth in Asia. Continuing the tradition of students’ past, the results of the 2022 SMUSA survey reaffirmed that many of our students (82% of the respondents) agreed that the libraries helped them positively in their studies and 75% of the respondents agreed that the libraries is a place …

Development Of Institutional Repositories In Singapore, Pin Pin Yeo

The keynote presented the development of institutional repositories (IR) by universities in Singapore. The relevant policies on open access and research data were introduced. The importance of IR alignment with institutional goals was highlighted. Besides research publications, IRs could also host special collections of the institution or the community. The collaboration and sharing of best practices among Singapore academic libraries helped them to better support research at their institutions.

Arising from experiences during and post-COVID-19 circuit breaker and work-from-home arrangements, SMU Libraries developed a new library service to provide remote access to financial databases that are usually only accessible onsite. Financial databases such as Bloomberg and Eikon are accessed using a client-based software that is installed on a physical computer in the Investment Studio at Li Ka Shing Library. Using desktop virtualization technology, financial databases can be accessed remotely without the need of physical presence in the library, increasing availability and accessibility to the resources. This document is intended to assist catalogers in creating records for streaming media according to instructions within Resource Description and Access (RDA), the successor to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2). Like the original Best Practices for Cataloging Streaming Media, made available in 2008, it covers both streaming video and audio, including those that are born digital, as well as those that are created from an existing resource in another format, such as a video issued on DVD or videocassette. The unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has turned into a bloody war with no end in sight. Towns have been brought to ruins by heavy shelling that destroyed the infrastructure. The country’s cultural heritage, along with its own national identity, is under threat. Libraries, archives, museums, and monuments have become war casualties. This article examines the destruction of libraries during the first fifty days of conflict based on articles, press releases, and statements published in international media outlets and on librarians’ accounts posted on social media. This case study examines how the role of Student Success Librarian (SSL) at University of Dayton’s (UD) Roesch Library incorporates Catholic Social Teaching in order to achieve the mission of this faith-based institution. Students at UD are asked to sign a Commitment to Community, a list of pledges which share similar values to the themes of Catholic Social Teaching. By focusing on the intersection of the Commitment to Community, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I), and Catholic Social Teaching themes, the SSL at UD’s Roesch Library is able to incorporate Catholic Social Teaching in its programming, services, and partnerships.

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials that provide everyone with free permission to use. OER, which can include images, articles, videos and more, can lower barriers to accessing information. While OER is typically associated with academic libraries, there are many different kinds of openly licensed materials available, and many are applicable to other types of libraries. This session will cover what OER is, how OER can create a more inclusive and accessible environment, and ways OER might be used for programming and library needs.

Reference services form the core function of any type of library. Even when faced with shrinking budgets and staff sizes, library and archives workers continue to provide reference services to meet the demands of researchers. Yet a critical analysis of the internal systems used for archival and special collections reference work is lacking compared to the robust body of research about users of collection materials. This article presents findings from a national survey about reference staffing and scheduling models in archival and special collections repositories conducted immediately prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Use Of Information And Communication Technologies To Support Knowledge Sharing In Development Organisations, Peter Gatiti

This paper aims to identify knowledge sharing mediums used in development organisations and determine how different technologies support knowledge sharing. Results explore the strategies for using ICTs to extract, share, and disseminate knowledge. The qualitative data was gained from interviews with 11 knowledge management practitioners working in Kenya’s development organisations. All interview questions were open-ended and were consistent across the interview sessions. Qualitative data were analysed in themes using NVivo. Findings show that knowledge sharing in development organisations was supported by ICT-based tools, social media tools and collaborative tools. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, many academic libraries sought virtual instruction options, like the embedded librarian model, bringing renewed interest to the topic. Debates defining embedded librarianship are plentiful and varied, but a review of the professional literature reveals a commonly used metaphor comparing embedded librarians to embedded journalists. This paper analyses the prevalence of that metaphor in the professional discourse through the lens of cognitive metaphor theory (CMT) to reveal the semantic and pragmatic implications of its use. Quantitative literacy is an essential twenty-first century skill that universities are heavily invested in teaching to students. The social sciences play an important role in these efforts because they attract students who might otherwise avoid data and mathematically oriented courses and because they ground quantitative reasoning in political and social contexts that resonate with undergraduates. However, pedagogical best practices for social science instructors have been slow to emerge and the support needs of instructors and students remain difficult to discern. Like everything else, the reference desk and the way we provide service at it has changed. What hasn’t changed is the need for assistance with difficult information seeking tasks. Libraries receive fewer questions in the background information area (e.g. dates, places) these days but spend time on more complex research questions. DePauw Libraries seek to meet the needs of researchers by staffing the research desk with trained students and making librarians readily available for one-on-one collaboration.

Published in The Role of Citation in the Law: A Yale Law School Symposium, Michael Chiorazzi, ed.

This study examines the effects of the data source on citation metrics and faculty rankings by comparing three sources of legal scholarship citation data: Google Scholar, Westlaw, and HeinOnline. It compares six years of citations to works by all of the tenured and tenure-track members of the top twenty-eight faculties as determined by two recent legal citation studies. Rankings generated using the Leiter-Sisk method on the data from the three sources showed moderate to high correlation (0. 77 to 0. 96) to each …

The study was carried out to ascertain the significance of collection development policy in some public academic libraries in Ghana with Ghana Communication Technology University as the case study. The study adopted a case study design and used a qualitative method in its examinations. A self-designed interview schedule was used to solicit information from the staff library. The study participants included the head librarian, deputy librarian and four (4) assistant librarians.
