The world has entered an era of retreating globalization, mounting geo-political tensions, rising protectionism, and increasing focus on the fragility of complex supply chains. The negative impacts of supply chain disruptions have been increasingly documented since the turn of the century. Given the global scale of recent disruptions, supply chain resiliency has become a national imperative. The Global Financial Crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, and other major disruptive events demonstrate the active role of government in mitigating damage, the enduring effects of regulation, and the resultant re-evaluation of supply chain strategies by the private and public sectors. Catholic Subject Headings, a list of subject headings focused on describing and representing Catholic belief, ritual, and culture, was first published in 1942 by the Catholic Library Association for use in Catholic libraries. The creation of a cataloging tool solely to represent and serve a distinct religious population allows for an imposition of religious worldview by those utilizing Catholic Subject Headings onto the materials they interacted with. The need for a specifically Catholic cataloging system is also revealing of the complex tensions between Catholics and Protestants and within the American Catholic community in 20^th century America.

“The Can You Hear Me Now? The Power of Sound in Library Instruction project was made possible by an award from the Northeast Florida Library Information Network. The poster features the award, the equipment purchased, and the three primary initiatives of the project. Voice amplifiers, lapel microphones, and Bluetooth headphones were purchased to support library tours, instruction, and engaging activities in the VLC/around the library. It also features an interactive augmented reality (AR) jazz experience. To engage in the experience, scan the QR code then point your device at the photos located along the bottom of the poster.”

Despite growing interest in applying human-centred design methods to create learning analytics (LA) systems, most efforts have concentrated on initial design phases, with limited exploration of how LA tools and practices can coevolve during the actual learning and teaching activities. This paper examines how a human-centred LA dashboard can be further refined and adapted by teachers while actively using it in a real-world scenario (i.e., design-in-use), beyond its intended design (i.e., design-for-use). We use instrumental genesis as a theoretical lens to analyze the temporary and permanent instrumentalization of design features and individual and collective instrumentation of the LA …

Bringing Servicewomen Into Focus: Exploring Methods For Indexing Second World War Archival Photographs At Library And Archives Canada, Rebecca Murray

Canadian Military History

The Second World War saw women officially serving in the Canadian military in capacities other than nursing, breaking into roles historically held by men. The service of over fifty thousand Canadian women is documented in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada; photographs that allow historians to widen the lens on the traditional narrative, but only if they can find them. This article presents two methods for indexing archival photographs and highlights the particular challenges of identifying servicewomen in the archival record and bringing our aunties and grandmas into focus.

Cultivating library collections includes not just thoughtful acquisition of materials, but also careful upkeep of physical materials and digital records. When the time has come to make space in the library, many different factors must be considered and dealt with to successfully complete a bound journal removal project. This study was carried out on influence of social media and information behaviour of postgraduate students in Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Three research questions and one (1) hypothesis guided the study. Descriptive research design was used, the population of the study consist of 462 postgraduate students of Federal University Lafia. Taro Yamane was used to determine the sample size of 214. The instrument used for data collection was a researcher designed questionnaire. Data generated from the research question was analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation while hypothesis was tested using Chi-square. The results …

Stock Verification is an essential part of library management that ascertains to check the library resources in the stock. It is an effective method to identify mistakes and prevent fraudulent procedures. The purpose of this article is to investigate the potential and intensive stock verification of more than 60000 documents from Mandya University Library. Study results reveal that 39127 library books are available in the powerhouse of the new library building constituent government college of Mandya University library and 23060 books are discarded as loss of books. Notable findings show that insufficient knowledge of cataloguing and classification rules has hampered …

In 2016, Absher and Cardenas-Dow wrote that for people of color, collaboration is often “a complex social and cultural negotiation” that acts as “a coping mechanism, a way to meet every day needs, the way we succeed and thrive in an environment that is not always accepting of our viewpoints[i].” Approaching collaboration as library faculty members with an understanding of its complex nature, the authors were delighted when the opportunity to collaborate arose. Organizational change is challenging. At the heart of this challenge is an attachment to the status quo. Both employees and managers tend to prefer the status quo because it is known and, unless shown otherwise, enables them to successfully accomplish their responsibilities. They often use tradition as a way to maintain the status quo. This case study provides an example of organizational change in the Brigham Young University (BYU) Library and discusses how tradition was used to both promote and resist change.

The Metadata Justice in Oklahoma Libraries & Archives Symposium is an event focused on improving metadata and description for historically overlooked communities in library and archival collections. This event is a result of collaboration between people working in libraries and archives in an environment that has traditionally kept library and archives work separate. Two members of the 2023 Planning Team discuss the symposium’s inception, event logistics, successes, opportunities for growth, and the impact that this symposium has on the Oklahoma library and archives community.

As has been discussed by many historians, the nineteen twenties were a complex period in Florida, marked by the promise of the great land boom and increased migration to the state, which was countered by the challenges of the land bust, two major hurricanes, and the subsequent depression. The career of Helen V. Stelle, who served as the director of the Tampa Public Library from 1917 to 1949 and helped to establish the Florida Library Association (FLA) in 1922, provides one example of how Florida libraries were affected by these …

When an instructor inquired about a print poster session in the library, I proposed a pilot e-poster session to save students time, money and make use of our new technology. This talk will cover the inspiration, logistics and outcome of an e-poster session for an Environmental Science class in the library.
