Not All Staying Is The Same: Unpacking Retention And Turnover In Academic Libraries, Samantha Guss, Jennifer Stout, Sojourna Cunningham

Although the academic libraries profession recognizes that retention is a complex and important issue, especially for advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and supporting BIPOC librarians, the library literature largely avoids defining or providing a measurement for retention at all. In this paper we propose an original nuanced definition of retention. We draw from existing research on workplace dynamics and library culture and our qualitative exploration of academic librarians who have left jobs before they intended. Our research investigated what it was like for them to stay at those jobs after they realized they didn’t want to stay long-term. …

To understand the research landscape of the GBA and assess its research strengths, this report, developed in partnership with the Chinese University of Hong Kong provides an overview of the research performance of the GBA and a highlight of the research development of Hong Kong based on analysis of research output data from 2018-2022.

How do you move forward to improve your teaching approaches and pedagogical decisions over time? Research has shown that reflective teaching provides instructors with opportunities to examine their classroom teaching, learning objects, and assessment. This reflection can inspire strategic new approaches, guide changes that improve student learning, and promote a holistic evaluation of instructional practice. Though the ACRL Framework holds metacognition as crucial to exercising information literacy, its emphasis was reduced from prominence in early drafts to a single mention in the final document. At the same time, few of the frequently-taught sets of source evaluation criteria include a step for self-awareness. This raises the question: do librarians explicitly teach metacognitive concepts when they teach source evaluation? Clemson University Libraries provides expert research services and has experienced a growing number of requests for guidance regarding evidence synthesis projects. In response, a team of three early-career science librarians sought to create a comprehensive online tutorial on the systematic review process. The tutorial outsources introductory education and features learning objects and assessments for each step. The tutorial streamlines consultations, freeing librarians to focus on project specifics. Accompanying participation guidelines clarify roles and responsibilities, timely completion of reviews, and authorship expectations. This asynchronous tutorial supports an equitable service model, benefiting researchers across all fields.

This demo proposal presents a case study that uses Gene Ontology (GO) and ML/AI algorithms to design and create KO-derived datasets for ML/AI applications. We discuss the characteristics and requirements of KO practices and products in implementing ML algorithms. The focus of this demo is on how knowledge organization systems can be utilized to derive datasets that can deliver quality and trustworthiness for achieving the precision, computing of semantic similarity, and interoperability in these algorithms.

In a previous study, the author argued that information literacy instruction which takes into account the contextual nature of research is more meaningful to students and has more potential for long term impact than instruction that focuses narrowly on academic research skills. As part of that argument, the author identified six types of research that represented the contextual nature of research—academic, creative, personal, professional, scholarly, and scientific. Liaison librarians depend on communication and cooperation to be successful, so professional publications about liaison librarianship regularly include discussions of relationship building methods. As a department of experienced liaison librarians, we identified the relationship-building ideas from previous publications that were proactive in nature and had worked for us. Even though the advice has been helpful, we faced challenges or heard about challenges from other librarians when we discussed implementing the ideas. The essay explores how the composition of the photo-architectural installation A Photogenetic Line (2019) by the Mumbai-based CAMP studio redounds in stretching Walter Benjamin’s multiform conceptual schema of the ‘dialectical image’ on two essential fronts: the flash-like nature of its appearance and its monadic configuration. Decoding this function proffered by the installation, in turn, reveals a revisionary historical materialist approach that rearticulates the question of violence in light of resurgent authoritarian populisms in South Asia.

This presentation examines the questions, “How do researchers find primary sources” and “How might libraries facilitate use of their archival materials?” Describing six opportunities or “points of entry” into the scholarly research workflow, the author synthesizes recent literature while presenting a strategic, collaborative approach for connecting scholars with archival collections through the coordination of collection visibility efforts, outreach, discoverability, consultations, research fellowships, and knowledge creation through joint archivist/researcher projects.
